Apicture expresses an individual cormotation. Therefore, those shown in this book will always have meaning for youg yet some will have deeper significance than others . The expressions on the faces of your classmates and teachers were snapped by photographer Dresch with a second's click of his camerag ibut, through this book, they will be preserved for all time. These goals are reached in the following ways: writing by research papers, themes, essays, short stories, and various types of letters: speaking through courses on a three-level basis--compulsory in the sophomore level and elective in the junior and senior years: and reading through studies in classic and modern literature. Besides our native American English, the depart ment offers three foreign languages--Latin, whose vocabulary forms a large part of our scientific and legal words, and French and Spanish, which help in understanding other societies . The W N G grapplers ended with a '7-3 chart and a victory streak of six straight wins. With four seniors among the seven returning lettermen, Grove City had an experienced squad. This factor paid double dividends and accounted for much of the success during the season. The Eagles traveled to Commodore Perry for their first match, where they were overpowered 29-15. Three weeks lat- er, the Eagles had ironed out their weak spots to down the Knights of Franklin 22-16. Titusville and Greenville, the next Eagle opponents, again pointed out those weak points for 24-16 and 34-9 defeats respectively. Following the Greenville match, Forker's matmen compiled their successive wins by rolling over Franklin 40-9, out- wrestling New Castle 25-14, overpowering Oil City 28-12, edging out Jamestown 21-14, trouncing Hickory 49-0, and overcoming Kittanning 21-15. Assisting Coach Forker was Mr. Ben Adams, a graduate of Penn State. He also served as an assistant during the foot- ball season. This season was one of keen disappointments to the Eagle followers as much was expected from the team. Grove City was able to salvage only one of six league games, losing twice to Sharpsville and Greenville and with a 1-1 chart against Hickory. The Eagles never could seem to jell together and play the type of ball they were capable of playing. They would have one bad quarter which would put them out of the game. In many games, they would outplay the opponent for three quarters only to have that one disasterous quarter. The Eagles' big guns, Ron Worley and Jim Eak- er, combined to ripple the nets for 529 points. Wor- ley is only the third player in Eagle history to break 300, ranking with Jim Hensen, 320 and Jim Morrison, 303. Bruce Clark, Tom Adams, and Ron Leach will form the heart of next year's varsity. Going in for the graduating seniors will be Bucky Lyons, Dave Rec- tor, Dan Channadet, Ed Dunlap, Bemard Schaffer, Jim Bell, Dick Webster, Bob Bermette, and Keith Mc- Knight. These boys will endeavor to better the mark of this year's team and to perhaps bring a champion- ship once again to the Gold and White. I. V. Coach, Ken Westlake, Backfield Coach, Ben Adams: Head Coach, Dick Bestwick: Jr. Hi Coach, John Hummel The 1958 edition of the Grove City High School Eagles ended their sea son with the school's best record in seven years --seven wins and two losses. The Eagles overpowered their opposition in all of the nine games and, by scoring 254 points, reached the second high- est total in the school's history. They held their opponents to 44 points, outgained them by 2, 000 yards, racked up 112 first downs to the opposition's 60, gained 2, 339 yards rushing to the opponents' 642, and in all-around play displayed one of the best tea ms in Eagle history. Bestwick's '58 squad was a team of experience, weight, heart, and desire. Although they lost two games, fby nine pointsy the Eagles were rated one of the top teams in the district. The graduating members of this year's squad throw down the gauntlet to a 4-1 Junior Varsity and a 5-1 Junior High team. These boys are stepping into the shoes of a high spirited group: by maintaining this spirit the Eagles will soar again in future years . This year in retrospect was truly great with winning football, great fan support, and a wonderful job turned in by Coaches Bestwick, Westlake, Adams, and Hummel. This team will be replaced, but they never will be forgotten .... With 15 seniors and an experienced team, the Eagles were set for Beaver. Although the Eagles hit the Beaver 10 yard line four times, this proved the only game in which they failed to score. Bea- ver, on their only trip across the 50 yard stripe, hit payditt on a 16 yard pass and that was the game, 6-O. Outstanding play was turned in by McFadden and Eaker. McWilliams, Englehart, Armour, McFadden smash opposition Titusville proved to be a different story as the Eagle ma- chine started rolling and wasn't stopped until the score stood 37-13. lt was the first win for the locals as they completely Douglass recovers for Eagles The Eagles successfully opened the '58 campaign at home with a 38-0 trampling of Oil City. Scoring the first time they had their hands on the ball, G. C. racked up their second straight win and their first whitewash of the season. The game could be summed up in one phrase--a stunning offense combined with an immovable defense. Outstand- ing for the Eagles were Worley and Milner. dominated the play. The big gun for the Eagles was Bob Braine as he rambled for three T. D.'s and a total of 19 points. The defensive line was again excellent, with Douglass, Armour, and Buckley leading the charge. A I , ' I ' .h Line paves way for Braine's score Neshannock's first varsity football team played host for the opening game of a new series with the Eagles. The Eagles flew high, and downed the Lancers 41-0. The entire Eagle squad gave a good account of them- selves with Douglass, McWilliams, D.Braine, and Winger all outstanding. This game saw the Eagles face one of the top-ranked teams in the district, the Franklin Knights. Although the Knights proved to be a tough eleven, the high-flying Eagles soared on to a 20-7 victory. The Eagles made their first swoop when Braine swiftly flew through Franklin's defense alignment. From there on, it was a battle of stiff defenses. This proved to be the first ame in which Franklin failed to score more than two touch- S downs, and it was fatal for the Knights. Outstanding for the Eagles were Adams and McWilliams. 120 Braine up and away lt was HOMECOMlNG at Grove City and, before it was over, the unbeaten Mustangs had crumbled with a 34-6 defeat. Before a capacity crowd of 4500 fans, the Eagles ran roughshod over Mercer for their third straight win. For the Eagles, it was Braine and Forsythe in the backfield, with Englehart and Welker in the line supply- ing that extra needed kick. for pigskin Adams grasps The Eagles opened their drive for the Mercer County Class A crown by ripping the Greenville Trojans, 21-0. It was their sixth strai ht win and their first in 8 league competition. For Grove City it was a stout defense that limited the Trojans to 3 first downs and 86 yards rushing. The G. C. machine rolled up 9 first downs and 249 yards for 21 points and the victory. Bob Braine again scored two T. D. 's with the superb blocking of Dittrich, McFadden, Englehart and Welker. Dittrich, Welker, and Milner open hole in left side of line Forsythe earthbound In the last 29 seconds, the Sharpsville Blue Devils snatched a 9-6 victory away from the Eagles and with it the Mercer County Crown. With only sec- onds remaining and three points behind, quarter- back Nelson ran a sneak six inches over the goal line that crushed the Eagles drive for the champion- ship, 12-9. It was a tremendously hard fought ball game: but, when it was all over, Sharpsville had broken an Eagle six game winning streak and squeaked off with the championship. Outstanding for G. C. were McFadden and Worley. ln the final game of their high school career for fifteen seniors, Grove City High School literally ran at will over an outclassed Hickory squad, 54-0. It was the highest single game point total since 1941. Scoring in every quarter and playing almost the en- tire game in Hickory land, the Eagles were a sharp, aggressive, and roaring animal as they ended their season with seven wins and two losses. As one Senior put it, It was the toughest thing of m career to take off my equipment after this game. Eagles display power play To show appreciation for the parents who undergo varied inconveniences so that their boys may play football the Sharpsville game was designated as Parents Night. The picture at the left shows our parents as they watched with mixed emotions their boys in action against the Blue Devils. In the background the Eagles' cheering section can be seen filled to capacity which was indicative of the school spirit which filled the air surrounding our football stadium. He has always given freely of his artistic talents. N0 one person worked more unself- ishly toward making our prom a success. Few realize the hours spent directing settings for class plays and musical concerts. For our class alone, he has designed the sets of Show Business, Onions in the Stew, The Old Lady Her Metals, and the entire settings for the 1958 Prom-- Night Clubbing. This page has given our class the opportu- nity to say thank you. Nial McCamey--teacher, publication ad- visor and contributor to activities--has given generously of his time and talents in service to our class. Since becoming GROVER STAR and PINE KNOT advisor in 1956, he has raised the standards of both publications to one of national recognition. To work with Mr. Mc- Camey is to gain admiration for him, and to repay him would indeed be an impossible task. Thus, 'it is with sincere appreciation for his untiring efforts that we, the senior class, devote a portion of this book to a most de- serving man.
