This, a pivotal year in a time of crisis, Ends another class leaving the safe and happy confines of Grove City High Schools and entering a troubled and uncertain world. This book, our Pine Knot, must then be our last glimpse into the carefree days of our youth. It is a svmbol of accomplishments and regrets, it is a symbol of laughter and tears, and it is a symbol of the hopes and dreams of our teens. Therefore, this book has been aimed at you and your interests. The theme is YOU. In the background you will notice the traditional pine wood, long rep- resentative of the title of Grove City High School yearbooks. We, the Pine Knot Staff of 1951, hope our year-long effort meets your ap- proval. We hope that it will long remain an irreplaceable memento that will light up the cheerful halls of your treasured memories in what We hope will be a happy and successful future. 4 0 . This book is for Miss Martha ,N Hosack, a teacher and a friend if of youth. Miss Martha Hosack has long been a familiar figure in the halls of Grove City High School. We, the class of 1951, had to give no second thought in our choice for the Dedication section of this yearbook. We shall always remember Miss Hosack. We shall remember her as a teacher, as an advisor, as a counselor, and as a friend. We shall always envy this fine teacher, for we know that as long as there are students in her classes, she will remain vitally young and forward looking. We envy her life and her achievement. We, therefore, take great pride in dedicating this book to Miss Martha Hosack, a teacher and a friend of youth. 5 fn Administration ,.,,.,.. ..A,.. 7 -14 Classes ,. , ,. Seniors .,..,. . Pictured above are the members of thc joint School Board for Grove City joint Consolidated Schools. Their monthly meetings decide many ot the problems met in administering a large school svstem such as ours. Uwe Umm 'Coing to the ofiicev has many unhappy connotations, but MRS. BETTY IIUMMEL this isnit always true. We have two pleasant personalities, in Mrs. Swrilgzfylffiflwl,?l1fisK:if:iil'l t Caldwell and Mrs. Wellington, to greet us as we enter. In the MRS. RUTH YVELLINCTON Superintendent,s otlice, Mrs. Wellington has ably replaced Mrs. l,r6Wlt Svcrcturv Hummel, who has obtained a leave of absence so that she may be to the 5111PCfiHU'11df'I1t with her husband at Camp Atterbury. Meanwhile Mrs. Caldwell mm Picfufedl holds forth in Mr. Surrena,s office. f Without these people our school would not have the vast supply of records that help us after graduation. Their work, too, aids in the eflicient operation of our school. 8 MRS. MABEL CALDNVELL Secretary to the Principal Our cheerful superintendent, Dr. Nelson Mowls, is a very busy man whom We have all found to be willing to help in any wav that he can. His guid- ance will long be remembered by all those who have attended our high school. Our superintendent, also ath- letically and sociallv-minded. tries to attend all the functions of the school in spite of his busy schedule. Dr. Mowls is inter- ested in the betterment of our school as well as the advance- ment of the individual student. Ilis tireless energy and encour- agement to the student body are deeplv appreciated. ..! Une of the busiest men in our school is our principal, Mr. H. J. Surrena. Striving through the many hours in the day and even starting before school begins in the fall, Mr. Surrena industrious- ly guides and directs the func- tions of our school. He is very much interested in the athletic program of our school. He is an eager sponsor of our social functions. Mr. Surrena's inter- est, helpfulness, and his unceas- ing aid in our progress is deeply appreciated by all the students of Grove City High School. DR. I. NELSON MOWLS u. XVe, the seniors, looking back, remember four years of hard studying, classes. clubs, fun, friendships, and most of all, school spirit. Our minds conjure again the exciting times we had at the carnivals. dances, basketball and football games, and the Wrestling matches. Many of us also remember the days we loafed in classes or study halls, carried on in classes, or even skipped our hardest class, that We later realized We needed most. But We also have tried to contribute our efforts in making our school a better one. Now our thoughts are toward our future lives. Through- out our future. We will remember most those four years in Grove City High School that gave us the most wonderful and happy days of our lives, To the freshmen, sophomores, and juniors we now leave the precious responsibility of carrying on the high standards of our school. They have already shown school spirit, enthusiasm, and industry which are vitally important in making our school one filled with friendship and unity. 16 Standing-Richard Sop- Seated-Olga Pagni, Sec- retary, Ruth Benshoff, ,SuubM,... Along with several assembly appearances, the band had an inter- esting and eventful season. Under the direction of Mr. Ben Marshall, this outstanding musical organi- zation also supplied players for the two pep bands that appeared at pep rallies and winter indoor sports events. Besides their morale boosting and stirring music, the band deserves a pat on the back for the many hours it spent drilling and practicing. Our high School orchestra THE GROVE CITY HIGH SCHOOL ORCHESTRA provided a small symphonic organization for several oc- men casions demanding g O O d music, the most noteworthy being the two class plays. Miss Burgess, a fine person and the dean of Grove City music, directed this Outstand- ing ensemble. The result was music that soothed and enter- tained. 54 gm' fhmxm. The Athletic Council, made up of approximately forty sports-minded girls, pro- vides an active school year for its members as they gaily hreeze through their round of games, tournaments, initiations, parties, and dances. The two higgest pro- jects of A.C., as it is fondly called, are the sponsoring of the llome- coming Dance and cele- hration, and the ordering of special jackets for its memhers. The spirit of this cluh and the way the girls work together help to make it one of the most energetic and successful clnhs in the school. Facing a stiff nine game schedule, the Eagles came out on top four times. Included in these Wins were Oil City, Mercer, Franklin, and Green- ville. Two losses were received at the hands of Beaver Falls and Butler. Three ties Were played with Brookfield, Sharpsville, and Hickory. Altogether, the Eagles scored 94 points against their opponents 87. Probably most out- standing Was the Groveris defense. The seven class A Schools which the Grovers played were able to score only 20 points. This is an average of about three a game. Leading the scoring par- ade for the Grovers was end Don McCoy, who had 24 points. Other scorers were Bill Thorne, 19, Dick Fehrs, 12, Red Hoffman, 12, Dick Sop- her, 12, Ralph Rice, 6, Ken Dunn, 6, Dale Shes- man, 2, Pete Koenig, 1. Much of the success of this team must be given to Head Coach Eugene Forker, and his assistants, Kenneth VVestlake, Wade Skelton, and Richard Hummel. A victory banquet for the football team was also held. The mothers of the players gave this successful supper. On December 6, Co-captains Ted Elder and Dick Fehrs accepted the Championship Trophy from Coach Forker in a student assembly. Eight of this yearis regulars will graduate in June. While space is limited, we hope you will look at these names as carefully as you would at a more spectacular full page advertisement, for without these contributions, our Pine Knot would soon have to discontinue publication.
