1 Practicing strenuously, sweating out the big matches, and spending valuable time. These are the elements that go into Gross- mont's wrestling team. The team was led on to victories by five returning lettermen Dave Zietlow, 98 lbs., Bill Echols, 115 lbs., Allan Schlagel,123Ibs.5 Tom Julian, 154 lbs., and Tom Wenbourne, 168 lbs. Heading the list of grapplers, filling in the blanks left by last year's seniors are top wres- tlers Chris Linda, Don Duarte, Ross Merrill, Norm Bell, and Bill Funke. They were head- ed by co-captains Allan Schlagel and Bill Echols. The team fared well in the Chula Vista Bill Funke works an Santana opponent. Kiwanis Tournament, coming in second. As the season progressed, bad breaks and injuries hurt the team and the season ended with a 4-3 league record. ln league finals John New- brough, Bill Echols, Tom Julian, and Ross Merrill proved their worth while placing high in the standings. The top finale in league finals was Tom Wenbourne placing first in the 145 lbs. division. Top finishers in C.l.F. finals were Bill Echols placing third and Tom Wenbourne placing fourth. ln the Grossmont College Wrestling Tournament Allan Schlagel finished first in the 125 lbs. class and was awarded the meets Outstanding Wrestler.
