MIDDLE-- Sunquist, Day, Fleming, Craven, Thomas, Grorivold, Russo, Bowker, Turrrey BACK ROW--Brockett, Bergman, Ferguson, Myers, Boniface, Sweetwooi Beck. The 1967 Foothillers are champions. Twenty years is a long time to wait, but the wait is finally over, as the Foothillers brought to Grossmont High the first League Championship since 1947. This was Gross- mont's first championship since the League's inception in 1963. The Big Win was undoubtedly the 13-6 victory over arch-rival Helix, while the Big Disap- pointment would be the loss to St. Augustine, 33-13, in the final round of the CIF play-offs. The year began with a victory over Crawford, featuring the long-bomb from Russ Proctor to Paul Neumann. Our first league win was over El Cajon. Dennis Sutton began his rise as one of Grossmont's brightest stars. The next step on the ladder was the destruction of Santana by a strong Hiller defense, led by Tom Julian and backed up by Dave Mattson and Dan Sampson. The undefeated Foothillers then put down a determined challenge by Granite Hills 35-19. This set the stage for the titanic battle with El Capitan. A rugged defense led by Tom Wenbourne and Bruce Thomas, coupled with an offensive burst by Dennis Sutton eliminated El Cap 27-13. Then came the show- down with the Green Machine from Helix. Gross- mont disassembled the machine to the tune of 13-6. Great offensive blocking by Mike Cummings and Terry Fleming paved the way as the Hiller defense again proved itself the best in Southern California by battling the Highlanders' offensive thrusts. The bubble burst the following week as Grossmont dropped a 6-2 decision to the Matadors of Mt. Miguel. The league clincher came at the expense of Monte Viste 35-7. Harry Tong had a great offensive night, and Doug East had his usual fine night on defense. The Mighty Foothillers succumbed to the St. Augustine Saints 33-13 in a torrential downpour in the first round of the CIF play-offs. The cover closed on Grossmont's greatest year on the gridiron. There is always that note of thanks to a great coaching staff, Head Coach Pat Carroll, De- fensive Coach Pat Roberts, Offensive Coach Don Goodpasture and Line Coach John Godden. These men gave of themselves unselfishly so that our ath- letes might excell. For them there will always be a special place in the annals of Grossmont High School. Thus, the football season fades, but 1967 will al- ways be remembered as a team year, when every ath- lete gave everything all the time as the Foothillers gained their first title since 1947.
