JOHN CORNELIUS Senior Counselor The seniors owe a large vote of thanlcs to their helpful counselor Mr. Cornelius in making their last year at dear G.U.H.S. an enjoyable and profitable one I MR. HART Mr. Hart has to be a perfect cross between a cave-man and a bobby-soxer this year, as all the jobs seem to fall on him. He is not only the sophomore counselor but also the Director of all the counseling, in charge of the veterans program, the vocational career conference, and MISS ELIZABETH PETERS Freshmen Counselor The frosh got off to a good beginning this year with the guidance of their very capable counselor, Miss Peters. If you do you can always find relief from your ailments in the quiet and efficiently run nurse's ofice. Mrs. Eddie S. Parvin is the Senior nurse in charge and Mrs. Sylvia Anne Chambers is her helper. MRS. NEWELL Bobby-soxers or stone-agers, girls are always losing things. In the girl's PE. department the reliable Mrs. Newell is the person that keeps track of the girl's belongings and finds their lost articles. OFFICE STAFF The office staff is an efficient unit of hard working secretaries, receptionist, bookkeepers, and question answerers. They keep bulle- tins out, grades recorded, telephones answered, money straight, attendance records, and millions of other jo-bs that keep our school running with the wheels of progress. i '41 J A A BUS DRIVERS Ridin g dinosaurs to school has become old tashioned even with us so we had to turn to the more modern method ot transportation . . . buses! The buses are driven by the ex-dinosaur jociceys so we always get to school on time! CUSTODIANS Custodians have a iarge job keeping the grounds ot Grosmont clear of dinosaur bones and other tossils. Their work never ends and you'll never see any ot these men loating. BILL CLARK Successtul leadership ot all A.S.B. activi- ties is the responsibility ot our congenial Student Body President, Bill Clarlc. l-le very ably administers on all problems arising be- fore the Commission. ANNE GEIBERGER The ottice ot Commissioner ot Finance involves much work and responsibility. ln supervising all A.S.B. expenses, including those ot clubs, and lceeping accurate records ot these, Anne Geiberger has proved her- selt an indespensible member ot the Com- mission. DONALD NYRE As Commissioner ot Cultural Attairs, Don took upon his shoulders perhaps one ot the most ditticult positions on the commission, that ot planning as- semblies. Ample proot ot his etticiency were the many tine assemblies which the student body witnessed throughout the year. Other duties also in- cluded drawing up the calendar ot events tor the school year and aiding with Alumni Day. LOUIE LlCl-ITY ln charge ot all A.S.B. dances and elections and superviser ot the G.S.C. is Louie Lichty, our very etticient Commissioner ot Weltare. The successtul administration ot these and many other school activities are due to Louie's caretul planning. MARY ANN HARTMAN As Commissioner of Publici- ty, Mary Ann had to discharge many varied duties. l-ler main line of worlc was to publicize all activities sponsored by the A.S.B. She gave help-worthy advice to any club wishing to publicize any activity. l-ler job also required of her that she tabulate the Circle G points. JIM l-lASLAM The supervision of athletic events and the ordering of letters and awards made up but a few of the taslcs of the commissioner of Ath- letics. One of his biggest problems was to ar- range seating capacity for the enormous crowds which attended all the athletic events. l.um's unperturbed and speedy manner of handling difficult situations commanded respect from everyone who worlced with him. V24 13 5 :WY-qs 1 RAY GASTIL Ray is largely responsible for the democratic and smooth-running mechanism which makes up our Student Council. As commissioner of Co- ordinated Activities, he has handled the many drives, which included the Red Cross, March of Dimes, Millc Fund, Clothes for Europe, the Nava- hoes. and the Blind, with the utmost competence and efficiency which has produced excellent results. BASEBALL The Foothillers boast a strong pitching statt with Art Preston, Pied Wienbrandt, and Diclc Thompson doing most ot the hurling. The Foothillers also have a strong batting punch spearheaded by Dick Rand, Halbert Red Crow, Jack Graham, and Art Preston, Diclc Rand and l'lalbert Crow were named on the All Metro team last year, while Art Preston was named on the second string. All three should be repeaters on this year's squad. This season's team compiled a highly enviable record in view ot their many time howin s this season Among the more prominent ot the events were the Long Beach s g . relays and the Huntington Beach relays in which we placed third, and the Fallbrook relays in which Grossmont's relay team placed tirst inthe large schools division. Although the B's were upset by a strong La Jolla B team and will place second in league competition they have been no less superlative than the cham- pionship C's. Among the outstanding marlcs set in the class B were Martin Donahue's 3:24 in the l32-, Walter Smith's broadiumping ot 20 feet, Dave Smith's out- standing pole vault and Bob Rogers' l:3O in the 660. C TRACK Though Grossmonts class C team is loaded with talent and depth it would not be right not to mention Stabb's fine sprinting in the l8O yard dash and Jaclc Eaton's ll toot 3'f2 inch pole vault. The Girls' Athletic Association ot Grossmont began its very active season with volleyball, sponsoring a Play Day to which they invited many ot the city and county schools. FOO-Tl-IILLER I-ll-Y The Poothiller l-li-Y Club, in less than a year and a halt, has become one ot the most active I-Ii-Y clubs in San Diego Coun- ty. BLUE AND COLD HI-Y The Blue and Gold I-li-Y is a newly organized club. They have had an ac- tive and interesting year. The club is fortunate to have Jerry Basset and Mr. Warburton leading them as their Presi- dent and club sponsor. LA MESA l-II-Y The La Mesa l-li-Y is one ot the oldest and most active service clubs at Grossmont. Some ot the projects this year include taking care ot the en- rollment ot new students, polishing the trophies, ushering at P.T.A. night, Christmas Pageant, and a project to get intormation about Grossmont's veterans. The club has par- ticipated in many activities this year, Among them the Pigskin Prance, popular dance held during the football season. The organi- zation also helped to decorate 'tor the Christmas Pageant, inducted members ot many Y clubs in the county, re- modeled the track record board, and participated in Y- Day in l-lollywood. SCHUBERT CLUB The Schubert Club is Grossmont's hon- orary music group. lts aim is to give its members a chance to perform before an audience. Each year it sponsors a spring recital presenting all its members and provides talent tor many local programs. lts officers are: B. Beagle, President: L. Burnett, Vice-President: M. McCurdy, Vice-President: L. Burnett. Secretaryg B. Jones, Treasurer. The sponsors are Mrs. Donohue and Mr. Lutz. JUNIOR RED CROSS This year the Red Cross drives were handled on a representative basis by the student council. The membership drive, Christmas boxes, and National Children's Fund were among the services rendered by the group. ELJTURE EARMERS QE AMERICA The EEA. is one ot Grossmont's larg- est organizations. It is responsible tor one ot the most outstanding dances ot the year, the l-larvest Ball. Retresh- ments are turnished by the E.E.A. in toot- ball and baslcetball season. The E.E.A. members compete in many contests dur- ing the year. This year the club is headed by Duane Rinner as Presidet, Lee l-lill, Vice-Presi- dent, Jim Baehman as Secretary, Bob Minnis, Treasurer: Alvin Warner, Re- porter, and Bill Bucltel as Sentinel. X Putuiais TEACHERS GE Afviiskicfx - The E.T.A.'s president, Miclcey Cheney, Vice-President Betty Aspe, Secretary Nancy Myers, Treasurer Diclc Dunlop and Librarian Nina Rogers lecl the Grossmont chapter through an interesting year's ac- tivities. Among these was the sending ot relief boxes to Europe. Mr. Cyrus Keller and Miss Elizabeth Peters acted as the club's advisers. PAN AMERICAN CLUB The Pan American club helps to pro- mote Triendship and good will to Spanish countries. Many events are held, among which the Pan Am Ball is the most impor- tant. A Pan Am Queen is crowned each year at this dance and the proceeds go to the cancer tund. There are eighty members in the club this year. LATIN CLUB The 'Polliclcin' Romans started out this year by electing Kathrine Mason as President and Margaret Irey, Treasurer. The purpose ot the club has been to support an Italian war orphan through the Poster Parents Plan. Not only has it accomplished this, but its activities in- cluded a Zoo picnic, Patio Party, Movies, Christmas Party, Roman Banquet, Penny an Inch Dance and a Slcating Party. APT CLUB This year the Art Club has been a real community service group. Qver tive hundred Christmas cards, tavors and tree decorations were made tor the Naval I-lospital. Money tor the Art Scholarship was earned by helping to malce the La Mesa Christmas street decorations. Monthly evening meetings were held at which some prominent local artist spolce to the group. HQRIZON CLUB The l-lorizon Club-the upper division ot the Camp Fire Girls. They hold weelcly meetings at noon and are an ever growing organization. The club calendar has really been tull and there have been many op- portunities to-r every member to partici- pate in all activities. BIQLQCY CLUB The '47-'48 Biology Club has had an active year with an initiation, tield trips and special spealsers under the sponsor- ship ot Miss King and Mrs. Schmidt. The purpose ot this club is to gain a greater knowledge in tield ot Chemistry. LETTERMEWS The Lettermen's Club was reorganized again this year to bring more prestige to Grossmont's lettermen and to do many usetul projects tor the benetit ot the whole school. Carla Lee Conti led the newly tormed club the tirst semester and Raymond MacMullin was responsible tor the success ot the club the second semester. i BOWLING This year the boys' and girls' bowling clubs are combined and are meeting at the new Comanche Bowl. They hope to be bowling in Metropolitan League Com- petition. The otticers are: President, Thelma Purdy, Vice-President: Tom Musil, Secre- tary, and Treasurer, Bruce Nicholson. MATH One ot the more brainy clubs at G.U.l-LS. is the Math Club. They held weekly meetings during the year at which l-lerb Wiggans presided as President, Dorothy Broolis, Secretary, and Roy Lee Master, Treasurer.
