To put all the qualities of Grossmont ' s big chief into one short paragraph is like tr)ing to crowd all the jo)s and memories of high school days into one annual. While we can mention his efficienc}-, understanding, and friend- liness, we cannot mention his thousand and one little thoughts and deeds that have made Mr. Smith stand out in our memory as a fine leader and friend. In order to more full) represent the student body, a student council was added, that consisted of representatives from home room classes. The Board con- sists of nine members each term. They pass judgment on students found guilty of littering the grounds or defacing school prop- erty. G.G.G. means Groom Grossmont Grounds. Plans were made for a more effective Big Sister program for freshmen girls and to raise funds for the scholarship given jointly by the Girls ' League and Boys ' ederation. The cast and Eleanor Foley should receive laurels for staging such a successful performance, in spite of war conditions. They took part in the pageant, presented radio programs, the Taster candlelight services at the Army- Navy Y.M.C.A. and in various club programs, and assemblies. Almost as well known are the Girls ' Ensemble, Girls ' Glee Club, Celestial Choir and Girls ' Trio, all under the direction of Merle Donahue. The Red Robed Choir sponsored the very successful dance, Red Robe Romp for the purpose of securing new robes. MHf and uaii . Among the big events of the year for students of the instrumental department were the Christ- mas Pageant, football games, assemblies, the Spring Concert, Senior Play, and Baccalaureate and Commencement Exercises. In addition to participating in the Band and Orchestra, several have taken part in a Dance Band which played for many scl ool dances. They took part in contests sponsored by the Lions Club and the American Legion. Of the 17 Grossmont entries in the contest at State College, 11 placed in the finals. This organization was also outstanding throughout the county for its judging, having won nine out of a possible ten trophies in this field. Grossmont ' s 1944 Varsity Football Team finished last in the Victory League. This year ' s eleven was greatl) ' hampered by calls to service and injuries that plagued them all season. The highlights of the season were the scoreless deadlock with the highly touted Coronado aggregation; and the near upset of La Jolla ' s Vikings 31 to 20. Mention should be made of two Foothiller players. Roger Huckaby was placed on the All-Victory League first team at an end position. Bud Lauters, hard charging fullback, was placed on the second All-Victory League team. The 1944- ' 45 varsity cage squad at Grossmont finished an eight game schedule, with three wins and five losses. After winning three straight they were upset, and proceeded to lose the remaining five games. The Foothiller B Quintet finished the season, a game ahead of the A ' s, in fourth place. The B ' s won four straight games until the Hoover debacle. After this game they lost three more to end up with .500 per cent. e n ' r . . . That CcuhU The 1944- ' 45 edition of the C and D teams at Grossmont met with great success at the Coronado Invitational Tourna- ment. The C five was eliminated in the first round, but came back to win the consolation cup. The Grossmont track team lived up to its fine reputation, by taking the honors in the Hoover relays and the Victory League meet. The A team came through the season in the second place, and the B ' s and C ' s tied for second place with San Diego. iw M}sd . . . Oh theit ' Jeet Records that were broken at the Hoover Relays by Gross- mont participants were the Varsity Distance Medley Relay, lowering the old time to 11:34.3; and the Varsity 440-yard Relay, the time for this event was 45 seconds flat. 4 ' u ■■r M . hut a yell? C ' mon, kids! Boomskiwowo! Let ' s go! And those five peppy cheer leaders are off, leading the yells for dear old Grossmont. And comes the familiar drum instruction, the famous pom pon girls go through their inspirational rou- tines. The female version of the Letterman ' s Club is the Girls ' Ath- letic Association, led by Catherine Martini.
