THE MILIISSIIC DEPARTMENT Music in Grossmont, this ear, as alwa s, has la ed an im ortant and Y Y P Y P en'o able art in school life. The Music De artment, under the com etent 1 Y P P P leaderslii of Mrs. Merle Donohue and Mr. Edwart Ortiz, has roved out- P P standin Y, both vocall and instrumentall , in its active work on man ro- 2-, Y Y Y P grams throughout the year. Besides the regular organizations, and addi- tional frou , the Mixed Double uaftets, have re resented the de artment in P P P on many occasions. The principal effort this year of all organizations was concentrated on the fourth Annual Spring Concert, presented on May 10th. In this concert, Alfred Noyes, famous ballad, The Highwaymanf, in cantata form, with music by Mark Andrews, was given an excellent high school premiere, having heretofore been college work. Also, in the Annual Christmas Pageant, the Glee Clubs, Choruses, and the Orchestra combined with other departments to present Grossmont's traditional Yuletide gift to the community. THE GIRLS' GLEE CLUB made many appearances this year, entertaining local clubs, and singing for various school programs, including the Annual Spring Concert. An outstanding feature was the participation of ten members of the club in a program with Charles Wakefield Cad- man at the San Diego Rotary Club. The ten chosen girls were: Patty Foster, Myrtle Shallock, Mary Iones, Doris Kichline, Zola Swoboda, Carrie Church, Fern Wheeler, Violet Abbott, Melanie Gardner, Alice Lamp, and their accompanist, Marjorie Swoboda. Officers are: Mar- jorie Swoboda, President, and Patty Foster, Secretary-Treasurer. THE BAND, directed by Mr. Ortiz, has achieved the reputation of being one of the best high school bands in Southern California. It has played at athletic events, in a concert each semester, and in the Annual Spring Concert. Edward Ortiz, Ir., is Concertmaster. THE ORCHESTRA, conducted by Mrs. Donohue, combines junior and senior divisions. It has appeared at plays, assemblies and programs throughout the year. Exceptional work was done in the Spring Concert and in the Christmas Pageant. OFHcers are: Betty Anne Iackson, President, and Orland Huffman, Treasurer. THE MIXED DOUBLE QUARTETS, directed by Mrs. Donohue, were organized this year. Despite their short existence, the group is popular and much in demand for community as well as school programs. Out- standing features in their career have been a radio broadcast over KFSD on a P.-T. A. program, and starring parts in the Christmas Pageant and the Highwayman.' Ralph Golden is their leading officer.

Membership is gained only with recommending grades in public speaking. Officers are Beltran Hubbard, president, Raynold Hawley, vice-president, Marjorie Swoboda, secretary, and Don Floto, treasurer. Events sponsored have been a Story Telling Contest, won by Paul Gaston, and various preliminaries to select representatives in inter-scholastic competition. The local chapter, National Forensic League, in its fourth year, is ora- cered by Mary Beck, president, and Marjorie Swoboda, secretary. Linden Martin, Beltran Hubbard, lean Brady, Raynold Hawley, Carlyle Steves, Barbara Andrews and Iohn Crippen, and speech coaches, Miss Edith Grass- mueck and Mr. LaZelle Smith, are also members. Membership is by points secured in inter-scholastic competition. This year, the Forensic League spon- sored entrance in the Redlands State Contest, April 20-21, including original oratory and extempore speaking as well as the declamation and debate of past years. Marjorie Swoboda and Mary Beck entered the oratory. Mary also entered the extempore, where she won third place. In DECLAMATION, the annual local contest in April was won by Carlyle Steves, who also won at Redlands, thereby becoming eligible for the national contest at Topeka, Kansas. Second and third places locally were won by Raynold Hawley and Linden Martin. In DEBATE, Grossmont met Army and Navy Academy and San Diego High School, defeating the latter and losing to the former. Beltran Hub- bard, Raynold Hawley, Mary Beck, Barbara Andrews and Iohn Crippen composed the teams. At Redlands Hubbard and Hawley reached the fifth round before being eliminated. In the annual TOASTMASTERS, CONTEST, Mary Beck and lean Brady Won first and second at Coronado. Mary won second at both San Diego and Los Angeles, becoming eligible for the national contest.
