Adviser The zealous and enthusiastic efforts of this year's commissioners has made of the school year 1933-34 one of genuine achievement if measured solely in terms of the sustained percentage of membership in the organiza- tion despite depression. Of the 626 pupils enrolled in Grossmont Union High School, about sixty-two percent are members of the Associated Student Body. The administration of the body has be:n smooth and conscientiously carried out by the students in charge. The outstanding milestone achieved by this year's commission is the securing of a chapter of the California Scholarship Federation, charter for which was secured during the spring semester and public installation held just before the close of school. The yell leaders-Ella DeFalco, Betty Turner and Fern Wheeler- chosen by the student body officers, performed consistently in leading student enthusiasm at games throughout the year. Iohn Crippen Barbara Andrews Mary Beck Raynold Hawley Linden Martin lean Brady Iilla De Falco Beltran Hubbard SPEECH Prominent among school organizations is the Grossmont Speech Club, organized this year with approximately twenty-five members. Membership is gained only with recommending grades in public speaking. Officers are Beltran Hubbard, president, Raynold Hawley, vice-president, Marjorie Swoboda, secretary, and Don Floto, treasurer. Events sponsored have been a Story Telling Contest, won by Paul Gaston, and various preliminaries to select representatives in inter-scholastic competition. The local chapter, National Forensic League, in its fourth year, is ora- cered by Mary Beck, president, and Marjorie Swoboda, secretary. Linden Martin, Beltran Hubbard, lean Brady, Raynold Hawley, Carlyle Steves, Barbara Andrews and Iohn Crippen, and speech coaches, Miss Edith Grass- mueck and Mr. LaZelle Smith, are also members. Membership is by points secured in inter-scholastic competition. This year, the Forensic League spon- sored entrance in the Redlands State Contest, April 20-21, including original oratory and extempore speaking as well as the declamation and debate of past years. Marjorie Swoboda and Mary Beck entered the oratory. Mary also entered the extempore, where she won third place. In DECLAMATION, the annual local contest in April was won by Carlyle Steves, who also won at Redlands, thereby becoming eligible for the national contest at Topeka, Kansas. Second and third places locally were won by Raynold Hawley and Linden Martin. In DEBATE, Grossmont met Army and Navy Academy and San Diego High School, defeating the latter and losing to the former. Beltran Hub- bard, Raynold Hawley, Mary Beck, Barbara Andrews and Iohn Crippen composed the teams. At Redlands Hubbard and Hawley reached the fifth round before being eliminated. In the annual TOASTMASTERS, CONTEST, Mary Beck and lean Brady Won first and second at Coronado. Mary won second at both San Diego and Los Angeles, becoming eligible for the national contest.
