Heading one of the most necessary and useful depart- ments in Grossmont High School, this teacher has served in never-failing devotion to the success of Gross- mont and Grossmont students, holding up the ideals of our school, helping to preserve present traditions and to institute new ones. We are honored in having her at the head of our splendid art department. lt is with pride and a sense of deep appreciation that we dedicate the 1934 'gEl Recuerdon to Miss ELSIE MORIARTY FQREWQRD EL RECUERDO-the memoryl The memory of happy C-rossmont days among our foothill environmentl The staff have wished that this year, our El Recuerdo shall symbolize for us all, and serve as a reminder in coming years, these foothills which serve as the background for our school, the source of the term by which we are known to our friends, the picturesque approach to the heights of life which a school ideally should be. And so, long years after your high school days are over, when they are left to you only in mem- ory, may this book bring back a little of the inspiration which your Foothill days gave you, with their crowded schedule of friends, activi- ties, and experiences. PoULsoN l The present Senior B class has been bulleted hither and yon by the winds of fate and has had a difficult time trying to promote activities. This will be Grossmont's second mid-year graduating class, and the members have had to brave even more difficulties than the previous class, as the mid-year novelty has worn off. However, as Iunior Bis, they assisted materially in presenting the Iunior prom, which doubtless would have been impossible without their aid. The following members of the class are to be congratulated on the Fine spirit which they have shown during their careers in Grossmont High School thus farg they have been a valuable part of the school life, and we hope they will enjoy every success as they conclude their course next Ianuary: Victor Arnell Katheryn Bell Eldredge Betts Purl Brickey Carrie Church Edward Douglas Henrietta Estrada Olga Farnsworth Annie Forward Melanie Gardner Dora Hall Schuyler Hawes Ruth Hawley Consuelo Head Dorothy Hill Quinton Iohnson Alice Lamp Mary Faye Laughrin Audrey McCarthy Horace Miner Wilbur Morgan Evelyn Myers Leo Okey Mabel Okey Rolland Packard Virginia Pattillo Harriet Peterson Carlos Salazar Ardell Short Ralph Stewart Katra Tucker Lowell Twedt Florence Vodicka Iohn Webb Betty White Warren Whiteman Welton Williams lack Zippwald A's B's: IUNIORS GIRLS: Top Row: Martha Owashi, Fern Wheeler, Katherine Kitzman, Juanita Stum- baugh, Violet Abbott, Jane Baltes, Ruth Stewart, Mary McDonald, Alberta Duncan, Virginia Vodicka, Margaret Griflith. Of the 626 pupils enrolled in Grossmont Union High School, about sixty-two percent are members of the Associated Student Body. The administration of the body has be:n smooth and conscientiously carried out by the students in charge. The outstanding milestone achieved by this year's commission is the securing of a chapter of the California Scholarship Federation, charter for which was secured during the spring semester and public installation held just before the close of school. The yell leaders-Ella DeFalco, Betty Turner and Fern Wheeler- chosen by the student body officers, performed consistently in leading student enthusiasm at games throughout the year. Iohn Crippen Barbara Andrews Mary Beck Raynold Hawley Linden Martin lean Brady Iilla De Falco Beltran Hubbard SPEECH Prominent among school organizations is the Grossmont Speech Club, organized this year with approximately twenty-five members. Membership is gained only with recommending grades in public speaking. Officers are Beltran Hubbard, president, Raynold Hawley, vice-president, Marjorie Swoboda, secretary, and Don Floto, treasurer. Events sponsored have been a Story Telling Contest, won by Paul Gaston, and various preliminaries to select representatives in inter-scholastic competition. The local chapter, National Forensic League, in its fourth year, is ora- cered by Mary Beck, president, and Marjorie Swoboda, secretary. Linden Martin, Beltran Hubbard, lean Brady, Raynold Hawley, Carlyle Steves, Barbara Andrews and Iohn Crippen, and speech coaches, Miss Edith Grass- mueck and Mr. LaZelle Smith, are also members. Membership is by points secured in inter-scholastic competition. This year, the Forensic League spon- sored entrance in the Redlands State Contest, April 20-21, including original oratory and extempore speaking as well as the declamation and debate of past years. Marjorie Swoboda and Mary Beck entered the oratory. Mary also entered the extempore, where she won third place. In DECLAMATION, the annual local contest in April was won by Carlyle Steves, who also won at Redlands, thereby becoming eligible for the national contest at Topeka, Kansas. Second and third places locally were won by Raynold Hawley and Linden Martin. In DEBATE, Grossmont met Army and Navy Academy and San Diego High School, defeating the latter and losing to the former. Beltran Hub- bard, Raynold Hawley, Mary Beck, Barbara Andrews and Iohn Crippen composed the teams. At Redlands Hubbard and Hawley reached the fifth round before being eliminated. In the annual TOASTMASTERS, CONTEST, Mary Beck and lean Brady Won first and second at Coronado. Mary won second at both San Diego and Los Angeles, becoming eligible for the national contest. THE MILIISSIIC DEPARTMENT Music in Grossmont, this ear, as alwa s, has la ed an im ortant and Y Y P Y P en'o able art in school life. The Music De artment, under the com etent 1 Y P P P leaderslii of Mrs. Merle Donohue and Mr. Edwart Ortiz, has roved out- P P standin Y, both vocall and instrumentall , in its active work on man ro- 2-, Y Y Y P grams throughout the year. Besides the regular organizations, and addi- tional frou , the Mixed Double uaftets, have re resented the de artment in P P P on many occasions. The principal effort this year of all organizations was concentrated on the fourth Annual Spring Concert, presented on May 10th. In this concert, Alfred Noyes, famous ballad, The Highwaymanf, in cantata form, with music by Mark Andrews, was given an excellent high school premiere, having heretofore been college work. Also, in the Annual Christmas Pageant, the Glee Clubs, Choruses, and the Orchestra combined with other departments to present Grossmont's traditional Yuletide gift to the community. THE GIRLS' GLEE CLUB made many appearances this year, entertaining local clubs, and singing for various school programs, including the Annual Spring Concert. An outstanding feature was the participation of ten members of the club in a program with Charles Wakefield Cad- man at the San Diego Rotary Club. The ten chosen girls were: Patty Foster, Myrtle Shallock, Mary Iones, Doris Kichline, Zola Swoboda, Carrie Church, Fern Wheeler, Violet Abbott, Melanie Gardner, Alice Lamp, and their accompanist, Marjorie Swoboda. Officers are: Mar- jorie Swoboda, President, and Patty Foster, Secretary-Treasurer. THE BAND, directed by Mr. Ortiz, has achieved the reputation of being one of the best high school bands in Southern California. It has played at athletic events, in a concert each semester, and in the Annual Spring Concert. Edward Ortiz, Ir., is Concertmaster. THE ORCHESTRA, conducted by Mrs. Donohue, combines junior and senior divisions. It has appeared at plays, assemblies and programs throughout the year. Exceptional work was done in the Spring Concert and in the Christmas Pageant. OFHcers are: Betty Anne Iackson, President, and Orland Huffman, Treasurer. THE MIXED DOUBLE QUARTETS, directed by Mrs. Donohue, were organized this year. Despite their short existence, the group is popular and much in demand for community as well as school programs. Out- standing features in their career have been a radio broadcast over KFSD on a P.-T. A. program, and starring parts in the Christmas Pageant and the Highwayman.' Ralph Golden is their leading officer. , , I A GIRLS' GLEE CLUB AND MIXED DOUBLE QUARTETS GLEE CLUB: Front Row: Margaret Johnson, Katherine Kitzman, Fern Wheeler, Zola Swoboda, Violet Abbott, Mary Jones, Mary Dent, Doris Kichline, Margaret Ware, Harriet Cross, Winnifred Rehmke, Mary Bliss, Marjorie Swoboda, Patty Foster. M. C. A., has had a successful year, carrying out its program of Hcreating, maintaining, and extending throughout the school and community the high standards of Christian characterfl which constitute the objective of the organization made up of older boys of the high school, a group of younger fellows known as the Hlunior Hi-Y' leading up to the dominant group, which, at Grossmont, serves largely as a complementary boys' organization to function as does the Girls' League among the girls. Two events this year have dominated the social calendar: the annual Father and Son Banquet, February 14, and the Escondido-Grossmont Girl Reserve-Hi-Y Dinner Dance. A vocational guidance meeting, the cleaning of the G', and a dance, besides the regular meetings, have also dotted the busy program of the organization.
