Miller McLean SPEECH While the Grossmont Speech Department consists of regularly organized classes, embracing ele Lmdsley mentary and advanced work in cunningham Washington oratory, extemporaneous speech, Smith and debate, the local chapter of the National Forensic League is the most active force in the promotion of contest work in speech. This organization at Grossmont is in its third year. Member- ship is earned by points secured in inter-scholastic competition only. Ianet Miller is the president, Thomas Cunningham, secretary, and Willard Smith, treasurer, while Byron Lindsley, Betty McLean, Beltran Hubbard, and Carl McCarthy, as well as Miss Edith Grassmueck and Mr. LaZelle Smith, of the faculty, are also members. Speech activities this year included the annual oratorical contest sponsored by the San Diego Toastmasters Club, won by George Washington, who took first place in San Diego and fourth at Pasadena. Second place went to Thomas Cunningham, who won third in San Diego. In Debate, two seasons, one during the fall and one during the spring semester, were entered. In each, Grossmont met Army and Navy Academy and San Diego High School twice. In the fall division, with the exception of one decision, lost, non-decision debates were held, while in the spring rounds, Grossmont won one and lost three. Thomas Cunningham, Betty McLean, Byron Lindsley, VVillard Smith, Nadine Brown, Forest Cornelius, Carl Mc- Carthy, George Washington, Beltran Hubbard, and Harry Godwin repre- sented the school in debate. In Declamation, the annual local contest, April 28, was won by Ianet Miller who represented the school at Redlands May 12. Second and third places in the contest were won by Linden Martin and Thomas Cunningham, respectively. The Vacher Cup Contest concluded the yearis speech work.
