Miller McLean SPEECH While the Grossmont Speech Department consists of regularly organized classes, embracing ele Lmdsley mentary and advanced work in cunningham Washington oratory, extemporaneous speech, Smith and debate, the local chapter of the National Forensic League is the most active force in the promotion of contest work in speech. This organization at Grossmont is in its third year. Member- ship is earned by points secured in inter-scholastic competition only. Ianet Miller is the president, Thomas Cunningham, secretary, and Willard Smith, treasurer, while Byron Lindsley, Betty McLean, Beltran Hubbard, and Carl McCarthy, as well as Miss Edith Grassmueck and Mr. LaZelle Smith, of the faculty, are also members. Speech activities this year included the annual oratorical contest sponsored by the San Diego Toastmasters Club, won by George Washington, who took first place in San Diego and fourth at Pasadena. Second place went to Thomas Cunningham, who won third in San Diego. In Debate, two seasons, one during the fall and one during the spring semester, were entered. In each, Grossmont met Army and Navy Academy and San Diego High School twice. In the fall division, with the exception of one decision, lost, non-decision debates were held, while in the spring rounds, Grossmont won one and lost three. Thomas Cunningham, Betty McLean, Byron Lindsley, VVillard Smith, Nadine Brown, Forest Cornelius, Carl Mc- Carthy, George Washington, Beltran Hubbard, and Harry Godwin repre- sented the school in debate. In Declamation, the annual local contest, April 28, was won by Ianet Miller who represented the school at Redlands May 12. Second and third places in the contest were won by Linden Martin and Thomas Cunningham, respectively. The Vacher Cup Contest concluded the yearis speech work. TIHIE MUISIIC DEPARTMENT The Music Department, under the leadership of Mrs. Merle Donohue and Mr. Edward Ortiz, has been active in many programs throughout the year. All efforts were concentrated toward the third Annual Spring Concert, which was given April 28. In this concert, Charles Wakefield Cadman,s recent can- tata, The Indian Love Charm, was produced for the first time on the Pacific coast. Also, in the Annual Christmas Pageant, the combined Glee Clubs, Choruses, and Orchestra repeated the successful performance of previous years. THE GIRLS' GLEE CLUB made many appearances during the year. Its officers are Lois Masterson, president, Margaret Milner, secretary-treas- urer. The girls have sung for clubs in La Mesa, El Cajon, Bostonia, and Lakeside, as well as being featured in the P. T. A. radio program over KGB. Of outstanding importance was their work in the Annual Spring Concert. THE BAND, directed by Mr. Ortiz, has become an organization of which Grossmont may Well be proud. It has been in evidence at many athletic events, and in both the spring and fall concerts. Lily Abbott is the drum major. THE BOYS, QUARTET needs little introduction. It has achieved the reputation of being the best quartet iniheihistory of Grossmont. The boys, Alfred Douglas, first tenor, Paul Gaston, second tenor, Byron Lindsley, first bass, and Ralph Golden, second bass, made their debut at the La Mesa Women's Club. Since that appearance, they have participated in many school programs as well as those of various communities. THE ORCHESTRA, conducted by Mrs. Donohue, has appeared at plays, assemblies, and programs during the entire year. The combined junior and senior orchestras did exceptional work in the Spring Concert as well as in the Christmas Pageant. THE BOYS' GLEE CLUB has also made numerous appearances this year, their outstanding performance being in f'The Indian Love Charm. It has for its officers Byron Lindsley, president, and Paul Gaston, secretary- treasurer. GIIIRILSS' SPQIRTSS This year the work of the Girls, Physical Education Department has been centered largely around the Girls' Athletic Association. To become a member of this organization it is necessary for a girl to have participated in at least two major sports. Headed by Harriet Garfield, president, Elizabeth Kitzman, secretary, and Dorothy Hawk, treasurer, and under the expert direction of Miss Iosephine Kollmyer, girls, gym instructor, the G. A. A. has made this sport year an especially active one. At the conclusion of each sport season, it sponsored a feed for the girls' varsity and winning class team. Money from the G. A. A. treasury was donated for the construction of a tennis ping-board which was presented to the school. Finally, in the place of the usual spring program, it acted as host to nine girls and a sponsor from each of the schools of the county at a Play Day on Saturday, April 29. Girls' letters are obtained on a point basis, with only a few girls in school now in possession of the coveted trophies. The sports in which the girls participated this year were as follows: fall tennis, volleyball, basketball, track, hockey, spring tennis,.baseball, and tumbling. ln each major sport, a varsity was chosen from the school at large. Members of the varsity volleyball team were: Mary Duncan, Phyllis Harding, Phyllis Miller, Ella DeFalco, Harriet Garfield, and Eleanor Lewis. Those composing the varsity basketball team were as follows: Fay Turner, Odell Buck, Ella DeFalco, Edith Swink, Phyllis Harding, and Cleo Cooper.
