Washington, the illustrious Father of our Country, himself, attained to success only through loyal support from his countrymen. So, with this, our own special problem, the publication of the 1932 EL RECUERDO, the co-opera- tion of the entire school with the Staff has been necessary to produce a successful book. To that spirit of co-operation- from student body, faculty and adminis- tration-we owe any degree of success we may have achieved. We, the Staff, hope only that our efforts will gratify your expectations and furnish you a lasting and pleasing record of the year's activities. y iN George Washington, whosc it bicentennial the world l pleases this year to honor, we : gl find embodied those enno- bling characteristics of wisdom, sympathy, leadership, and high ideals of service, which earned him rightfully the proud title, Father of His Country. Beside the name of Washington, we feel it fitting to place the name of one in our midst in whom we see repeated these characteris- tics-a man who leads firmly but under- standingly, unhesitating but patiently, and who leaves the mark of his personality upon every student who knows him. To Mr. I.aZelle Smith the Twelfth Edition of EL RECUERDO is gratefully dedicated. u mn.. A. under the direction of Mr. Evarts, County Sec- retary, applies well at Grossmont the purpose of the organization: to create, maintain, and extend throughout the school and community high standards of Christian character. Grossmont chapter was founded in 1927 and has now a membership of sixty in the combined junior and senior divisions. During the first quarter of this year, the Y enlisted the aid of all Freshman boys to repair the Grossmont G, made by the chapter last year. Beside regular activities, including sponsoring group study of voca- tions under leadership from local business men, it held the annual Gross- mont Fathers' and Sons' banquet in April. joint meetings were held during the year with Point Loma and Escondido Hi-Y's, and with the local Girl Reserve chapters. GENERAL MECHANICS. The forty-seven students enrolled for study under Mr. E. W. Kenrick specialize in blacksmithing, concrete, pump and water systems, surveying, the making of implements and the con- struction of gas and electric motors. All the shop classes make splendid showings in the Spring exhibit. MECHANICAL DRAXVING. Sectional drawings of motors has engrossed most of the time of the Mechanical Drawing students, under the guidance of Mr. Kenrick. Dono- hue and Mr. Edward Ortiz has played an important part in school life this year---both vocally and instrumentally. Beside the regular organiza- tions, two additional groups, the Instrumental Trio and the Double Quar- tet, have represented the department on many occasions. The principal effort this year of all organizations was concentrated on the Second Annual Spring Concert, May 6. Here band, orchestra, chorus of one hundred mixed voices, and members of a sixteen-hand piano en- semble combined to make the concert a production of lasting appeal. Also, in the Annual Christmas Pageant, the facilities of the department were employed, combining with other departments in the presentation of Grossmont's traditional nativity celebration. THE BAND, directed by Mr. Ortiz, has flourished mightily in the two short years of its existence. Witli Drum Major Barbara Freeman, the Band has appeared at many athletic events. It will be remembered for the fine interpretive music played in the Fall Concert as well as for its performance over Radio KGB, and in the Spring Concert. THE ORCHESTRA, conducted by Mrs. Donohue, has been in constant evidence at plays, assemblies, and programs. Both junior and senior divisions were used in the Spring Concert, as well as in the Wasliing- ton's Birthday Bicentennial program. THE GIRLS' GLEE CLUB made many appearances this year. Its officers are: Vera Marshall, President, jane Wells, Secretary-Treasurer. The girls have appeared before clubs in La Mesa, El Cajon and Lakeside, at the Naval Hospital and over Radio KGB. They joined forces with other music groups in the Spring Concert, producing the cantata, Taras, by Decker. THE BOYS' GLEE CLUB, newly organized, replaces the former Boys' Chorus. Byron Lindsley is its President, Paul Gaston, Secretary- Treasurer. The boys, too, have made numerous public appearances, their outstanding performance being noted in the Spring Concert. , thi? The story of the play is that of a young lady who, unable to decide between two candidates for her affections, asks the advice of the love expert, a columnist in the evening paper, Miss Alice, who arrives in professional capacity, bringing with her her fiance. In the confusion arising from conflicting advice, Miss Alice, the expert, loses her fiance to her young client. Vera Marshall, Phil Parker, Lois Masterson, Helen Smith, Phil Creaser, Betty McLean, Byron Lindsley, Kenneth Blucher, jane Wells, and Virgil Swoboda gave an excellent per- formance. Grandma Pulls the String was Grossmont entry in the one-act play tournament at Russ Auditorium February 13. The cast was composed of the picked performers chosen from three complete casts who performed before a committee of judges in the local auditorium. Olive Hockaday, Don Pearson, Vera Marshall, Vera Long, Lois Masterson and Nanette Couts were chosen. Q On April 15 was given the second student body play, Nancy Ann, by Heyward-fa story of the tribulations and triumphs of a little debutante who, tiring of the control of four aunts, seeks dramatic prowess on her own account. The large cast of flfteen students was headed by Ruth Mar- shall and Don Pearson, and ably supported by Don Lindes, Frances Bagby, Fern Muller, Iona Wolters, Harriet Garfield, Olive Hockaday, Eleanor Lewis, Margaret Cave, Louise Cory, Russell Smith, Lloyd Smith, Lisle Shoemaker, and Harry Garfield. Two dramatics classes this year have accommodated the large number of students interested in this study. These have, in addition to regular class work, presented several skits and one-act plays for outside organiza- tions, notably The Wedding and The Trysting Place for community Masonic groups. The Senior play, scheduled for the first week in june, was not selected as the Annual went to press. FOOTBALL season started with only fair prospects, but after losing the first league game, the team fought its way into a tie for the league championship by upsetting the powerful Coronado team in the most excit- ing game of the season. The co-operation of the squad with Coach Mashion and the ability to click when necessary made the season a success. BASKETBALL season began with dim prospects. The teams soon rounded into championship form, however, to win several trophies, the most coveted of which was the all-'round team trophy awarded to the class B team in the A. A. U. tournament. The Varsity and class D teams tied for league championships, and the class C won the championship in its division undisputed. TRACK this year was the most successful in Grossmont athletic his- tory. The Varsity and class C teams won the Southern League Champion- ship in a very convincing manner. As the BASEBALL season is not Hnished as this Annual goes to press, it is impossible to print all results. Our team looked to be one of the strongest ever to represent Grossmont on the diamond, judging by early- season scores. More enthusiasm was shown in TENNIS this year than ever before. Many students were out for this sport, boys and girls alike. Norris West won the boys' tournament locally, and Lillian Barnett the girls', these students thereby earning the right to represent Grossmont in the Southern League Tournament. GIRLS' SPORTS THE VARSITY CLUB is made up of all girls earning a letter. To earn a letter the girls have to participate in all major sports and at least one minor sport. Members of this club are Ruth Gibbs, jean Fuller, Mabel Rapp, Alice Gould, Harriet Garfield, Velma Shepard, Rhoda Fuller, Lil- lian Barnett, Dorothy Church, Florence Fansher. THE GIRLS' ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION is composed of all girls who have participated in two or more major sports. The President is Ruth Gibbs, Secretary-Treasurer, Florence Fansher. VOLLEY BALL is the Erst sport of the year, hence interest is usually highg this year the games were particularly good. The junior team won the championship. In BASKETBALL, each class had two teams, an A team and a B team, the exceptioiyboing in the Senior class where there were one B and two A teams. Competition was keen and games were all close and exciting. The two Senior A teams and the Sophomore A team tied for the champion- ship in that division, while the Freshmen won the undisputed champion- ship in the B division. HOCKEY is the girls' hardest sport offered at Grossmontg hence Miss Josephine Kollmyer, instructor, picked only two teams from the entire school. The two teams tied in the three games that were played. TENNIS drew a large amount of interest this year, and as a result, two singles, one doubles, and one mixed doubles tournaments were held. Dorothy Church won the lirst singles and Lillian Barnett the second singles tournament. Lillian Barnett, Alice Gould and Harriet Garfield were the girls' representatives in the county tournament. OLYMPIC BOUND was the name of this year's Girls' Physical Edu- cation program. Its success was due mainly to Miss Kollmyer's untiring efforts and the fine co-operation of all girls of the department. The pro- gram represented numbers typical of almost every country represented in the 1932 Olympic Games. BASEBALL, being the season's last sport, was unfinished as the Annual went to press.
