A Forward Look to the Class of ’56 I was surprised to receive a letter from my former principal back at G. H. S., Mr. Kemble. He wanted me to find out all about the Class of ’56. I was chosen since I had already acquired a modest fortune in oil field equipment and had the time and money to spare. I had no trouble in knowing where to start since my class had been honored with the presence of one of the three richest men in the world, James Fewell, who owned the state of South Dakota with all its cattle and most of Argentina. James knew of one of my classmates since he had Will Rogers Martin employed as his foreman and chief advisor. James also knew of John Ahlfinger who was now the mayor of Thornton. James advised me to visit dear old Groesbeck to learn more about my former classmates. I made reservations to fly to Texas and then learned of a revival being held by James Walker. I talked to James that night and he told me that William Rhodes and Martha Johnson were doing missionary work in the Philippines. Ellis Holden was also a famous preacher in the Western states. I ate breakfast at a swanky restaurant the next morning and fell out of my chair when I met the proprietor who was John Easley. He said that Harry Lowenthal was the chicken king of the world and supplied him with all the chickens he used. When I reached the airport I noticed two mysterious gents and was scared to death when they boxed me in a corner and told me to keep quiet. I nearly fainted when they pushed back their hats to reveal the grinning faces of Jearl Martin and Del Lemons. They were the top agents of the F. B. I. since they had a wonderful knowledge of the criminal mind. They told me that they often saw Judy Melton who was a congresswoman and a prominent candidate for the presidency. I was equally surprised to be sold a ticket by Dolores Henderson who was happily married. She told me that Barbara Slaughter was the highest paid stenographer in the world. She also said that Patsy Fitts was the receptionist for that nationally known doctor William Head. When I reached Groesbeck I stepped off the plane and looked directly at a sign advertising the personal appearance of that nationally prominent recording star Mary Clay. A second glance revealed that it was sponsored by the Lenamon Aircraft Company owned by John Lenamon. These shocks were topped however as I hailed a cab and stared straight into the face of Tim Lawless. Tim knew all about Jon Ferguson and told me he was the President of Texas University. He also told me the cab I was riding in was the property of John Oates and Bubby Pool, who were partners in the cab company. I asked him to take me to the best hotel in town and he took me to the El Swanko owned by Carl Joe Perry. Carl Joe asked his manager to give me a special room. I was speechless when I met the manager who was none other than James Gilliam. 1 unpacked and decided to see the sights in old Groesbeck. The first thing I saw was a huge sign saying Walkers Fashion Shoppe. On a hunch I entered and found Nelda Walker, proprietor of the most famous women’s store in the world. She told me that Larry Stewart was the owner of a huge chain of sporting goods stores as well as being a married man with triplets. One of Larry’s largest stores was managed by Walter McPherson and his missus the former Martha Stone. Later as I strolled down the street I met a woman carrying a huge bouquet. I thought she was familiar and on closer inspection discovered she was Evelyn Thompson who with Wilma Willis ran a huge flower shop. She said she often saw Nelda Clay, a happy housewife with six children. As I continued on my way I spied a car dealer sign saying, “Trade with Honest Gayle Weaver, the public’s friend. I entered the building and found Gayle busily trying to sell a car to a prosperous appearing young man who turned out to be my good friend Garvis Shields. Garvis was a famous race car driver who had polished his skill on the Box Church road. I could only talk to Garvis a few minutes since I had promised Mr. Kemble his report by 2:00 o’clock that evening. 1 barely finished it on time and rushed to his office. After he had read it he agreed that the class of ’56 was one of the most outstanding to leave Groesbeck High School. VALEDICTORIAN Larry Stewart SALUTATORIAN Dolores Henderson Class Will of the Class of 1956 THE GREAT STATE OF TEXAS, COUNTY OF LIMESTONE Know all men by these presents, that I, Nelda June Walker, of the County of Limestone, State of Texas, being in good health, supposedly sound mind, memory and intelligence and still slightly above the age of eighteen, wishing to divide as desired, the requests made by and in behalf of the Senior Class of 1956, do hereby publish this the last will and testament of said class, hereby revoking all other wills and debts heretofore made. The class, in its entirety, does use the following manner to dispose of its members and their abilities, which of course have been outstanding. One half of said class to return to the halls of higher learning after these unforgettable four years have ended. The other half is to be divided between Matrimony, making a living and our dear old friend. Uncle Sam. To the faculty, some of whom are graying at the temples and thinning at the top, we leave this message. In future days when things look sad, think back to us; things an’t so bad. To the people for whose benefit this testament is written we bequeath the ability for everyone to have a “ball’ on the Senior Trip to New Orleans. We have the record of having two Senior boys on the 440 relay team which ranked second in the state track meet. Also we had one, Larry Stewart, to make all-state in basketball. Having nothing more outstanding to bequeath we shall proceed with the personal bequests by the Seniors to those indicated Juniors. (a) First, Nelda Sue Clay leaves her ability to have beaux in all colleges, namely A M, Texas, and Sam Houston to Marilyn Ashbum and Barbara Henderson. (b) James Edward Fewell, alias “Cowboy Jim” renders his ability to make just some money with them cows to Billy Avant. (c) Nelda Walker and Judy Melton bequeath their ability to have a good old fashioned brawl one day and be best buddies the next to Pattie Franklin and Semie Berry. (d) Delores Henderson wishes to leave all her brains and the luck of getting an engagement ring her Senior year to Linda Kilgore and Catherine Juarez. (e) Garvis Shields, Billy Head, and Leo Davis wish to leave their knowledge of making the most of what they learn in Chemistry, referring to wine making, to Bobby Beaver and Terry Don Roach. (f) Martha Ruth Johnson wishes to leave her technique of giving the wrong answer to a question and it being right to Woodie Ann Baldwin. (g) John Dean Easley and William Rhodes bequeath all their dramatic talents to Tommy Browder. You 11 be a star someday, Tom. (h) Martha Stone leaves her ability to have two boys’ class rings and get away with it to Annette Radar and Suzanne Caudle. It’s really quite simple, girls. (i) Evelyn Thompson, Barbara Slaughter, and Wilma Faye Willis leave their typing and shorthand abilities to Mona Campbell, Virginia Raymond and Shirley Webster. (j) John Oates bequeaths his taxi route from school to town each evening for a certain group of girls to John Murphey. (k) Walter Joe McPherson and Jearl Martin leave their abilities to woo two Big Hill girls to Aubrey DeBrock and Tommy Gere. Get ’urn, boys. (l) Gayle Weaver bequeaths his adoring ways of giving the Mart girls a buzz to Tommy Criswell. (m) Carl Perry leaves his way of getting the most out of bookkeeping because of his approaching marriage to Marion Dick. It really isn’t hard. (n) Patsy Fitts leaves her ability to get an Aggie that lives in Mexia to Patty Hanyan. Will that do, Patty? (o) Mary Edna Clay wishes to leave her ability to get a way to the lake when it looks impossible to Janis Jones, Barbara Stohler, and Virginia Henderson. (p) Charles Pool leaves his knowledge of how to soup up a hot-rod that will thrill all the girls to Marvin Kin-sala. I see you have already started. (q) Del Lemons and Will Martin bequeath their ability to have just some kind of ball in Houston to Spike McLean. (r) Larry Stewart and John Ahlfingers leave their most outstanding athletic abilities to Freddie Parmlev. Show um how, Fred. (s) Tim Lawless and Jon Ferguson bequeath their secret formula for making perfect lye soap in Chemistry to Gene Sharp. (t) James D. Gilliam and Ellis Holden, Jr. leave their cool, calm, and collected way of getting along with all the teachers to Jerry Therrell. (u) John Lenamon and James Walker leave their shady spot on the campus of G.H.S. to Kenneth Nevland. You'll know where to find him next year, girls. (v) Harry Lowenthal better known as “Croppy” wishes to bequeath his position of being the smallest and most loveable Senior boy to Cecil Wolfe. In closing, we would like to say to our room mothers, class sponsors, faculty, and administrators who have gone to great lengths in order to help us in every possible way; thank you from the bottom of our hearts. I know that no class before us has appreciated it more than we have. I therefore nominate, constitute, and appoint Mr. H. O. Whitehurst as executor of this last will and testament of the Senior Class of 1956. In testimony whereof I have hereto signed my name, in the presence of the Senior Class of Croesbeck High School, my attesting witnesses, who at my request and in my presence, and in the presence of each other, hereunto sign their names on this 25th day of May, A.
