They tend, therefore, to reflect in their objectives the needs and desires of that society. Schools do have an active role to play for they should and do influence social progress, at least, by improving the functioning of the members of society. Your experiences in the production of this “Year Book” is your influence upon your classmates and friends. Sincerely yours. % i PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE May I take this opportunity of expressing my appreciation to the student body for their cooperation and fine school spirit that has made this one of our most successful school years. Football 51-52-53 CLASS OF '53 CLASS DAY Special Awards Athletic Awards Band Awards American Legion Awards Martha Cook CLASS PROPHECY by DENE POWELL I pushed back my typewriter and unsealed the letter from Mr. Frank Kemble, the principal, back at GHS, asking me to find out all I could about the various members of the Class of ’53. He said, We chose you because of your position as a feature writer for the Mississippi Tribune.’ I made a list of the class and started down the line. I knew to find Mary Franklin, who was the designer of the most exotic costumes ever worn by American women, at her dress shop in Jackson. I dropped by her shop on my way home and as we were talking, a nice looking young man asked to look at a gift for his wife. We recognized him as Bill Bond, who owned several amusement parks in Texas, working chiefly with the Bingo games in Galveston. He told me Glen Judah was directing the high school band in Miami, Florida, and Charles Clay was operating a huge gambling casino in Reno, Nevada, called the Silver Slipper. The next morning I boarded a plane to leave Jackson, Mississippi for Groesbeck. When I glanced across the aisle, I saw Jerry Burleson and Joanne Jones. Yes, they were Mr. and Mrs. now and their home was in Virginia. They were on their way to Houston to visit Mary Neal Smith and her family and had come through Mississippi to see Mary Neason, who was one of the highest paid stenographers in the state. As we talked, a pretty stewardess came down the aisle and speaking of surprises--this was it! None other than La Neal Thetford. The time passed swiftly and I decided to stop over in Houston. As I rode down the street, I saw a big sign, Dream and Eat Cafe, owned and operated by Eugene Willis. I told him of my mission and he said, I’d like you to meet my head waiter.’’In a second, Bobby Carrell was standing in front of me. I left the cafe and was attracted by a hugh poster in front of a theater. Let the golden voice of B. G. Renfroe chase away your blues and put a song in your heart tonight. I wondered if it could possibly be Billy Renfroe, and, on further investigation, I found it was. Since the next day was Sunday, I decided to go to church and then go on to Groesbeck. Bright and early, I left my hotel room and began to search for a Baptist church. I was soon there. I walked into the building just as the preacher was mounting the platform. It was Charles Rosson. After the service I talked to Charles. He told me two of his deacons were Larry Fike and Orion Plummer. Larry said he owned a ranch seven miles out of Houston and Orion was the proprietor of a big grocery store. After lunch, I boarded the train and was soon leaving Houston far behind. Uponmy arrival inGroesbeck, I decided to go to the high school. I was just fixing to step into the office to see Mr. Kemble, when I saw a woman coming down the hall. It was Bettie Rasco. She had a position as typing instructor. She told me I’d have a million more surprises, but she gave me no hint what they might be. I soon found out when Glendall Rand came through the gym door attired in football togs. He was coaching the fighting goats and leading them to many victories. They told me about a special program that was to be in the school’s big new air conditioned auditorium that night and begged me to come. That night at 8:00, I was in the auditorium and in a very few minutes, I recognized David Wimberley. He was now a car deale r, specializing i n hot rods. Then we saw Martha Har ringer, who had finally cornered that guy and they had a home in Groesbeck. I noticed Wynell Shields Stone sitting on the next row with her husband and three little boys. I talked to them a while and she told me they lived in Marlin and she was a regular contributor to the poetry section of several prominent magazines. Just then, Mr. Kemble introduced the mayor of Groesbeck and believe it or not, it was none other than Jack Cook III, the playboy of English IV. Jackie began to speak, Y ou’ve all heard of Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis. Well, tonight we have a comedy team that tops them. Yes, they are Dean and Jerry, too. The curtain was drawn and I saw Dean Ridge and Jerry Ferrill beginning one of the best comedy acts I’ve ever witnessed. Afterwards, I hurried backstage to talk to the boys and while waiting, I recognized Edward Curl, who was the manager for the team. James Hendrix was driving the truck that carried their props and costumes. The next morning I noticed a smart shop with this sign, Baker’s Ladies Apparel. I was met by Jeanette Baker. She had gone into business for herself. She said, I want you to meet my secretary. We walked back to her office and there was Kathryn Parmley typing 200 words a minute. I continued down the street and stopped to admire some photographs in the window of a studio. I was especially attracted by a portrait of a small boy who looked exactly like someone I had once known. Claude Garrett came out the door and said, That’s Claude the fourth. He told me he and Jack Leach had a joint interest in Groesbeck’s best studio. Just then I spied a policeman coming toward me. I recognized him as Connie Wilson. I left him to go to the hospital where I met Martha Cook, the laboratory technician, who was carrying a tray of test tubes down the hall. She tole me that Nita Shields and Jo Ann Ray were both nurses th re. I met what seemed to be a huge bouquet of red roses. When I looked on the other side, there was Eddie Dick, who was the town’s leading florist, specializing in roses, especially red ones. As I left the hospital, I met Jean Nettles. She and Shirley Wilson were both stenographers, working in the courthouse. They told me Carolyn Sharp, a missionary to China, was speaking at the Baptist Church that night. I decided that the service would be a fitting climax to my adventure. When I gave my information to Mr. Kemble, he said, You’ve just proved that the Class of 53 was one of the most outstanding to ever leave Groesbeck High. CLASS DAY THE GREAT STATE OF TEXAS, COUNTY OF LIMESTONE Know all men by these presents, that I, Claude H. Garrett III, of the County of Limestone, State of Texas, being in good health, supposedly sound mind, memory and intelligence and still slightly above age of eighteen, wishing to divide as desired, the requests made by and in behalf of the Senior Class of 1953, do hereby publish this the last will and testament of said class, hereby revoking all other wills and debts heretofore made. The class, in its entirety, does use the following manner to dispose of its members and their abilities, which of course have been outstanding. One half of said class to return to the halls of higher learning after these unforgetable five years have ended. The other half is to be divided between Matrimony, Making a living and our dear old friend, Uncle Sam. To the faculty, some of whom are graying at the temples and thinning at the top, we leave this message. In the future when things are dark and you want to curse, just think of the past, they could be worse. To the group in whose benefit this testament is written we bequeath the ability for everyone to have a good time on the Senior trip. We also leave a record of coming nearer to winning All District since 1946. Having nothing else left, as a group, we leave it to be divided evenly among the Juniors. There are, however, various bequests by Seniors to those indicated Juniors. (a) First, David (Rio) Wimberley and Charles Clay leave their ability to go fishing and get away with it to Jack Stone and Quillen Stevens. (b ) Larry Fike bequeaths his easy going ways with the girls to Wendell Pool. (Watch him girls) (c) To George Tipton, G 1 e n Judah would like to I e a v e his abilities with t h e brass.(Somebody might turn out an orchestra leader.) ( d ) Mary Franklin leaves her A M Box numbers to Betty Jones. Maybe Betty doesn’t need them, (e ) James (Pruney) Hendrix bequeaths his remarkable ability to leave Uncle Sam flat on account of because, to Wilmer Little. Boy will that come in handy. (f ) La Neal Thetford, Mary Neal Smith and Shirley Wilson leave their technique of catching these out of town boys to Marie LaFoy, Dorothy Jean Pierce and Ethel deCordova. ( g ) Charles Rosson bequeaths to Gala Joy Cox his amazing abilities to get along with Mr. Kemble and the Faculty. (h) Connie Wilson leaves his late hours and hard work of the Ice house to Joe Don Baker. Keep it cool Joe. (i ) Carolyn Sharp and Martha Cook leave some of that overflowing knowledge to Patsy Murray, Lou Nell Cox and Lyndell De Brock. Maybe they don’t need it. (j ) Juanita Shields, Jeanette Baker, and Jo Ann Jones leave their knowledge on how to keep the boys guessing to Frances Lenamon, Peggy Crowson and Bonnie Cox. (k) Jerry Ferrill and Eddy Dick bequeath their secrets on how to have more fun on the Senior Trip to John Edd Andrews and Jerry Perry. Better go where the Bears are boys. (1 ) Edward Curl and Jerry Burleson give up their tiger hunting abilities to Billy Cobbs and James (Pete) Henderson. Pretty bad when you can’t see them isn’t it Homer. (m) Glendall Rand leaves his skill as leader of the Seniors to Bob Brodnax. It’ll come in handy Bob. ( n ) Kathryn Parmley leaves her cheerleading abilities to Joan Nabors. (o) Martha Harringer and Mary Neason leave their typing and shorthand skills to Edith Hastings, Frances Whitehurst, and Maurine Pollock. (p) Bill Bond and Jack (Rodney)Cook leave their Basketball skills to Joe Hickman and Allen Holton. (q) Dene Powell and Jean Nettles give up ail those Thornton and Oletha boys to Shirley White and Barbara Rhidenour. (r) Jack Leach leaves to Jerry Pelham all rights to haggle the study hall teachers. Make use of it Jerry Boy. (s) Billy Renfroe and Dean Ridge leave their corner at the lake to Wesley Oakes and Cecil Johnson, (t ) Jo Ann Ray and Bettie Rasco leave to Jo Lynn Netties and Maxine Sims their cool quiet way of getting along with the teachers. (u) Eugene Willis, Bobby Carreli and Orion (Koochie) Plummer leave with great honor the power behind their undying efforts for these five years, to Dan Connelly and Glynn Nance. In closing, we would like to thank the room mothers, class sponsors, faculty, and administrators who have guided us through these many pleasant days without whose help these unforgetable school years would not be complete. I therefore nominate, constitute, and appoint Mr. H. O. Whitehurst as executor of this last will and testament of the Senior Class of 1953. In testimony whereof I have hereto signed my name, in the presence of the Senior Class of Groes-beck High School, my attesting wittnesses, who at my request and in my presence, and in the presence of each other, hereunto sign their names on this the 1st day of June, A.
