Text from Pages 1 - 136 of the 1951 volume:

Dedication In sincere appreciation of their time and efforts, willingly spent for the advancement of education for the students of Groesbeck High School, we wish to dedicate this issue of The Taog to the members of the Board of Education. These trustees have enabled us to develop love and respect for fellow men, to be consecrated to hard work, clean living, and fair play, and to be “a part of all that we have met” because of enriching experiences we have enjoyed in Groesbeck High School. Board of Education J. F. Jackson, President Reuben Scharff Mrs. B. L Bradley E. E. Browder Mr. J. O. Ashton Mr. Milton Ferguson SUPERINTENDENT’S MESSAGE MEMBERS OF THE STAFF AND FRIENDS: The task of compiling a year book is long a n.d arduous. Your determination to make this, the Mid-century Annual .measure up to the high standards set by your predecessors is indicative of the character of the Staff. You have reached your objective in every sense of the word. As the years go by I know you will receive a great deal of pleasure and satis-f act ion reviewing the happenings of 1950-1951. The administration congratulates you upon the completion of a job well done. Principal's Message The 1950-1951 school year has been a memorable one in many ways. You, the students, are more versatile, richer in experiences, greater in leadership, and more advanced intellectually for having taken part in all the activities depicted in this T aog. The keen interest in our work and the exuberance of our play are reflected in the pages of this annual, a book to be treasured. My heartiest congratulations to the Taog staff and its sponsors for this excellent book, and my sincerest wishes to one ofthe happiest and most cooperative student bodies of Groesbeck High School. E. C., so one night 1 phoned my old classmate, Billie Jean White, oil millionaress and owner of a nearby airport, and ob-tained a reservation on the morning plane to Washington. Boarding the plane the next morning I could hardly believe my eyes when I saw the stewardess was Bennie Lou Toney. I was even more surprised when Lou told me she had long ago given up marriage to become an airline hostess. Lou went on to tell me that on stops across the country she had met many of our old classmates. She related that Tommie Jean Anderson was one of the top actresses on the Broadway stage and that Anne Parten was reviving memories of Mae West as a bubble dancer in Detroit, while Marilyn Neely had settled down in Hollywood with her movie star husband. Lou and I continued our chat until the plane sat down in Chicago for a pilot change. As the new pilot entered the plane I recognized him as none other than Charles Otto. After renewing our acquaintance Charles and I sat down in the cockpit and discussed our old school days. Charles related that on a recent flight to China he had the pleasure of meeting Joanna Curlee, who had been doing missionary work there for the last six years and that on another flight he had learned James Coe and Fred Langston were hunting big game in Africa. In a few moments the big plane landed at the Washington Airport and I bade Charles farewell. As I crawled into a taxi to leave the field, I recognized the face under the wheel as that of Don Johnson. Don told me that he had been driving a cab in Washington since Harry Truman was defeated for re-election in 1952. We then discussed the rise of Jimmy Bradley as the a c e of the Washington Senator’s pitching staff. Don also informed me that Charles Smith now owned the biggest cattle ranch in West Texas and that Josie Beard and Rhoda Goodrich were secretaries in Washington’s Pentagon Building. On reaching the Capitol grounds, I bade Don farewell and proceeded on my way to the Library of Congress. As I entered the Library I came face to face with two gentlemen whom I quickly recognized as Senator Jack Hawkins a nd T. G. Neason, Secretary of Agriculture. Jack and T. G. stated they were on their was to the Senate Chamber to hear two o f our five star generals deliver addresses, and invited me along. The first speech, which critics said ranked with that of MacArthur’s in ’51, was delivered by General of the Army, Elmer Raborn, and the second by General of the United States Air Force, Wayne Eproson, who had led the first great Atomic raid on Moscow in 1956. After the speeched we had lunch at the Hotel Mayflower where Dwight Brown and his Band of Renown were up for a three day stand. After lunch, I said good-bye to T. G. and Jack and made my way t o the airport where 1 caught the plane for my old home town Groesbeck. 1 had decided to r e t u r n to Groesbeck because I had heard many of my old classmates still lived there. After landing at the Groesbeck Airport, I caught a taxi into town and got out on main street. As I walked down the street whom should I meet but Delaney Barganier. Delaney was wearing a big sheriff’s badge and told me that he had recently been elected Sheriff of Limestone County. We decided to get a bite to eat and strolled down to Lynn’s Cafe. How surprised I was to learn ihe Cafe was now owned by Mary Murdock and her husband. Glancing to the rear of the cafe, I was shocked to see my old crony, Budge Kimbell, laboring over a pile of dishes. That’s right, he was a dishwasher. After talking to Budge we learned that Teresa Glasco, the former Teresa Jones, was living in Groesbeck again with her hu sba nd and five children and that Kenneth Baldree and Gilbert Kickman were the co-owners of a spanking new Drive-In-Theater on the Buffalo Highway. We left Budge and drove over to the high school where we were greeted by Wayland Hardison, the head football coach, and Joe Long, the new Agriculture teacher. We learned from Joe and Wayland that Kenneth Roach and Jimmy Hirth were fur trappers in Alaska and that Charles McGilvary w a s a John Deere tractor salesman in Waco. After a while, I persuaded Delaney to drive me to t h e airport where I boarded my plane for home. GERALD GIBSON Jack Wade Hawkins-----Valedictorian Elmer Raborn------Salutatorian Guest Speakers THE STATE OF TEXAS KNOW ALL MEN BY THESE PRESENTS: COUNTY OF LIMESTONE That I, Budge Kimbell, of the County of Limestone, State of Texas, being of supposedly sound mind and memory and above the age of seventeen, calling to mind the uncertainty of the future of the Senior Class of 1951, for and in behalf of the Senior Class of 1951, do hereby make this our last will and testament, hereby revoking all others heretofore made. FIRST: We do desire and direct that our body be disposed of in the following manner and apportioned to the following devisees: (a) Sixty percent of said body to be used in research in the hope of finding therein and instilling therein at least a small portion of knowledge, by the various colleges and universities throughout the state. (b) Thirty percent of said body to be used by the business world, provided the business world is willing to assume the risk involved, and by the State of Matrimony. (c) Ten per cent of the said body to be used in the armed forces of our country to carry on the fight in the absence of the Atom Bomb which, so far, is unused in the present conflict. SECOND: We give and bequeath to the Administrators a nd Faculty of Groesbeck High School, who have been our guiding light through the pitfalls and disasters of the past five years (they didn’t miss a one), the hope that after associating with the Class of’51 from the Eighth Grade through the Twelfth, that they are now properly trained and prepared to meet with any and all obstacles that may confront them in the coming years, up to and including sudden death. To Mrs. Waldrip the graduates of the Family Relations Class leave the comforting thought, “Time heals all wounds.” THIRD: To the Junior Class as a whole, the Seniors take pride in bequeathing two awe inspiring records, namely, (1) making more money on our Senior Play than has been made by any program of any type ever held in G. H. S. and (2) the record for graying teachers’ hair. No other two classes combined have ever so much as challenged this in the history of our school. FOURTH: The following individual bequests are made by the various members of the Senior Class to various members of the Junior Class: (a) To the undergraduate who studies hard to have his work in first, Archie Brisendine leaves his ability to take a whole year to learn one hundred lines of poetry. Archie’s philosophy is, “A thing quickly done leaves time to be wasted.” (b) Teresa Jones a nd Anne Parten bequeath their cheerleading technique to Betty Moore and Sue Pitts. (It gets mighty cold out there, girls.) (c) Josie Beard, Joanna Curlee, Mary Murdock and Marilyn Neely bequeath their talent for getting more said and less done than any other girls in Mrs. England’s classes to Edna Earl Holden and Willie Dean White. (d) Wayne Eproson bequeaths his ability to get along with the teachers, especially Mr. Kemble, to David Roach, with the warning to watch it, “Give ’em an inch and they'll take a mile.” (e) Jack Hawkins and T. G. Neason bequeath their ability to know more accidentally than most people do on purpose to the Junior who needs it most. (f) Billie Jean White and Rhoda Goodrich leave their knowledge of the typewriter to next years typists. (g) To the underclassman who has brains to spare, but is quiet about it, we leave the timidity and knowledge of Elmer Raborn, Gerald Gibson and James Coe. (h) Dalaney Barganier bequeaths his tendency to do nothing on the grid-iron until he gets mad, at which time he turns into a one-man line, to Charles Walker, Joe Glynn Comer, Tommy Hastings and Tommy Joe Weaver. (Remember now, stay mad, fellows.) (i) Jimmy (Flapjack) Hirth and Billy (Don Juan) Perry bequeath their skill at putting Jinx Tucker on the verge of suicide every time the Goats play football, to Oscar Wiley, D vid Roach and Darwin Wilson. (j) Charles Smith bequeaths his batting average and home run ability to next year’s centerfielder. (k) Don (Two-Gun) Johnson and Kenneth (Bo-bo) Roach leave their talent for keeping one girl hooked and the rest of ’em interested all the way through school to the Junior most in need of this skill. (l) Jimmy (stick) Bradley leaves his speed ball and control to Eddie Jones and Eddie Dick, as well as any other prospective pitchers. (m) Kenneth Baldree and Wayland Hardison leave their trick shots and basketball genius to next year’s team. (They make these shots occasionally.) (n) Lou Toney and Tommie Jean Anderson leave their technique for keeping all the boys interested and one to two on the line at all times to Joyce Henderson and Marvis Watts. (o) Gilbert Hickman bequeaths his speed and knowledge in Trig to Fay Johnson, John Cox and Josephus Harrienger. (It’ll come in handy!) (p) Dwight Brown leaves his original composition, “Trumpet Bounce” along with all interest i n the solo trumpet music to Leland Cox. (q) Joe Long and Charles McGiluray leave their vast knowledge of Parliamentary Procedure to W. N. Stone and Maurie Killingsworth. (They have it down pat!!) (r) Charles Otto and Fred Langston leave their ability to charm the girls, keep them guessing and still manage to keep out of their clutches to Kerry Burleson. FIFTH: To our Room Mothers, Sponsors, as well as the entire Faculty, we, the Senior Class as a whole, wish to leave our sincere thanks a nd appreciation for all of the many wonderful gestures made by them. We hope that their friendship is among the things we may take with us from the halls of G. H. S. I hereby nominate, constitute and appoint Mr. H. O. Whitehurst as Independent Executor of this our will and testament. In testimony whereof I have hereto signed my name, in the presence of the Student Body of the Groesbeck High School, my attesting witnesses, who at my request and in my presence, and in the presence of each other, hereunto sign their names on this the 3Qt day of May, A.
