My Dear Friends: Nothing binds men together or helps them understand and appreciate each other more than common experiences. That art or literature which never dies, describes experiences or expresses thoughts and feelings common to men. I am thinking of these lines written by Whittier: Of all sad words of tongue or pen The saddest are these, it might have been . Why do these words live? They express truth. Everyone knows the moaning of it might have been . We have all known the dismay, the heartache of some irretrievable loss that could have been prevented had we been wiser or quicker. Today the entire world is caught in a disaster because we were not wise or ready.

It has been a source of inspiration to all of us to see the whole-hearted enthusiasm that has characterized your efforts in paying tribute to the courage and faith of all the young men and women who have gone from Groesbeck High School to uphold the military might and democratic spirit of the United Nations in this global war. May you always be on the alert to find power to do, wisdom to understand, and strength to achieve.
