O IARMIINGTON .....,..,... 6 Led by Bill Mack, the Farmington Indians edged the Griswold Wolverines in their first game of the season. Farmington capitalized on two fifteen yard penalties and a pass to set up the score late in the third quarter. On the opening kickoff, Red Page recovered an Indian fumble. It looked as if Griswold would be off to a fast start as Ronnie Gwiazdowski and Pete DeGregorio carried the pigskin down to the twenty yard line on the next two plays. However, a fifteen yard penalty and Farmingtons ability to hold ruined the Wolverines best opportunity to score. Late in the fourth quarter Griswold threatened again as a long pass from Leo Ahola to XVill Gero brought the ball inside the thirty yard line, However, Parma ington held on fourth down and then ran the clock out. GRISVUOLD .......,.... 14 PLAINFIELD .,.....,,.,. O The Griswold W'olverines tlawed their way to victory over arch-rival Plain- held on the Fielders' home ground to draw first blood in the Quinebaug Valley Conference, Although Rich juber and Pete DeGregorio scored the two touchdowns, Ronnie Gwiazdowski piled up the most yardage for the Green and White. Both of the W'olverine's touchdowns came in the second period. The Green and White was also threatening for a third tally from the Fielders' six inch line, but was stopped as the half ended. The second half was strictly a defensive game as both teams' forward walls held the opposition when the chips were down. Late in the fourth quarter. Peanuts LaFlamme broke away for a 62 yard jaunt which was the longest run of the day. Rich ,luber pulled him down on the GHS 28 yard line with a desperate leap from behind. oR1swoLD .,.r.,..rr,. 1 Kiiimgiy ,.........r . 21 The Green and YX7hite had the high hopes of upsetting the Big Red from Killingly High. However, the Redmens smooth-clicking backfield proved to have too much speed for the XVolverines. W'ith the score 21-O in Killingly's favor, the Green and XY'hite began to move in the last half. However, the damage had already been done. Griswolds lone tally came early in the fourth period on an Ahola to Gero pass followed by an off tackle play by Gwiazdowski. McNally scored the extra point on a pass from Gwiazdowslci. 39 .Z'f i'A a .. Q Q9 G

F00'l'IlAliL FOOTBALL SQUAD First Row, Left to Right: Tommy Atkinson, Dick Lindell, Art Russi, Anthony Dombkow- ski, Joe Piatek, Pete DeGregorio, Izzy Cohen, Cliff Marion, jan Slonski, Freddie DeLorge, Ronnie Gwiazdowski, joe DeLorge, Jerry Moskowitz, Second Row: Rcland White, Manager, Jackie Sullivan, john McNally, Bob Couture, Red Page, john Eberl, Leo Ahola, Will Gero, Eddie Eberl, Marty Wood, Rory Slonksi, Francis Bugbee, Coach Dick Thomas. Forced to play out of its class three times and suffering three of its four defeats therein, the Griswold Wolverines came out of the 1953 season with a record of 2 wins and 4 losses. Our two victories came at the expense of our arch rival, Plainfield, whom we played in a home and away series. Losses were suffered at the hands of Class B Killingly and Farming- ton, Putnam, which was just within the Class C limit, and Berlin. At the beginning of the season, about 25 candidates came out for the football team. Included in this number were nine seniors. These were jerry Moskowitz, Marty Wood, John McNally, Izzy Cohen, Will Gero, Ronnie Gwiazdowski, Leo Ahola, joe DeLorge, and Red Page. Our most damaging setback came before the opening of the football season when jerry Moskowitz fractured his collar bone. As the season went by, the underclassmen began losing interest, and at our last game we had 14 players in uniform. FIRST STRING Linemen: john McNally, Marty Wood, Eddie Eberl, Izzy Cohen, john Eberl, Red Page, Will Gero. Backfield: Pete DeGre- gorio, Rory Slonski, Leo Ahola, Ronnie Gwiazdowski, Coach Dick Thomas.
