On October 14 1949 the ELLIOTT Cyclones journeyed to Griswold to play one of the top games of the whole conference season Grmswold who was undefeated and Elliott who had not lost and who had been txed only once were both very good teams However the Txgers turned out to be the superxor team by wmmng 14 to 0 over the Cyclones The scorers for Grxswold were Marvln Steffen 6 Carroll Haynes 6 and Ted Weston 2 We went to GREENFIELD on October 21st to play a very tough ball game whlch ended m a tue 26 26 This game was also Greenfxeld s homecommg They played a tough game all the way and were ahead of Grxswold 19 6 at the half Wmth only 35 seconds of the ball game remaxnmg the score stood 20 26 1n favor of Greenfleld Then Carroll Haynes starred by m terceptmg a short pass and runmng 90 yards for a touchdown tlemg the game 26 26 The fol lowxng scored for Grxswold Haynes 13 Haye 7 and Weston 6 Accordmg to our schedule we were to play ANITA October 28th Gr1swold started out very well by scormg twlce m the fxrst half both on passes chucked by Carroll Haynes one to Dzck Haye and the other to Carl Tldgren leavlng the score 14 to 0 at the half In the second half Grmswold rolled on by scorxng two more touchdowns The fmal score was 28 0 xn favor of the Tigers The scorers for Grlswold were Mercer 6 Tldgren 6 Haye 7 Haynes 7 and Weston 2 WALNUT came to Grxswold on Dad s Nmght November 4th to play the last conference game of the season Grxswold defeated them 41 2 Walnut was the fzrst conference team to score agaxnst the mxghty Gr1swold Tlgers Thelr two pomts were scored by a touchback Scorers for Grxswold were Haynes 12 Weston 10 Mercer 6 F Houser 6 Ackerman 6 and McCullough 1 EXIRA the champxons of the1r conference were all pepped up to play Grxswold Novem ber 9th the last game on our football schedule The flrst half of the game was faxrly even but after the half the Txgers opened up and won 21 7 Scorers were Glen Mercer 12 Dwayne McCullough 6 Ted Weston 2 and Ward Zmmmerman l Grzswold was well represented on the ALL CONFERENCE team thms year Fxve of their players Forrest Houser tackle Carroll Haynes back Marvm Steffen guard Teddy Weston back and Glen Mercer back were all on fxrst team wh1le Maurzce Pontlus center was on th1rd team Movmg on we fmd Gr1swold also represented on the ALL SOUTHWEST team Here we fmd Forrest Houser tackle on ftrst team and Carroll Haynes back on thxrd team Marvm Steffen guard recexved honorable ment1on For the cllmax of honors the Iowa Daxly Press Assoclatxon put Forrest Houser on the second ALL STATE team and the Regxstar and Trlbune placed hzm on thexr thzrd team Thxs xs somethxng whxch rarely happens m a school thxs szze and certamly congratulations are ln order for Forrest The annual football banquet was held November 14 1949 At thls txme letters were awarded to 21 men and to our 2 managers The players recewmg letters were Semors Royal Blerbaum Rxchard Haye Carroll Havnes Forrest Houser Manon Houser Dwayne McCullough Maurlce Pontlus Marvm Steffen Teddy Weston Harold Wxnston and Ward Zzmmerman Jumors Glen Mercer Jack Mxller Neal Mxlne Sherwm Sunderman and Ray Wolf Sophomores Carl Tldgren Mlchel Weston and managers Norman Hansen and Max Saffer Freshman Rlchard Fender Congratulatxons boys 42 1 1 ' 1 1 1 1 - 1 ' 1 1 - l . . . . g . , . . 1 ' ' ' ' - . - . , , . , . - 1 1 , . . . Fouaasr HOUSLR CARROLL HAYNES c c P- Football C C-Pm September 9th comes earl, xn the school year and Coach Jessen kept remmdlng us that we played RED OAK on that date We very much wanted to wm in thxs opening game and prove that our playmg was up to par but we were beaten 14 to 3 The three pomts were made by Forrest Houser by a fleld goal from the Z0 yard llne The JAMBOREE was held at OAKLAND on September 13th where Grxswold drew Avoca and was scheduled to play at 9 15 The conference IS dxvxded xnto two sections the north Anxta Walnut and Avoca the south Grlswold Elhott and Oakland The south came out on top wxth a score of l9 0 Oakland scored twlce Elhott once and Griswold faxled to score On September 16th the up and at em Grxswold football squad motored to ADAIR 1n excellent football weather The teams were faxrly evenly matched until the Tmgers broke loose m the thlrd quarter to be on top Z5 to 6 Scorers for Grxswold were Teddy Weston 1Z Glen Mercer 7 and Dxck Haye 6 The great AVOCA football squad journeyed to the Grxswold Athletxc Fxeld on Septem ber Z3 1949 Avoca had been defeated by Woodbxne the week before so they were really up and at us The two teams were evenly matched durmg the first three quarters but ln the closmg mmutes of the ball game Forrest Houser was shxfted mto the backfleld and on the fxrst play ran for the flrst and only touchdown of the ball game The conversmon was m complete leavmg the fxnal score 6 0 At approx1mately 5 15 the Txgers gathered at the Grxswold dressmg room to begln the long trip to Essex When we arrxved there all we saw was sxgns bearxng the words Beat Grlswold They were really out to defeat us Grxswold started the game wxth a bang by sc ormg early nn the fxrst half The mzghty Essex team dxdn t llke this and came back very strong and won 14 6 Grlswold s one and only touchdown was by a very neat pass from quarterback Carroll Haynes to rxght end Dxck Haye On October 7th the T1gers played the OAKLAND team and our squad was really out to defeat them We took the ball out on the Griswold 45 yard lxne and our hard drxvlng halfback Ted Weston went for a touchdown on the f1rst play of the game The fxnal score was Z0 0 xn favor of the Grxswold Txgers Scorers for Grxswold at thls game were Glen Mercer 12 and Ted Weston 8 41 1 1 , .fy , . .Y , 1' ' 9 VW? 2,1 o- a ain 0' An 1 , . 1 . . . . . . 1 1 1 5 1 1 1 - ' ' 1 1 11 1 11 - Y - 1 Y ' Y ' 1 ' 1 ' 1 1 I - ' . . . . ,, - 1 1 - no - - . . , - 1 - u I I 7 ' Y I l - , - ' ' 1 1 - , .
