CHAPTER III The Happy Go Lucky Semors Selectxon of offzcers and candxdates for carmval kmg and queen clas play rmgs Jumor Semor Banquet and Alumm Banquet yes all of these hxstorxcal events cla1med the attentxon of the forty seven .Tumors and thelr helpful sponsor Mr Wxlcox durmg the year of 1948 1949 Those chosen to preside over thls versatlle class were Dxck Haye as Pres1dent Marvm Steffen as Vrce Pres1dent and Wzmfred Justice as Secretary Treasurer The class presented thexr Jumor class play New Brooms whxch IS recorded ln th1s hls tory as one of the best Th1s event took place on January 31st The month of March brought good news to the .Tumors for th1s IS the month when thexr long waxted for class rmgs arrwed ln thexr op1mons these wonderful rmgs added a great deal to their present d1gn1ty The Jumors honored the class of 1949 on Aprll 25th wxth thelr Jumor Semor Banquet The theme was the Copocabana Club complete wxth palms and South Amerxcan musxc Speakxng of banquets members of the Junror class had the prxvllege of be1ng waxters and wa1tresses at the Alumnx Banquet on May 18th CHAPTER IV The Ever Popular Senxors And now we have entered upon the last chapter ln thls glorlous hlstory book The class has reached the goal for whxch xt has strwen for eleven long and trymg years Forty sxx sophxstx cated Semors marched mto the1r home room to greet Mr Anderson thezr sponsor The class was sorry to dxscover that Maurxce Mzlne d1d not return th1s year There was one loss durmg the year whlch left forty flve to graduate Johnny Nelson d1d not fmxsh the year wxth them The electlon of class offxcers was held on the opemng day of school Those chosen to pre and Secretary Treasurer J D LaMaster Beverly Nelson and D1ck Haye were the class chorce for kmg and queen The year was full of act1v1t1es for the enthuslastxc Semors Many were actwe m musxc sports school paper annual and varxous other act1v1t1es The Semor class play Gzrl Shy presented March 14th under the d1rect1on of Mr Wxlcox was a howlxng success 1n every way The Jumor class sponsored a lovely banquet for the Semors The Semor class as the honorary guests entered the gymnasxum to fmd a breathtakmg slght of beautlful elaborate dec oratlons They wlsh to thank the Jumors for the grand txme they had on that unforgettable mght Slup day whxch was on Tuesday Aprxl 25th was no doubt one of the most xmportant events this year for the Semors The day was spent lnvestlgatlng the capxtal at Llncoln Nebraska and v1s1t1ng Boys Town The brg day was completed after seemg a movxe m the evemng and then returnmg to Grxswold May 5th proved to be an even more lmportant date for the class of 1950 as thas was the day they skrpped school for good Some gave a bxg slgh of relxef whzle others took a more regretful attltude for they reallzed that they would never agaxn have classes at dear old G H S The year was brought to a close by Baccalaureate Servxces on May 7th Class Day Exer cases on May 8th and Commencement Exerclses on May 9th The commencement speaker was Frank Mlles from Des Momes Iowa CONCLUSION Seven members of the class have gone through all twelve years at Grx wold together They are Marvm Steffen Gxlbert Knsmger Marlon Houser Forrest Houser Helen Wooley Geraldlne Mueller and Laurel W1ll1ams So we add the last page to our hlstory book whxch brmgs our hlgh school days to a close Wmth fondest memorxes we now prepare ourselves for whatever jobs fate has 1h store for us 1n a new and dxfhcult and yet exceedmgly xnterestmg world 19 . . . . . , 5 , . t . - . , . The Hzstory of The Class of 1950 Preface The first xmportant hxstorxcal event recorded in our newly published hlstory book took place in September of 1937 This date marked the beginning of a great career for twenty four little boys and girls who entered the First Grade at Griswold Forty eight little feet found their way to the First Grade room where they met the smiling face of their little blonde teacher Norma Nix The class progressed slowly but surely for eight long years through the grades and Junior High losing some members here and there and gaining new ones Many teachers tried their best to teach them right from wrong as well as to educate their little minds as they passed from grade to grade The teachers were Second Grade Leila Knop Third Grade Minnie Scharf Fourth Grade, Ada Buck Fifth Grade Donnella Warner Sixth and Seventh Grades Gwendolyn Lary and Eighth Grade Mary McDermott The Eighth Grade held many historical events for these ambitious students who seemed to gain great fame in many fields Among the most important events was the carnival whxch was the first to be held since before the war Chosen for the royalty were Gilbert Krxsinger prince and Laurel Williams princess The boys became very popular 1n the field of sports and man aged to reign as champions of the Junior High tournament They were very proud to add one more beautiful trophy to the show case for this wonderful feat On Thursday May Z3 1946 at 10 00 A M a great step was taken by the twenty two mem bers of the Eighth Grade Yes it was the day when they received their Exghth Grade dxplomas The record of Carroll Haynes covers a whole page of the history book for he was the valedic torian Velma Silk received great fame also for being salutatorian ln slightly smaller print we find the name of those who recewed other awards of achievement Marvin Steffen and Geraldine Mueller were granted the citizenship awards Receiving instrumental music awards cewed first and Laurel Willxams second The class officers of this outstanding class were President J D LaMaster, Vice President Laurel Williams and Secretary Treasurer Veneice Rockwell The class colors were old rose and silver the class flower was the white carnation and the class motto was Forward Ever Backward Never CHAPTER l The Green Freshies Forty two Freshmen yes green entered Grlswold High School in September 1946 happy in the feeling that they would now be considered quite grown up The usual initiation was ad mimstered to the boys but the girls slipped by with only a few remarks made by the upper classmen Class officers were elected as follows Carroll Haynes President Gilbert Krisinger Vxce President Laurel Williams Secretary and Velma Silk Treasurer Candidates for the annual carnival king and queen were Laurel Wilhams and Gilbert Krisinger The Freshmen had the privilege and honor of Joining mn several high school parties Their sponsor was Mrs Heald the homemaking teacher CHAPTER Il The Up and Coming Sophomores September 1947 found the class one more step ahead in their careers as up and comxng Sophomores The class enrollment was forty three studious boys and gxrls The class President was J D LaMaster with Gilbert Krismger as Vice President and Edna Meyer as Secretary Treasurer As the month of November approached the class busied themselves once again with the se lection of candidates for the carnival king and queen Grace Ellen Kenworthy was chosen for queen and Forrest Houser for king Six lucky boys and seven girls had the privilege of serving at the Junior Senior Banquet on April 27th and the year was concluded very successfully by the Sophomores and their sponsor, Miss Daft 18 O ! Class Will of 1950 We, the Senior Class of 1950 of Griswold High School, being of sound mind and body, and having fears of no human being on this earth lthat ls except a few members of the faculty, do hereby will all our worldly goods and possessions to the following beneficiaries' To the Junior Class we leave our ability to get to our home room in good time Also we leave our outstanding scholarship and deep respect for our teachers To the Sophomore Class we will our athletic and musical abilities our good sportsman ship and respect for under classmen To the Freshman Class we bequeath all our wonderful intellectual powers which have brought us to our present enviable position We leave to Mr Pontius our superintendent a key to the dark closet in Mr Jessen s office so that he may lock unruly pupils in It To Mr Jessen our coach and principal we leave our late make up slips tardy slips and unsigned report cards We take great pleasure in willing to Mr Anderson the up and coming class of 1951 Mrs Limbaugh we leave our old typewriter ribbons waste paper and worn out erasers e leave to Mr Wilcox all the social security taxes we may pay to take care of him in his old age o Miss Daft we leave all library books that may be overdue We leave all our unfinished themes and outlines to Mr Dyer e leave all our uncompleted physics assignments and experiments to Mr Newcom Also we wish to give him all the sour musical notes that we have been responsible for To Miss Finney we leave all the candy that has disappeared from the home economics room We leave to Miss Fothergxll as much success in her future home as she has had working in the music department To Glen the Janitor we leave any cuds of gum we may have left adhering to the underside of desks bamsters assembly seats or any other likely or unlikely places We leave to Joyce Hansen our office girl the good records of the class of 1950 to be filed away for future use To the bus drivers we leave all the peaceful and quiet rides over the country side The members that make up this outstanding class of 1950 do hereby Separately bequeath the following possessions Robert Barnes leaves hxs ability to walk in high heeled boots to Lloyd Tracy Betty Bellis wills her temper to Nancy Book Do you think you can handle it Nancy Royal Bierbaum wills his excellent toots on his clarinet to Dean Zimmerman Bob Bolton wills his driving ability to anyone who dares take it Marilyn Boseck wills her ability to catch a man to Shirley Paulsen June Burris leaves her fondness of gum to Mr Jessen By the way Mr Jessen what s your favorite flavor 'P Ramona Clark wills her pretty blond hair to Amelia Gary Peroxide might help Amelia I Georgia Courcier leaves her way with men to Mary Embree David DeKay wills his safe driving habits to Juanita Pelzer How about using them Juanita Boyd Dolch leaves his interest in the Freshman class to Glen Mercer Robert Embree leaves his gift of arguing and his liberal ideas to Dawn Pontius Darlene Fender wills her ambitious ways to Ray Wolf Juanita Hansen leaves her soda jerk abilities to Jean Boseck Dick Haye wills his noon day drives around town with his one and only to Sherwin Sunderman Keep both your hands on the wheel Sherwin Carroll Haynes wills his interest in surrounding towns to Franklin Garey Forrest Houser wills a little of his weight to Roy Weston Marion Houser wills his ability to play basketball efficiently with football tactics to Clifton Jefferson Wmifred Justice wills her matrimonial problems to Dorothy Selders They ll keep you busy Dorothy Grace Kenworthy isn t going to leave anything behind because she s going to take It all witn her Donald Klein wills some of his height to Bxlhe Pace Edward Klein leaves his ability to sleep in government class to Harold Brunk Try it out and see what happens Harold' Z0 I 9 p . 1 , ' D - - . , . - 1 p .
