It started out with a bang on Thursday night with a big pep rally and snake dance at Davis School. On Friday there was the usual pep as- sembly and then the Homecoming parade af- ter school. Many high school organizations, with the help of local merchants, entered floats in the parade. The Queen and her attendants rode in flashy convertibles, fol- lowed by the floats, the team, the band and pep club, and the student body. That night the Tigers were hosts to Osky. The crowning of the Homecoming Queen took place at half time. Orenelensen became 1954 Queen with Nancy Ullrich, Bev Hanson, Dotty Rayl, and Marilyn Lauber as attendants. The Queen's radiance affected the fortunes of the Tigers. They came out victorious, 27 - 13. After the game was the annual Home- coming, and this time, victorious, dance. With the winning of their first conference football game in eight years as the main headline, the defenders of the Orange and Black finished strong with a victory string of three intact. Prior to the Oskaloosa game their luck seemed to rim in the wrong channels, but after a convincing victory it seemed to change directions and flow the right way, After the teamgot rolling, they did a very good job of living up to their namesake the TIGER. MARCHING BAND THE BAND IS PRESENT FOR The Grinnell High School Band, under the direction of Mr. Charles Luckenbill, is open to competent music students from junior-high up. Pre-band training is obtained by private lessons and by participation in grade and junior band. Competition for position in the band is keen. First chair positions are held only by those have mastered the fundamentals of their instrument. The Band is called upon not only for most school functions, but also for participation in city celebra- tions, National Holidays, and most local dog fights. In summer, most members of the band play in the Thursday Evening concerts in Central Park. PSU U' NECESSARY ? Ano Ab A lm Eighty-five excited Band Members stood on Grinne1l's railroad platform anxiously awaiting the 8:13 train. It was August 19, and they were heading for a week-end in Chicago. The en- thusiastic band students and their chaperones stayed at the Hotel CroYd0H. and from Ihtre T-00k several sightseeing tours of the city. The Aquarium, the Museum of Natural History, Chinatown and Skid Row were points of interest that the group visited. Boarding the Golden- State Rocket at 3:45 AM, they arrived in Cleveland about 6:30 Friday night. They presented a forty- five minute concert Saturday at 9:00 AM before the North Central Music Educators' Convention. One of the highlights of the concert was a modern dance number, Green Sleeves, presented by several of the choir girls. Following the concert, Mr. David Foltz of the University of Nebraska directed the dioir in clinic work. Several sightseeing trips were planned for Saturday afternoon and Sunday. The Choir began their trip home at 9:00 AM Monday. Progress towards raising S3200 to finance the trip moved rapidly. The last of six bake sales was held Tues- day, March 1, and on March 2nd, a benefit concert was presented to the Grinnell townspeople. The Con- cert consisted of the numbers the choir sang in Cleveland. A Choir-boosters' Bazaar-Auction was held: several gifs were added to the treasury, and many other means were used to finance the trip.
