It is made up of five seniors, fou juniors, three sophomores, and two freshmen. When a class enters high school it elects two represent- atives its first year and one representative each of the remaining three years. The council meets every Wednesday morning with the advisor, Mr. T. T. Cranny, and a planning board composed of the presi dent and a committee of three meets every Tuesday. Some of its functions are helping to shape school policies, supervising school elections, building the assembly program, providing pep meetings for all the athletic games and sponsoring busses to out of town games whenever possible. The council also works closely with the youth center. This year the council conducted a panel on The Value of a College Education at the State Student Council Convention held in Ames. April 8 the council also led a discussion group on the topic Citizen ship at a convention of the eastern division in Cedar Rapids., In November the council sponsored an all school party in the high school gym. A. this year were team sports. One of the more popular ones was basketball. The girls divided into teams and had a tournament. There were many good teams but the best team proved to be the Vampires After the tournament ended, a variety of sports were participated in and X enjoyed by all. We had a lot of fun in '52 and hope to have even more fun next year. I Y W G H. CABINET Y. W. SQUAD LEADERS FRONT ROW L zo R: Miss Sorensen, H. Gale, M. Evans, D. Tice Miss Wheeler. SECOND ROW: M. Molison, J. Renaud, L. Douglass, J. Harris. Abel, V. Turner. - -3 Y.W. G. H. Part of every girl's high school life at Grinnell includes her participation in the Y. W. G. H. This organization gives to the girl practical experience in planning and working in programs which are held every two weeks, a chance to hear speakers who give helpful suggestions for the present and the future, and an opportunity to take part in social activities. Our Christmas program presented for the whole school was particularly interesting. With the help of the music departments the story Christmas in Many Lands, was presented to bring the spirit of Christmas into our classrooms. Our banquet for Senior girls and their mothers was a lovely evening with Stars as the theme. The girls worked hard making wagon nut cups to fasten to shining stars in carrying out this idea. The Y. W. squads are organized for the freshman girls. This year the squads were very active find- ing projects on which to work their meeting. The H: O squad made scrap books for the local hos- pitals, the L. L. Cs chose to pack a box of clothes for a Kentucky family and made a cartoon scrap book for the veteran's hospital. The R. F. D. squad, along with their valentine party, had a busy time making hospital bags. With the many projects we try to undertake each year we have fun also raising money for our expenses. Every basketball game finds our Y. W. girls busy selling apples and candy, and the rummage sale in the summer keeps us working diligently carrying boxes, clothes and books to be sold in Miss Wheeler's barn. CHOIR ' ' l I ' , I I l T Q Q 5 3 Y P0 QQ Sai!! rl I Lf. 6.1 V 'st BALLAD FOR AMERICANS When the piano lid in the the music room was raised for another year, the sounds of singing again reverberated through the halls of GHS. After try-outs held before and after school, the ranks of girls' chorus swelled to 110, boys' chorus jumped to 75 and choir boasted a total of 85 members. The year of concerts began with the choir journeying to Des Moines to sing for the State Teachers meeting held in the KRNT Radio Theater. Later in November, members of choir again proved their abil- ity by being chosen to sing in All State Chorus. From the latter part of November until the middle of December, the music floating on the air was beginning to take on holiday tones and the vocal depart- ment prepared for the annual Christmas Vesper service. The high light of the program was a living Christmas tree formed by the choir. In january, plans were laid for the variety show and by the middle of February it had been named Rhapsody in Twelve and rehearsals were going at high speed. The show traced the course of the year through the twelve months with the high points from each. January's winter wonderland provided a perfect setting for the Skater's Waltz, as petite skaters spun and glided over the stage. February followed with red paper and lace valentines for its sweethearts. March went back to the Auld Country for shamrocks and Saint Patrick's Day and then with the coming of spring, April decked the tree-lined boulevards of Paris in green and white to set the scene for romance. In May, lilacs bloomed and in june the traditional bride and groom were joined in matrimony. july was red, white and blue for the patriotic Ballad for Americans. The hot drowsy month of August gave way to Septembers Indian Summer. November in electi ion year means only one thing, and a spirited politi- cal rally took over, complete with brass bands. At the end of football season eight members were added. Basketball brought us five more initiates. Several more boys should be eligible for the club when the track season comes to an end. Throughout the football and Basketball season the programs for all home games were supervised by the club under the direction of Miss Rule. The club put out the program for the sectional tourna- ments. ,Along with this, the club was in charge of concessions at the football games. Again this year, the club attended the Boys State Basketball tournament at Iowa City. A very wel- come affair which seems to be coming an annual event, the dinner at Bill Zuber's restaurant in Home- stead, was enjoyed by the entire club. At the Homecoming celebration during the football season, the student body voted for the queen who was chosen from the following girls nominated by the Honor G Club: Jeannette Starnes, Barbara Moore, Donna Minear, Joyce Mitchell, and Marilyn Smith. Jeannette Starnes reigned as queen and the remaining girls served as her attendants. The main social event is set for May 19, when the annual dinner-dance will be held for the Alumni and their wives, club members and their dates, and several faculty members. Early in May the club will select a queen to reign over the Grinnell Interscholastic track meet and the school year will close with the initiation of the track lettermen. The Future Farmers of America organization includes in its membership all boys who are enrolled in Vocational Agriculture. Early last fall the FFA and the FHA held several jointly sponsored square dances with Mr. Entorf, FFA advisor, calling. These dances were enjoyed by all. This year a system was initiated for collecting and baling the schools wastepaper and for the eventual sale of the paper collected. The chapter organized a basketball team with Loren Bell as manager. Mr. Standerwich, a practice teacher from Grinnell College, was engaged to coach the team. A fairly successful season was enjoyed with the team sporting about a 50-50 mark for the season. The chapter also took part in some FFA contests for parliamentary procedure and public speaking. A number of boys attended the state convention. FFA BASKETBALL TEAM P5 fin t - ..
