Two important educators and elementary prin- cipals in the Grinnell Public Schools. These sisters spent the major portion of their lives in public education in Grinnell. They took several trips to Europe together, the better to prepare themselves to be teachers. Edna was principal of the Northwest School, later known as Cooper. Lizzie was principal of South School. The present Davis School is named in their honor. DR. HARRY GAYLORD VVII.I.AItD-Distin- guished surgeon. Graduate from Grinnell College in 1896. Division and district sur- geon of the Milwaukee railroad for thirty years. Resident of Tacoma, Washington. President of Pierce County Medical Ass'n., 19204 President of Washington State Medi- cal Ass'n, 19263 President of Northwest Medical Ass'n., 19303 President of Northern Pacific Surgical Society, 194-1. Dr. Willard was the son of pioneer parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. O. Willard, long time residents of Grinnell. D. VV. QFR ITZQ NOR It IS-Pasadena, California. JOI KA Grinnell High School 1892, Grinnell College 1896. Distinguished as a successful editor and proprietor of the Marshalltown-Times ltepublican and later as president of the Lennox Furnace Company with factories in Marshalltown, Columbus, Ohio and Syracuse, N. Y. Another branch is nearing completion in Grinnell. IN HATHAVVAY SPENCER-G. H. S., '25, Grinnell College, '29. Studied International Law at Harvard, political adviser to Hailie Selassie, King of Ethiopia before and during the Italian conquest of Ethiopia. Connected with the United States State Department after leaving Ethiopia. During World War ll engaged in secret diplomatic work con- nected with the U. S. State Department. At the request of Hailie Selassie, he was released in 1944 to return to Ethiopia as adviser to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ethiopa. He's to be present at the Peace Conference in Paris. lil. KIESEL-was one of our greatest high school athletes. He starred in football, 1901- 02. He starred in track, 00-01-02. For three years he won the mile and half mile in our state meets. In '02 he won the mile and half in the High School National meet in Chicago. He was a student leader and a 'vp student. Entered VVisconsin University 'ng Business Administration. He was in student affairs but did not give athletics too much attention. After leaving college he entered the employ of the Carter's Ink Corp. and later became Western Man- ager with headquarters in Chicago. He res- cued his friend George Longshore from the waters of Lake Mendota. Page Ten Grinnell High School in the fall of 1903 and was one of our greatest athletes. He starred in track, football, basketball, he also was a student leader. He broke the state re- cord the spring of 1904- in the 220 yard dash in the State High School meet in Iowa City. He was a star athlete his 4 years in Grin- nell college. He excelled in track and foot- ball. He was very prominent in many col- lege student activities. He won the Spauld- ing prize in speaking. He took up Y. M. C. A. work and for the past 30 years has been the Y. M. C. A. Secretary of the Philippine Islands with headquarters in Manilla. During most of VVorld War Il he was interned as a prisoner of war at San Tomas. D'lt. O. F. PARISH-Hush Medical College, DR. Dlt. Chicago, Graduate Fellow in American College of Surgeons. Graduate of Carlisle Military College, Penn. Lieut. Colonel in World VVar l. For 4-3 years has practiced medicine in Grinnell. JOHN TAI.BOTT-Graduate of Grinnell High School and College and Harvard Medi- cal School. Taught in Harvard Medical School and was on General Hospital Staff in Boston until VVorld War ll. Granted an honorary degree in science from Grinnell College in 194-6. O HARRY WALDO NORRIS-flleceasedj Granted A. B. in 1886 from Grinnell College. Studied at Cornell University, University of Nebraska and University of Freiburg, Ger- many. Taught for more than 50 years ln Grinnell. 1913-14 exchange lecturer, llarvard University. Fellow A. A. A. S. Iowa Academy of Science. Member of American Micros. Soc., Am. Soc. Naturalists, Am. Assn. Anatomists. An author and a con- tributor to scientific journals. CLYDE KING-U. S. N. R. Graduate of G. H. S. in 1915. After a year in Grinnell College received an appointment to U. S. N. Academy at Annapolis. Graduated in 1922 with an enviable record as a football and basketball player. He was a member of the rowing team from Annapolis at the Olympics held at Antwerp. Left the service to enter business. Called back to service in World War II and was Commanding Officer of the Navy Pre-Flight School at St. Mary's College, California. Listen to latest gossip 'Tween every other measure-- And to pass a rival player Is our very greatest pleasure! Oh yes! The G. H. S. band of 194-6 will always cherish the happy memories of this un- forgettable year! VVhy? Because after a most successful season of popular concerts and music festivals, the band came through with twenty-two Division I ratings in the State Music Contest held in Grinnell April 25-27!! There were twenty A and AA schools entered in the contest. Seventy-five Division I, ratings were awarded these 20 schools. The Grinnell delegation garnered 22 of these 75 Division Is-over 311-My of the total. We are proud of this record which is the best that any band has made in many years.
