I WI '7 won the 120 yd hurdles and placed I Second to his M1 Lamb of New Jumor Semor Pzcmc ton in the 220 yd lows Jacobs and- Puls placed third in the 220 yd dash and mile run respectively and Stoaks also ran to a third victory in the quarter mlle run The mile-re lay seemed to have had an off day and placed second to Oskaloosa in that event The mile relay team Kelly and Work qualified for the State Meet t Ames th following week and Kelly won first and the State championship in the high jump with a jump of 5 feet 11 3 4 inches The relay team placed frfth but the Gnnnell record of the relay team of 1932 falled to be conquered by the winner of 1933 On Memorial Day the team was at Ft Madison and ended the sea son very successfully es they placed in every event entered The mlle relay team of Jacobs Harris Stout and Stoaks placed first in class B Kelly placed second in the high jump and fourth in the century run in class B and Jacobs placed fifth ln that event. The class B medley relay team of Jacobs 1440 yd.J Puls 1220 ydl Kelly 1220 ydl and Stout 1680 ydl placed second A special 440 yd relay for both classes found a team of Puls Jacobs Kelly and 'Harris placed second. I I I . , th . l I 'THE GRINNELtjaEgG1sTER, GRINNELLQ IOWA - 'i I - I - , A ed simple mechanical features, draw- T DRAMA TIC T MAR Y G JONES Hugh School Exlulnt Feature Of Year An exhibxtlon sponsored by several Grinnell High School organizations was held April 27 and 28 ln the gymnasium Originality and lngenu play of the material of each depart ment Students under the supervi sion of their instructors displayed their work to more than two thou sand people The various departments and a brief discussion of each are as fol lows Physics 1 Perhaps the most lnterestang and surely one of the most educational was the Physics exhibit under the direction of Mr Rupert Hawk Such attractions as a mmxature telegraph communication system and electrical wiring system running water from a faucet suspended ln the air by a wire and many like devlces attract ed much favorable comment Manual Training This department supervised by Mr Kenneth Starbuck exhibited many markable both ln deslgn and work manship Several desks tables chests stands and numerous small pxeces were unexcelled in appearance As a dlvision of this department the Mechamcs exhxbit contained several automobile parts illustrating the work in auto-repairing carried on by the shop boys The drawings by the Me hamca.l Drawing class also de serve to be mentioned Science The General Science classes taught by Miss Georgxana Holloway display Cf 'ings and sketches by students, and chemical experiments. An elaborate display of wheels and axles showed how man power could be applied to multiply itself. Orange and Black n Few people have ever witnessed' the actual printing of a newspaper. But this department, under the cap- able: management of Mr. O. E. Niffenegger, illustrated not only color reproduction and mlmeograph- ing, but actually placed a complete paper ln the hands of the visitors. Home Economics The girls of this class displayed their handicraft in no mean pro portions An elaborate exhlbit of dresses besides a. long counter load ed wlth good thxngs to eat Qfrom whxch the men could scarcely force themselves awayj attracted much attentxon This department under Miss Esther Robson deserves special credit Stenographlc A model office was the theme to thxs display In fact the office was so realistic that several young men were about to apply for a position fNo doubt there were some pretty stenographers presentl Plctures made entirely on typewriters proved to be lnterestmg and somewhat amusing to visltors Miss Beulah Hatcher is the mstructor Bookkeeping and Accounting' This department also headed by Mr Niffenegger exhibited several practxce sets completed by students carrying on thxs line of work A brief outline of the entlre course was represented xllustratlng each step ln bookkeepnng and accountlng prac ce Latin of an artlsttc model Forum by the Latin Miss Harriet Korns The display of the Roman classes under proved to be interestxng to many of the visxtors As the Forum was made entirely of soap no doubt the students put in a great amount of work on the project and deserve to be congratulated for their patience Mr Laird Jones and his boys es tablished a miniature farm ln the middle of the gym floor complete with everythxng from buildings to chickens and green grass Ar ' Last, but not least, we shall take up the art exhibmt which contalned pictures and drawings made entlrelyl by Hmgh School art students The plctures were very exqulsmte and ex pressed originality to the utmost The public found that even a high school has artists even though they l - ' . V y A. .. . - - .- L I FOOTBALL SEASON FOR Athletics For Glrls Hugh School Track TIGERS SATISF AC T0 Although as far as games won and lost this years football season 'was not so successful there were several other things that partly off set the fairly bad record By wm nmg from Marshalltown for the second consecutive year the team broke the Jinx that seemed to have been hanglng over them for the past ten years The season started off wlth bang the Tigers taking both Tama and Toledo by a comfortable margin In the next game the Grinnell men lacked somethmg that they had been apparent in thexr previous games and were taken by the Roosevelt Rough Riders 14 13 From that time untll the end of the season the locals seemed to be ln a slump from which they were not able to recover quickly North Des Moines feated the Little Pioneers in turn. The Newton game was the Igreatest disappointment for the locals as it was the first time in seventeen xears that the Newton'ans had won lfrom Grmnell III football In their search for revenge the Txgers took both Marshalltown and Iowa City by a score 6 0 scores The Iowa City game was played Thanks 'giving day mstead of the traditional Newton game George Norris and Melvm Adams co captams of the team were out standlng in the backfleld Norrls playmg quater backa nd Adams half back Also In the backfleld were Brown and Bader quarterbacks Harris and Mason half backs and Kelley full back.
