These people are sTudenTs, Teachers, clerks, adminisTraTors, and workmen. ln The background are some oTher people-TrusTees, alumni, friends-wiThouT whose inTeresT and supporT The college could noT exisT. The excellence of a college is deTermined primarily by The qualiTy of iTs people and by The manner of Their associaTion, noT by The size and archiTecTure of iTs build- ings. Able people joined TogeTher as a communiTy can make a greaT college even .wiTh primiTive TaciliTies. JusT as True religion does noT demand greaT Temples and ca- Thedrals, learning can Take place in The ouT-oT doors, in a huT, in a workshop, or in a barrack. We musT never equaTe good educaTion wiTh impressive buildings. BuT buildings and equipmenT have Their righTful place in educaTion. They are Tools. JusT as a skilled mechanic needs good Tools, skilled Teachers and giTTed sTudenTs need TuncTional and well-equipped laboraTories, sTudios, and classrooms. And because a college expecTs To be in operaTion over cenTuries, iT pays To build solidly and wiTh concern Tor archiTecTural sTyle. Grinnell is in a period of consTrucTion. WiThin The pasT Tour years, Two new playing fields have been builT, Mears Hall has been remodeled, many of our buildings have been improved and refurnished, hundreds oT Trees and shrubs have been planTed, a new healTh cenTer and a new library have been builT, a new men's dormiTory is under consTrucTion, and a new Tine arls cenTer is being planned.
