A distinguished Jewish scholar of the twelfth century, Ben Ezra, by his writings, sug- gested the ideas used by Browning. Selected lines from this Vig- orous poem with its undertone of faith in God have been used as the theme for the 1950 Volume of the Marionette. Page two fb For the past ten years Rev. Howard T. Williams Hall, the pro- posed men's dormitory, is thus far only an architect's drawing, but all of us are looking forward to the day when it will become a reality on the campus. The new building will house 100 men, an increase of 600 per cent over present dormitory facilities for men. Head- quarters for this organization are in the basement of the library building. From this office the Alumni Bulletin is sent out. Under the leadership of the Executive Secretary, Clarence Huffman, the alumni are carrying out a project for raising funds to build Williams Hall, the new men's dorm- itory. Another activity of the club is the annual banquet given in the spring for the graduating class and for all alumni who are able to return to their Alma Mater for the occasion. The Reverend Garl Beaver is the capable president of the association. The times of revival, the inspiration and victories of Youth Week, and the reg- ular blessing of spiritual meals have made this a sacred place dear to our hearts. Members of the quartet are Harry Connor, first tenor, James Wilson, second tenor, James Hane, baritone, and Clinton Butcher, bass. These four young men are from North Carolina, Ontario, Canada, Oklahomag and Wisconsin, respectively. Traveling many miles as representa- tives for Christ and for Marion Col- lege, the quartet has sung for numerous organizations and churches of several denominations in Indiana, Ohio, Ken- tucky, and Michigan. We have found it-a society of outstanding merit. On Rush Day 82 new students pledged their loyalty to the green and white colors and the symbol of the torch. On the softball diamond both the fel- lows' and the girls' teams proved their supremacy. Speaking of selling Marion- ettes, this society won the contest for the sixth consecutive year, thus claim- ing their second loving cup. Their per- centage of sales per member was 1.96 With 399 among their 204 members. Eva Gilger served as president the first term. John Basham was elected for the winter term. Dr. Dayton was again chosen as sponsor. l Ranging at the top this year in com- petitive spirit were the Amphics. Nothing daunted their will to reach for higher goals, and in athletics and in the Marionette Sales Contest their cap- ability Was prominent. Melvin Welch sold 27 annuals for the Amphics, claim- ing the position as top salesman in the school. The Amphics had a total of 307 sales among their 192 members, mak- ing their percentage 1.59. During his years on the campus, John has held positions as vice-president and pres- ident of the Student Conference, pres- ident of the Y.T.C., Eurekan president, and sports editor of the Journal. He has also been a member of the S. A. R., the Intersociety Council, the Dixie Club, Foreign Language Club, the Bio Club, F.M.F., the Art Forum, and the Forensic Club. John has also found time to participate in softball and basket- ball, as Well as being a gospel team member for four years and a leader for three years. ROBERT BERKEBILE Robert Berkebile, from Johnstown, Pennsylvania, first came to Marion College campus in 1943. After being here for only two terms, during which time he Was a member of the A Cappella Choir, Robert was called to serve in the United States Army. Four years later he again resumed his studies here. A loyal member of the Amphictyon So- ciety, Robert has served as president of the Veteran's Organization and as president of the College W. Y. P. S. This year he is president of the Student Council. Elected on the basis of scholarship, leader- ship, character, and ability to succeed. NETTY DAVIS Another Buckeye among those elect- ed to the Who's Who is Netty Davis, who has served this year as women's physical education instructor. An en- thusiastic Amphic who has been out- standing for her participation in sports, she was elected in 1947 to the All-Star Basketball Team. In addition to being president of the C. C. C., Netty is also a charter member of the newly organ- ized M Club, and of the Bio Club. HEYMAN DUECKER Outstanding in chemistry and mathe- matics is Heyman Duecker who comes from Medina, Ohio. In his sophomore year, he was vice-president of his class and sports reporter for the Journal. This year he was Amphic president, a mem- ber of the German Club and the Science Club, and an assistant in the Chemistry Department. ' ROBERT HUGHES For the past three years Robert Hughes has been the men's physical ed- ucation instructor, and for two years was one of the All-Stars. His list of res- ponsibilities include treasurer of the Westerner's Club, assistant business manager of the Marionette, president of the Junior class of '49, Eurekan Pres- ident, and a member of the Student Council. Robert was a member of the Westernaires Quartet and of the Col- lege Choir. He has also been a soloist in the Messiah . UNPHOTOGRAPI-IED R. S. NICHOLSON A true son of the South, R. S. Nichol- son came to Marion College campus in 1946, following three years of service in the Navy.
