'It had already come.' Football Four seniors, three juniors, two sophomores, and four freshmen reported for practice the last week of August. They practiced hard for their first game which was played with Mitchelville, defending co-champions of the tough Central Iowa Six-Man Conference, on the Wildcats field, September 12. Grimes defeated them by a score of 13 to 2. As the season progressed the team won five more games to run their undefeated string to six. In the final conference game, the Wildcats were overpowered by Mingo on the wirrers field by a score of 13 to 8. Grimes was hampered by injuries to three regulars, Ed Baer, Fran Guess, and Rudy Wipperman. This left Grimes and Mingo tied for the lead in the conference and both teams shared the crown. Grimes played its last game of the season against Polk City on a muddy field. Grim s completely overran Polk City and ended the four seniors career with a 66 to 24 victory. The team was chosen the second best six-man team in the state of Iowa by the Des Moines Register. Ed Baer was placed on the All-State First Team by the Des Moines Register. Marvin Bauman gained a berth at end on the third team. Ed Baer led the scoring by running for 18 touchdowns and passing for 8 more. Allyn Guess scored 10 touchdowns, Marvin Bauman scored 8 and Charlie Stefani scored 4. The Grimes team hed an offensive average of 35 points a game while holding their opponents to a 15 point average. -I-LCM-QCOMING 0 6'1rls Ba kefball The 1954-1955 girls basketball squad at Grimes was made up of two seniors, five juniors, four sophomores, and three freshman. A tenative schedule with the following teams has been arranged at the time of this publication: Waukee, Johnston, Woodside, Granger, Polk City, and Urbandale with the sectional tournament to be played the week of May 2-7. Junior High Thirty-one new seventh and eighth graders started another school year August 30, 1954. We welcomed four new classmates, all in the seventh grade. They were John Brown, Barbara Boston, Betty Crawley, and Joyce Widdel. The third Friday we organized a club which we called uThe Junior H1 Wildcatgn, The purpose of our club was to take care of all business and social affairs of the Jr. Hi. Each six weeks we elected new officers and committees, giving each one an opportunity to act in different capacities and secure exper- ience alofg various lines. We also took part in programs and enjoyed games. Our first big event was our Hallow'een Party which we held in the gym. We also thank Mrs. Benton who helped oversee our big supper which was served in the hot lunch room. Basketball practice began for us in December. All tne girls went out and most o the boys. Several of the High School students coached us. We played Johnston in January and Waukee in Februrrv, we lost both games. Eleven members of the band were from Junior Hi and we took an active part in the Christmas musical program. We also part- icipated in the Homecoming festivities with our float nSnow White and the Seven Dwarfsn. At Christmas time, we enjoyed our party with tree, treat, and exchange of gifts. Again on February'l4, we had a big Valentine party. We featured our King and Queen. Prince, and Princess for whom we had earned votes by making A's in our daily lessons in the month of February. Joyce Widdel was chosen Queen: Leroy Shipley, King, Beverly Osborne, Pr1ncessg and John Gasady was elected Prince. We honored them with boxes of candy and let them rule during the party. In the spring we enjoyed other events which completed our list of social affairs. Our school year of 1954-1955 has been a busy and profitable one and we can say that we have enjoved it all. .ie 1 4 A J W lv sl Y , V w Y Yu fa 1 R A N Q..
