from a nearby counlry school were moved In and everyone sellled down comforlably lo a new school year Eighleen pupils enrolled in lhlrd grade We were happy lo wel come James and Belly Tullle from Websler School Sleve and Dorcas Wolfe from Granl No 7 David Boyles from Ollumwa David Bogaard from Johnslon School Jesse House from Missouri and Carol Lee Sal verson who had been in school In Texas Those In fourlh grade who had nol previously been enrolled here were Roger Barlell Janice and Dons Ann Bohrofon Before long lhe days began lo grow shorler and lhe nexl lhmg we knew if was Halloween and of course we had lo have a lrllle parly lo celebrafe On November I0lh lhe Junior Class presenled a play and we en lerlaaned belween acls wrlh lwo songs Mud Pies and The Rheu maliz November broughl us a few days vacalion one for Teachers Con veloin and lwo for Thanksgiving Of course we enloyed lhese days very much Afler Thanksgiving we began work on our Chrlslmas program O December I8lh we presenled our parl of lhe program a musical play enlilled The Season ol Love The nexl day we had our Chrlslmas parly and exchanged gills Everyone received lovely gills and afler Ice cream and cake we wished each olher A Merry Chrxslmas and wenl home for our vacalvon The Lions Club and Legion gave a par ly for us loo We appreciared lhrs very much Afler our vacallon we worked very hard and our nexl break came as a Valenlme parly on Valenlrne s Day The sevenlh grade glrs made us a very nice box which was brlmful of cards when opened For an hour fleel fooled messengers carried greelmgs lo everyone in lhe room and afler lhe usual lreals lhe parly ended March came in like a lion and we had a couple days of snow vacafion Afler lhrs we saw snow men everywhere bul ll was loo deep for sliding Each monlh In our Arl class we made room decoralnons lo ful +he occasion so rl was nol surprising lo see Easler lilies and rabblls every where aboul the room during March April was ralher unevenlful excepl for hours and hours of sludy on reading wriling and arilhmeluc along wilh language geography science hygiene and music By lhrs lime we lhink we are aboul ready for lhe fourlh and flflh grades May Day all over our counlry slarled a new year of work and growlh The lnleresl and alllludes of lhese children loward lhe school depended upon several groups the parenls lhe leacher his friends and lhe communily as a whole The school recognued lhe facl lhal children who enlered fursl grade differed widely in lheir background or readiness for school Some children had many learning experiences before lhey enlered school Children who have older brolhers and srslers had been expos ed lo much lncldenlal learning However on lhe olher hand an only child had had somewhal lhe same experiences bul more from an adull polnl of view Each child musl feel his imporlance as an individual and yel be able lo ful unlo a group Children musl feel a social belonging They musl have a feeling of securlly and above all lhey should be happy Some children lusl nalurally lake beller wrlh olhers and so are happy Olhers who are nol need lo have likeable lralls bulll up All Chu d ren have many good pornls if one can bring oul lhe besl in lhem From lhe earlesl years in school pupils engage rn many lypes of learning aclrvilles bolh rn and oul of school As a means of exlend ing experiences and promollng child growlh reading is of special val ue and is one of lhe mosl imporlanl experiences a child has in firsl and second grades For lhal reason rl should be a pleasanl exper sence and should make up a malor parl of lherr program We began work on reading readiness which gave lhe children framing and acllvllres which prepared lhem for reading The maler :als used were carefully graded so lhal each child proaressed slep by slep Youngslers can only become good readers if lhey read abun danlly in books wrlllen al lhelr level ln addllion lo regular reading periods In our classroom lhe child ren look library books home These library books were selecled from lhe Polk Counly Bookmobsle This library service has been of greal help lo us However in addllnon lo lhal we used malerlal from lhe Slale Traveling Library ll seemed lhal lhe fall days hurried by and Sanla Claus was on his way before we hardly realized il Al Chrlslmas lime we had a share in lhe program Every boy and gurl helped in presenllng lhe play Chrislmas in lhe Toy Shop The children lhoroughly engoyed imllallng lhe loy characlers as well as appearing In lheir colorful coslumes We fell gre lly mdebled lo lhe molhers for lhelr splendid coop rallon in helping make lhs a mosl happy occasion All children love fun Fun is food for lhelr minds and bodies and lhey musl have ll bul in :ls own lime and place Parl of every day
