Now we glance about the room and note wuth awe the muracle of new heughts attauned the nuce coats of tan and shoulders whuch have broadened sunce we last saw all our classmates Not all the tacklung was done un the classroom as the first Autumn days found the boys on the old gruduron Football was now Kung as a competutuve sport The Jr Hugh boys opened the season on the home field by defeatung Bondurant Jr Hugh 25 to I2 In a return game the boys got oF to a slow start but came thunderung back to overwhelm the surprused Bondurant boys 39 to I2 Durung the flrst sux weeks of school we were sorry to lose Betty Rufe also Maxune Hember who moved to Grand Island Nebraska We gauned a new member Phulllp Clark brungung the enrollment to fourteen un eughth grade and twelve un seventh The eughth grade Englush Class formed an Actuvutues Club wuth Muss Moser our teacher as sponsor An unutuatuon party was guven and enloyed by all Chrustmas was a most loyful season and found us unusually busy The seventh grade presented a play An Old Fashuoned Chrustmas for the eughth grade Several took part un the all school Chrustmas program A guft exchange and a vusut from Santa Claus followed by a vacatuon tull after New Years completed our holuday season The begunnung of the second semester brought another change to our room wuth the resugnatuon of Muss Moser Both seventh and eughth grade gave farewell partues for Muss Moser Muss Jones became our Y Y Guudance Counselor for the county spent a day wuth the eughth grade On Feb I4th we were all pleased to be remembered by both com uc and sentumental Valentune greetungs from our fruends We enuoyed a treat and played games uru the gymnasuum durung the afternoon Basketball was most popular wuth both boys and gurls as a wunter sport A Jr Hugh tournament featured for the flrst tume thus year The gurls took an actuve part by partucupatung loyally un the cheering sectuon durung the enture tournament Anna Mae Bauman and Anne Kunsey were members of regular gurls squad Patrucua O Donnell celebrated her burthday un March by entertaun ung Muss Jones and all the gurls at her home where we spent a most enuoyable tume lt was also durung March the pest Mr Mumps sun gled out Donald Kallem as a vuctum for a two weeks peruod Eary un Aprul we ended our spellung contest whuch had been un progress for eught weeks The losers the Roarung Luons and the Navauos planned and carrued out a very peasant surpruse as a treat for theur wunnung opponents the Red Curcle Wunners and the Hawk eyes On Wednesday Aprul I4 all losers brought two sacl lunches to school At eleven thurty they each shared theur lunches wuth a wunner lmmeduately followung all boarded the school bus for trup to Des Mounes where we spent the afternoon at the State Caputol buuldung and the Hustorucal Buuldung We were all thrulled over the specual pruvuleges of beung allowed to enter the governors pruvate offlce and of meetung Muss Parker State Supt ot Publuc lnstructuon The most breath takung moment came wuth the clumb unto the gold dome of our caputol On the way home a stop was made at Reeds lce Cream Parlor All agreed that ut was a memorable trup The wunners thank ed the losers Muss Jones Mr Martens and Rev Boyles druver of the bus for a grand tume The last tew weeks of school brought added actuvutues of baseball for the boys and sewung for the gurls Last but not least were our class members who brought honor to our room through musucal accomplushments Ronald Baer was member ot the saxaphone quartette that won 2nd place un the dustruct contest at Adel Rheta Wuese was a member ot the Clarunet quar tette whuch made several appearances durung the year Ronald Baer Anna Mae Bauman Beverly Booher Donald Kallem Rheta Wuese Her Bert Wulson Joann Boauroten and Dale Johnson played un the school band Later un the year Mr Cassel formed a Jr Hugh gurls sextette composed of Dorus Lomax Joann Bohrofen Anne Kunsey Anna Mae Bauman Rheta Wuese and Patrucua ODonnel They wull sung at some ot the end ot school year actuvutues Anna Mae Bauman Anne Kunsey Patrucua ODonnell and Jean Oyres took part un the concessuons and program at the Carnuval on Aprul 30th Sth 8: 6th Grades Front Row Melvun Wules Lloyd Peutzman Carolyn Kallem Lavern Greut Sylvua Punegar Larry Seubert Albert McDowell Shurley McDowell Judy Folk Joe House Barbara Baer Bdllk Row gzzan Nzlkirrsolgu Zhyluus Rosenberg Roger Bloomfueld Samuel Hunt Bruce Andrus ya o e avu uese Ruth Kunsey Marulyn Bohrofen James Buddle On a beautuful sunny day un September we returned to a new school year To a few Barbara Baer Marulyn Bohrofen Sonya Wolfe and Lavern Greuf ut was a new experience attendung a town school Susan Alberson from Johnston was another new pupul un our room A few weeks later James Buddle uouned us Our enrollment was twenty one eught un the tutth grade and thurteen un the suxth grade It wasnt too long that we were makung Hallowe en decoratuons for our room Each month we made room decoratuons to carry out the theme of the month An unterest un luterature uncreased by lustenung to stones read to us by our teacher Dufferent pupuls gave us book reports The books were selected from the County Bookunobule whuch came every month We all read storues and poems pertaunung to the holudays to help ob serve them and guve us a better understandung why they are celebrat November brought us several days of vacatuon because of teach ers convention and Thankguvung At our Chrustmas program Sonya Wolfe Susan Alberson Ruth Kun sey and Roger Bloomfueld gave readungs on the hustory of dufferent Chrustmas carols and the carols were sung by all The gurls wore whute blouses and dark skurts and the boys wore lught shurts and dark pants After our Chrustmas vacatuon we prepared for semester exams Roger Bloomtueld was hugh un all hus examunatuons the furst semester Thus brought to a close one half of our school year ln February a basketball game was played between the boys and the seventh and eughth grade boys We all enuoyed the game We were all sorry to hear that Barbara Baer was un the hosputal un March Shurley McDowell also went to the hosputal un Iowa Cuty for a Check up Not long after Carolyn Kallem had the mumps and was out of school for two weeks Wuth all back un school we worked on musucal numbers wuth our tonet whuch were played between acts of the senuor class play These were under the durectuon ot Mr Bruggs who was our vocal un structor Mr Cassel taught Instrumental musuc to Sonya Wolfe Marulyn Bohroten David Wuese Marulyn Wules Lloyd Peutzman and Larry Seu ert Along wuth musuc practuce Aprul found us busy completung our studues ot readung spellung aruthmetuc language socual studues sc ence health and art for soon school would be out The partues of the year were held on Halloween Chrustmas and St Valentune s Day We were un charge of the games and our teacher served us treats of candy uce cream and care Marulyn Bohroten Ruth Kunsey Sylvua Punegar Lavern Greuf and Lloyd Peutlman are to be complumented tor beung neuther absent nor tardy durung the school year Our school year has come to a close and wuth best wushes to all tor a
