History On a bright sunny morning in August of 1952 we, the 1956 Seniors of G.H.S. began our high sclioo I career. All of us were green freshmen, weadmit, but under theguidance of Mrs. Paul Brax- ton, our homeroom teacher, Mr. Tyson, our principal andall the other faculty members we pulled through. To further help us make decisions vOe elected Marlene Dudley, class president, Charles Da. I, vice-president and Pat Stokes, secretary and treasurer. As basketball season rolled around we sent many class members toaid the team. Boy! Were we proud when some of us received uni- forms. Time passed quickly and soon it was Spring and almost time for school to be out. As is the custom, we had a hay-ride followed by a weiner roast at the Charles Street Park in Greenville At commencement we were represented by marshals-Marlene Dudley and Bette McCotter. Summer vacation was short and soon we were slaving away again. This time we were silly- sophomores. Led byCharles Dail, our president, Mr. Brown, ouradviser and our brand new prin- cipal, Mr. Bright, we faced the new year. Shortly after school started, we were all sad to see Violet Potter move away. The basket-ball teams included three sophomoreson the starting line-up-Dawn Smith, Joyce K-oon, and Linwood Branch. We were still proud of our same marshals. These two girls also received additional recogni- tion - Bette, forhavingthehighestscholasticaverageand Marlene, by receiving the Home Econom- ICS Award. The followingyeartheycalled us jolly juniorsand thatwas justwhat wewere. I ' msurenone o us will ever forget Mr. Underwood, ouradviser. Our firstmajor business venture was the Junior Play. With the proceeds we dreamed of the day when we would journey to New York. The play was a three act comedy, If Mother Only Knew. Our Prom was a masterpiece of workmanship, every senior will admit. We did away with the record player and gave the seniors a real live- dance band. Our theme Moonlight and Roses- was very effective. Among the honors which were to come to members of our class, Pat Stokes and Fred Taylor received the medals for the Best-all- Round boy and girl We were all very proud of our chief-marshal, Bette McCotter as she led the seniors down the aisle because we knew that next year someone would do the same for us. It hardly seems possible but here we are at last -dignified Seniors. On us fell the responsi- bility and pride of carrying on the annual. Our staff led by the capable Marlene Dudley and Pat Stokes did a wonderful ,ob Meantime ourclass led by Fred Taylor, president and Mrs. AnnieMae Bunch, adviser, increased our treasury by holding bake sales and managing the school store. M.r I °r T °„ « parade came to be a part of our class motto as Nell h l Tka T M - William Douglas -Bill- Jackson, Bob McCotter made Faye McGlohon his bride and Mary Frances Bryan became Mrs. Cannon. .!ah .r ' ' [ banquet is over and we have received our diplomas. Many a sigh of relief and an occasional tear is visible in the eye of parents, teachers, and Seniors. in thi ' f ' ' mi ' u u ' foor-year period of our lives. We hope that if we write a history hooter of ' V iT ' ' ° ' - do. As we close this chapter of our lives may we look forward to achieving our highest ambition r BETTE McCOTTER, Historian A '
