While preparing for my vacation I decided to look up some of my old classmates. I am, incidently, Marlene Dudley, now teaching commercial courses in New Orleans, Louisiana. I thought that one day I would travel back to Grifton. As I stopped by the big West- inghouse Plant in Raleigh I found that Charles Dail is owner. Joyce Koon is leading the staff forward as executive secretary. After having my hair set by a beautician, Bette McCotter, who has introduced one of the most famous hair-styles in America, I decided to stop by the school. Much to my amazement, Herbert Purser is principal. Billy Cox is hired for the next school term as a teacher of Mathematics. The all famous coach of the Grifton Bulldogs is none other than Jimmy Burbage who has all wins and no losses. Good work! Did you know that Mrs. Bunch is still saying Get quiet, children? Among those in the medical field at Grifton is Fred Taylor, leading pharmacist, who has discovered a leading patent medicine. Gathered in the drug store were Lawrence Causey, President of the Agriculture Association and Kenneth Garris, who is a vocational agriculture teacher. Visiting some relatives in CAMP LEJEUNE I saw Lieutenant Alfred Boswell convers- ing with Lonnie, now a jet pilot. Of course, I drove out to the country. Frances Cannon is happily married and Jean Stokes has quit her job to become a housekeeper, also. Nell Jackson is employed in her husband ' s business firm, Jackson ' s Merchandise. Good luck, girls! My! My! What beautiful nurses, Dawn Smith, Joyce Batchelor, and Alice Cannon — Will the patients ever get over this? They are the best! Members of the Dupont Staff are: Linwood Branch, foreman; Eugene Garris; and Carroll Grey, who is traveling around demonstrating Dupont products. Bob McCotter is drawing the blueprints to enlarge the plant. (Bob, keep your mind on your work). Hearing that Pat Stokes has entered a field in religious education is wonderful. Will she always be the same girl? It is with regret that Uncle Sam summoned Earl Braxton, Robert Reaves, Harvey Harris and Alton Stancill, especially Alton, who hated to part with his Ford. and now in 1966, as I look over these past ten years, I marvel at the success and happiness of these Seniors of 1956. MARLENE DUDLEY Prophetess History On a bright sunny morning in August of 1952 we, the 1956 Seniors of G.H.S. began our high sclioo I career. All of us were green freshmen, weadmit, but under theguidance of Mrs. Paul Brax- ton, our homeroom teacher, Mr. Tyson, our principal andall the other faculty members we pulled through. To further help us make decisions vOe elected Marlene Dudley, class president, Charles Da. I, vice-president and Pat Stokes, secretary and treasurer. As basketball season rolled around we sent many class members toaid the team. Boy! Were we proud when some of us received uni- forms. Time passed quickly and soon it was Spring and almost time for school to be out. As is the custom, we had a hay-ride followed by a weiner roast at the Charles Street Park in Greenville At commencement we were represented by marshals-Marlene Dudley and Bette McCotter. Summer vacation was short and soon we were slaving away again. This time we were silly- sophomores. Led byCharles Dail, our president, Mr. Brown, ouradviser and our brand new prin- cipal, Mr. Bright, we faced the new year. Shortly after school started, we were all sad to see Violet Potter move away. The basket-ball teams included three sophomoreson the starting line-up-Dawn Smith, Joyce K-oon, and Linwood Branch. We were still proud of our same marshals. These two girls also received additional recogni- tion - Bette, forhavingthehighestscholasticaverageand Marlene, by receiving the Home Econom- ICS Award. The followingyeartheycalled us jolly juniorsand thatwas justwhat wewere. I ' msurenone o us will ever forget Mr. Underwood, ouradviser. Our firstmajor business venture was the Junior Play. With the proceeds we dreamed of the day when we would journey to New York. The play was a three act comedy, If Mother Only Knew. Our Prom was a masterpiece of workmanship, every senior will admit. We did away with the record player and gave the seniors a real live- dance band. Our theme Moonlight and Roses- was very effective. Among the honors which were to come to members of our class, Pat Stokes and Fred Taylor received the medals for the Best-all- Round boy and girl We were all very proud of our chief-marshal, Bette McCotter as she led the seniors down the aisle because we knew that next year someone would do the same for us. It hardly seems possible but here we are at last -dignified Seniors. On us fell the responsi- bility and pride of carrying on the annual. Our staff led by the capable Marlene Dudley and Pat Stokes did a wonderful ,ob Meantime ourclass led by Fred Taylor, president and Mrs. AnnieMae Bunch, adviser, increased our treasury by holding bake sales and managing the school store. M.r I °r T °„ « parade came to be a part of our class motto as Nell h l Tka T M - William Douglas -Bill- Jackson, Bob McCotter made Faye McGlohon his bride and Mary Frances Bryan became Mrs. Cannon. .!ah .r ' ' [ banquet is over and we have received our diplomas. Many a sigh of relief and an occasional tear is visible in the eye of parents, teachers, and Seniors. in thi ' f ' ' mi ' u u ' foor-year period of our lives. We hope that if we write a history hooter of ' V iT ' ' ° ' - do. As we close this chapter of our lives may we look forward to achieving our highest ambition r BETTE McCOTTER, Historian A ' c4 e ontinuation c| Last Will and Testament We, the Senior Class of 1956, Griffon High School, do hereby state this our last will and testament.
