CLASS HISTORY We, the class of 1953, made our grand appearance in High School in August of 1949. We were slightly awed by the ways of the upper classmen; but with Mr. Venters as our advisor, we settled down to work. Almost immediately we began making contributions in the fields of sports and dramatics. Louise Corey and Hilda Buck joined the girls ' basketball team, while J.R. , Clyde, Jesse, Rufus and John played with the boys. We presented a one -act play that year called, HIGH SCHOOL DAZE . We were honored by having Hilda Buck chosen Halloween Queen. Some of our class members took a trip to the Planatarium at Chapel Hill. At Commencement of that year, John Lewis was a marshall . With these accomplishments to our credit, we tackled our Sophomore year with more confidence. We elected John Lewis president and Mr. Brown was our sponsor. We de- cided that we wanted to take a trip when we got to be seniors, so we began making money by selling sandwiches and candy at ball games. John was co-captain of the boys ' team that year. Our only social event was a hayride to Whichards Beach. We began taking our share of honors that year, too. J.R. won two medals. Music and Best All -Round . Peggy Abbott won the Home Economics Award; and John Lewis, the Sportsmanship A- ward. In the field of agriculture, John Lewis and Kenneth Branch received honors. They entered hogs in the County Swine Show and won first and second places. Our Junior year was a very busy year and a most outstanding one. We again chose John for president, and Mrs. Bradley was our sponsor. In the field of sports, several of our class members became outstanding. Hilda was captain of the girls ' basketball team, and John co-captain of the boys ' team. Hilda also became head cheerleader . J.R. won a place on the county all -tournament team, and Louise Corey received honora- ble mention. One of the most successful and enjoyable events of that year was our Ju- nior play, THE UNINVITED JESTER . We found we had some very good actors and actresses. In April, we honored the seniors with a lovely banquet around the theme, Garden of Roses . It was a great success; and too, we discovered that in our class were some beautiful girls and handsome young men. We made money that year by sel- ling drinks and candy at ball games. With our increased treasury, we began to get ex- cited over the trip, which we were planning. Our class received many honors that year. Amongthem were Hilda Buck with the Home Economics Award, Mildred Sellars, the English Award, and John Lewis, the Sportsmanship and Scholarship Awards . Mildred also won the Soil Conservation Contest at Griffon and second place in the county. Out- standing in the field of music was Mary Dawson, who sang the leading part in the Christ- mas Cantata. Mildred, J.R. and John were marshalls that year. With the ending of our Junior year, we realized we had occupied seats on the sideline at Commencement for the last time . Time moved quickly and we soon found ourselves Seniors. Mrs. Bradley was to be our advisor again. We took over the school store, which was quite a big undertaking, but which we hoped would make for us enough money for that long talked-of trip. We also decided to publish THE GRIFTONLAN , a school annual. We had very capable leaders in the editor, John Lewis, and business manager, Mildred Sellars. We had our share of royalty this year. Mary and J.R. were elected Harvest Queen and King, and Hilda Buck was chosen May Queen. Jean Daugherty was Maid of Honor and Peggy Ab- bott and Norene Snell, Senior Attendants. Our class continued to take honors in scholas- tics as well as in sports and dramatics. With the passing of the banquet, class play and our trip, we found ourselves at the climax of our high school caree r - -graduation . It is here that this History ends. From now on, each Senior will be responsible for writing his own HISTORY. John Lewis Historian
