THE SENIOR CLASS J- reienti GRIFTON HIGH SCHOOL Griflon, N.C. FOREWORD With this edition, we are beginning a new series of annuals for Grifton High School. The seniors, teachers and staff members have worked hard to make it a yearbook of highest quality. We have sought to portray the progress and advance- ment of our Alma Mater, and we hope we have preserved the priceless memories from this school year. It is our sincere desire that each succeeding senior class, with this purpose in mind, will continue the publication of The Griftonian. DEDICATION We, the Senior Class of Nineteen Hundred and Fifty Three, wish to dedicate this annual to the person, who has made our High School days the most pleasant of our lives. She has been patient and understanding; has given us know- ledge and advice that will always be a help after we have graduate d . So, with great love and respect, we now dedicate this annual to Our Beloved Teacher, MRS. HELEN BRADLEY. St HIGH SCHOOL FACULTY ALBERT F. TYSON Principal MRS. JOHN BUNCH Commerce, English MRS. GEORGE SUGG School Cafeteria Manager CLASS HISTORY We, the class of 1953, made our grand appearance in High School in August of 1949. We were slightly awed by the ways of the upper classmen; but with Mr. Venters as our advisor, we settled down to work. Almost immediately we began making contributions in the fields of sports and dramatics. Louise Corey and Hilda Buck joined the girls ' basketball team, while J.R. , Clyde, Jesse, Rufus and John played with the boys. We presented a one -act play that year called, HIGH SCHOOL DAZE . We were honored by having Hilda Buck chosen Halloween Queen. Some of our class members took a trip to the Planatarium at Chapel Hill. At Commencement of that year, John Lewis was a marshall . With these accomplishments to our credit, we tackled our Sophomore year with more confidence. We elected John Lewis president and Mr. Brown was our sponsor. We de- cided that we wanted to take a trip when we got to be seniors, so we began making money by selling sandwiches and candy at ball games. John was co-captain of the boys ' team that year. Our only social event was a hayride to Whichards Beach. We began taking our share of honors that year, too. J.R. won two medals. Music and Best All -Round . Peggy Abbott won the Home Economics Award; and John Lewis, the Sportsmanship A- ward. In the field of agriculture, John Lewis and Kenneth Branch received honors. They entered hogs in the County Swine Show and won first and second places. Our Junior year was a very busy year and a most outstanding one. We again chose John for president, and Mrs. Bradley was our sponsor. In the field of sports, several of our class members became outstanding. Hilda was captain of the girls ' basketball team, and John co-captain of the boys ' team. Hilda also became head cheerleader . J.R. won a place on the county all -tournament team, and Louise Corey received honora- ble mention. One of the most successful and enjoyable events of that year was our Ju- nior play, THE UNINVITED JESTER . We found we had some very good actors and actresses. In April, we honored the seniors with a lovely banquet around the theme, Garden of Roses . It was a great success; and too, we discovered that in our class were some beautiful girls and handsome young men. We made money that year by sel- ling drinks and candy at ball games. With our increased treasury, we began to get ex- cited over the trip, which we were planning. Our class received many honors that year. Amongthem were Hilda Buck with the Home Economics Award, Mildred Sellars, the English Award, and John Lewis, the Sportsmanship and Scholarship Awards . Mildred also won the Soil Conservation Contest at Griffon and second place in the county. Out- standing in the field of music was Mary Dawson, who sang the leading part in the Christ- mas Cantata. Mildred, J.R. and John were marshalls that year. With the ending of our Junior year, we realized we had occupied seats on the sideline at Commencement for the last time . Time moved quickly and we soon found ourselves Seniors. Mrs. Bradley was to be our advisor again. We took over the school store, which was quite a big undertaking, but which we hoped would make for us enough money for that long talked-of trip. We also decided to publish THE GRIFTONLAN , a school annual. We had very capable leaders in the editor, John Lewis, and business manager, Mildred Sellars. We had our share of royalty this year. Mary and J.R. were elected Harvest Queen and King, and Hilda Buck was chosen May Queen. Jean Daugherty was Maid of Honor and Peggy Ab- bott and Norene Snell, Senior Attendants. Our class continued to take honors in scholas- tics as well as in sports and dramatics. With the passing of the banquet, class play and our trip, we found ourselves at the climax of our high school caree r - -graduation . It is here that this History ends. From now on, each Senior will be responsible for writing his own HISTORY. THE CLASS OF 1953 PROPHECY Just for a minute let us pretend that we can see ten years in the future. Anyday now you may sit back and turn on your radio and hear the now famous comedian Rufus Craft. All you people who violate traffic rules will be chased by Patrolman Will Rod- gers Harris. If you try to dodge him you had better leave the country for Detective Jesse Stancill will be tailing you. Those of you who are always unlucky and get caught anyway will want to hire Lawyer Kenneth Branch to handle your case. What is that magnificent building I see on the outskirts of town? Why it ' s the new Grifton Hospital! There we see Hilda Buck, who is the head nurse. Two of her assistants are Clarice Edwards and Hilda Jones. While I was in town today I decided to visit the school. Two of the outstanding faculty members are J.R. Hooten and John R. Lewis. John is teaching agriculture and believe me he still raises some handsome hogs. J.R. came by and invited me over to the gym to watch the basketball boys work out. He is coaching the best team in Pitt County, and is headed for the County Championship. I also ran into Clyde Adams, who is a Senator. I didn ' t have much time to talk to him, because he had to get back to Washington for one of those swanky parties. He re is a bit of information concerning the Navy I would like to pass on to you. Jack Miller is now an Admiral, and Mattie Jones is doing a fine job as a Navy Nurse. You people who travel by air might try the Pan American Airlines. There you will receive the superb service of one of their smiling stewardesses, Jean Daugher- ty- All of the girls who are planning to enter college and like to eat, I suggest you go to W.C., for I hear the food there is out of this world . This is made possible by Peggy Abbott, Dietician. I was in New York last and I ran into Shirley Spikes. She is Power ' s highest paid Model. I also saw Mary Dawson ' s name in flashing bright lights on a Broad- way Theater. She is starring in Romeo and Juliet for its five hundredth per- formance . The next time you plan to travel, write to the San Francisco Traveling Agency for information concerning the next world tour conducted by Louise Corey. Louise Cannon is as busy as a bee in her secretarial work at Grifton ' s Dupont Plant. The local high school has grown so much that the principal needs a full time secretary. Joyce Cannon is doing that job well. Beulah Burroughs is busy restoring China as part of her task as a Christian Mis sionary . Mrs. Jesse Jackson, formerly Norine Snell, is busy keeping house for her hus- band and three sweet children. Gilbert Whaley is also busy keeping the home fires burning. He is the owner and manager of several farms. He and his wife are happily bringing up their children. Gay Dixon absolutely refuses to work so she is still enjoying her eternal vacation. I am preparing my whistle stop speeches for the next presidential campaign. You see, I plan to be the first woman president.
