Graduation is a most rewarding ending and commencement is an even more exciting beginning. These combine to make us proud and hopeful for the future-ethe tomorrows that you and I will have. UToday new-born from all my yesterdays as written in the poem TODAY by 0.8. Davis is as true today as it was yesterday, and will be as true tomorrow as it is today. UI held today in my hand and watched it untold is another line from this poem and holds much truth of what we have done over the years as this class has matured under the leadership of the faculty. the guidance of your parents, the influence of your friends, and the environment to which you have been exposed and until now you have become a most important part of our community. it is for this reason that this farewell will bring a separation of the very real and wonderful part of our lives. It is this that makes for the tears of parting as well as the joys of accomplishments. It is with real regret that I break into your thoughts of the moment with the fact of tomorrowethe tomorrow that will surely come. It is this for which you have been preparing. You have always been aware that this is only the beginning, and that sooner or later you must plan for the future. And what is your future? It becomes increasingly difficult to outline just what the future will demand. I can assure you that it will be whatever you make of itestrong with determination or weak with the failures of boredom or dependency. in your tomorrow you will need work to provide you with the necessities of life, with the fulfillment of your mental desires, and leisure time activities to keep you fresh, interested, and mentally alert. Use your time, all of it, but try to maintain that clean-cut break between work and play using both wisely. I have enjoyed being with you these past 4 years and I appreciate the opportunity to congratulate you on your achievements and wish you much success and happiness in your future endeavors. ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL Mr. D. Brogan. REFLECTIONS OF THE 1978-79 SCHOOL YEAR As the 1978-79 school year nears conclusion, I would like to take a moment to express my sincere thanks to all students, staff, and faculty for the fine support the office has received this academic year. This has been a most challenging year which has produced an ever improving quality of education here at G.l. Each and every department deserves a special word of thanks as all have tried to provide enriching educational experiences beyond just the four classroom walls. We have witnessed several successful choral, band and orchestra presentations; including the Pageant of Bands. The New York State Future Farmers of America chose Springville as the site for their successful Annual Convention. All of us have taken great pride in the accomplishments of our athletic teams. We have a most successful new school newspaper, The Zenith , sponsored by the English depart- ment. Student government has been increasingly active and productive, with its ef- forts in Student Council and the sponsoring of several dances. Many of our students have volunteered untold hours in working with our local hospital and several charitable organizations. The International Dinner sponsored by the Language department was most enjoyable. The plays, Frankenstein , Some of My Best Friends , uCastle in the Village . The Maids , and Children's Theatre, 12 Dancing Princesses were outstanding performances sponsored by the Theatre Workshop. Selected field trips have broadened our students' understanding of the world of work and provided some very realistic goals. These are but a few of the undertakings for which we are most grateful and all of us should be thankful. Also we would like to take a moment to thank all who have worked so hard to make the Springville-Griflith Institute Central School District uConduct Code work. For those of you who have generated your energies in a productive manner, your reward is great. For those who let yesterday slip by without challenge or accomplishment, I can only hope that those disappointments and failures will encourage you to try harder in the coming year wherever you may be. My best wishes go with this year's graduating class, and I look forward to an even Hbigger and better 1979-80 school year. Thank you. David M. Brogan SECRETARIES SECRETARIESeROW 1: Mrs. N. Arnold. ROW 2: Mrs. M. Hall, Mrs. C. Wohlhueter, Mrs. T. Taylor. SUPERINTENDENT Dear Seniors, Very soon you will be passing as a stu- dent through the doors of GI for the last time. You will not only be entering a new phase of your life but also, in a short time, a new decade. The 1970's had the space shuttle, Watergate, Reggie Bars, remodel- ed GI, Vietnam, disco, energy crisis, and the Grape Crush. The decade of the 1980ls is your decade. By 1989 you will be 28 with a head start on your future. Plan wisely and make the most of every day and year. William I. Mr. Robert Ingerson, one of the elementary physical education teachers passed away in October. In November, Mr. Eugene Gnann, a high school guidance counselor, died. Mr. Eugene Gnann One can't describe the sorrow. Or the aching emptiness From the death of a great person Whose life seemed so endless. Who can forget his dimpled cheeks, His crinkled eyes, His smile, His charming ways and Attitude, That made your day Worthwhile He always seemed to have a smile and tell a joke or two, To make you smile with him When days got down on you. His grin and words of Friendliness Meant quite a lot to me, And I know he'll live Forever, In all our memories. Jackie Lutz Mr. Robert Ingerson Robert Ingerson was a member of the G.I. faculty who will long be remembered for his contributions in the field of athletics. He not only taught physical education in Springville for thirty-one years, but also coached the football, basketball, baseball, and track teams for many years. His football teams were divisional champions from 1954 to 1958 and his basketball teams were Southern Erie County champions in 1946 and 1947. In 1974 Coach Ingerson was inducted into the Griffith Institute ltPop Warner Hall of Fame and was given the Erie County Interscholastic Conference Directors Award. He was also voted Teacher of the Year in the Griffith Institute and Central School District in 1968. In addition to being remembered for his many honors, Robert Ingerson will always be thought of as a man who taught good sportsmanship and fair play to all students with whom he came in contact. FACULTY N EWS Many changes took place in the Griffith Institute faculty during the 1978-1979 school year. Manchester, Secretary Class History Looking back, the Class of 1979 has many good memories . . . . . . Our Freshman Year, Marcia Blakely served as President; Carol Kellick, Vice-President; Tracy Law, Secretary; and Bob Steff, Treasurer. Our class adviser was Mrs. Salzler. The Class of 1979, like many others, experienced split sessions. Although the day was short, we manag- ed to fulfill our academic responsibilities and still en- joy ourselves. We composed our class song, chose class colors of navy and powder blue, and designed our class rings. Our first major fund-raising activity was the sale of the Griffin T-shirts. We then entered the snow sculpture contest in January, had a bake sale in May and concluded our activities with the Moving-Up Day Dance. . . . Our Sophomore Year, Kyle Sprague led us as President, Carol Kellick as Vice President, Tracy Law as Secretary and Laurel Odell as Treasurer. Mr. Kauf- mann was our adviser. That year marked the end of split sessions and a return to a full school day. Our first big event was the Christmas Ball with the theme Silent Night at which Cheile Crow was crowned Queen. Her court was com- posed of Kyle Sprague, Judy Hamm, Wende Wilke, Ellen Oatmeyer, Cathy Fiel, Carol Kellick, Rachel Spire, Brenda Edwards, Ellen Gibbin and Jill Alberico. The second semester was memorable for several events. We wili never forget the Blizzard of '77 which kept us from school for over a week. Later, we held a record sale which was very successful. May was an exciting time as we placed orders for our class rings. . . .OurJuniorYear,JeffKittle was President; Debbie Agle, Vice-President; Tracy Law, Secretary; and Cheile Crow, Treasurer. Our class adviser was Mr. Madurski. That fall of 1977 we received our rings. We spon- sored the annual Sadie Hawkins Dance with the ad- mission prices determined by selecting a heart from a fish bowl. The Junior-Senior Flag Football game was exciting with Mr. Soloman and Mr. Minogue serving as coaches. The teams played so well that the game end- ed in a scoreless tie. At the beginning of the new year a dance was held. We participated in a series of sports events among all classes which included basketball and hockey. April was a special month for it held our Junior Prom. As our theme, we chose tiDream On. Kyle Sprague was given the honor of being Queen. Members of her court were Lora Lee Rumfola, Joell ingerson, Debbie Agle, Ellen Oatmeyer, Jill Aiberico and Darlene Bristol. . . . Now that we are Seniors, Jeff Kittie is our President; Pete Orchard, Vice-President; Debbie Manchester, Secretary; and Julie Schelpfiin, Treasurer. Our class adviser is Mr. Kaufmann. Our Senior Year has been busy. The Class of 1978 wrote a Student Government Constitution and left the task of organizing a Student Council to our class as seniors. Two of our classmates serve as officers of this organization: Kyle Sprague, President, and Denise Paquin, Vice-President. Our magazine sale surpassed our saies quota, guaranteeing a free cap and gown for most class members. In October, Lynne Michaiakes was crowned our 1978-1979 Homecoming Queen. Members of her court were Dorothy Schrader, Tracy Law, Beth Gavola, Cathy Fiel, Debbie Agle, Debbie Sion, Wende Wilke, Denise Paquin and Carol Kellick. The Junior-Senior Flag Football game was held with Mr. Madurski as our coach. This year we defeated our opponents with a score of 28-0. Our Senior Prom and Graduation lie ahead. The Class of 1979 will miss the good times shared with friends here and will always remember the people who made our years enjoyable at Griffith Institute. The organization is composed of three smaller staffs: Layout, which plans the arrangement of pictures and ar- ticles; Literary, which is responsible for all writing; and Typing, which prepares the final copy. All staff members sell advertisements and yearbooks. During one week in August, Rachel Spire and Steve Smith attended a workshop sponsored by Varden Studios in Rochester for high school editors. They are kind and loving; they made me a part of their family and helped me learn and understand the Turkish way of life. The Turks are very friendly; they went out of their way to make me happy. I made many friends over the summer despite the fact that my Turkish is extremely limited. My home was on the Aegean Sea in southwestern Turkey. Life there was relaxing and easy-going: swimming in the morning, sleeping or knitting in the afternoon, going for walks or playing cards with friends in the evening, and watching television at night. The first Turkish phrase I learned was Iidoidum which means I have had enough food. The Turks believe in eating and eating and eating. I was almOst grateful when the celebration of the holy Islamic month of Ramazon began. For the thirty days of this month Moslems fast from sunrise to sunset; they wake up at three o'clock in the morning to eat breakfast and eat dinner as soon as the sun sets. Like my brother Bahadir, I observed this celebration for exact- ly one day. During the summer, I did many things that I had never done in America and discovered that most of them were not very difficult to become accustomed to. I learned how to knit and crochet. I washed all of my clothes by hand. I wore skirts in the afternoon and only wore shorts twice tas respectable Turkish girls do not wear shortst. Even though I came back to Springville several months ago I still think of my life in Turkey often. I dream of the day when I will be able to return. I have many happy memories of my A.F.S. experience and I am deeply indebted to everyone who helped make it possible for me to be an exchange student to Turkey. Sue Farner EXCHANGE STUDENTS ROW 1: I. Martinez, S. Farner ROW 2: M. Maaitah, F. Ambrosi I am Mohammad Maaitah, the A.F.S. exchange student from Jor- dan in Springville this year. I feel wonderful about my staying here. I found everything different in comparison with back home. The land, the people and all the circumstances are different, except one thing: the family circumstance. I found the pity and mercy from the parents, brothers and sisters were nearly the same. Before I came, I didn't have any idea about the American life. I never even asked anyone who had been to the U.S. about it. I came here and everything changed for me: the customs, the food, and the habits. I started a new life, the American life, and I realized how wonderful it is. I like it and I'll always like it. I am so happy that I have this opportunity and this experience. It is a good experience for me but I hate one thing. After I have my own friends here, I am going to leave them. This is hard and the worst thing for me is leaving my family here after one year of living together. I remember an Arabic proverb that says, nOne who stays in a circumstance for forty days is a member of that circumstance. How about one year? I like it here as much as I like my country. The U.S. is my second country and I'll never forget it. I'll remember it all the time: my family, my friends, and the whole country, including Springville of course. I say this because this country Is staying deep inside me. I am looking forward to coming here again and I will. In this life, everything is go- ing fast; everything is moving rapidly, especially the time. One thing will remain inside in the deepness of my heart: the memory. I will remember the days I spent here. I compare this life with a movie. We watch it and remember it later. Cordially, Mohammad Maaitah I am the exchange student from Mexico city. My name is Sylvia Ileana Martinez Jimenez. I am eighteen years old. I arrived here on November 3, 1978 and stayed here nine months. I have enjoyed this opportunity to learn the language and various American customs. The American people I have met and my family here have been very nice to me. My family always tried to treat me like I was a member of their family. In the school, all the teachers and students have helped make my stay here pleasurable. I have had many experiences that I will never forget like skiing and seeing all the beautiful places of the area. I want to thank everyone for being so good to me. Perhaps we will meet again. Hasta Luego. Su amiga Mexicana, Ileana My name is Fabian Ambrosi Ordoines. I am seventeen years old. I come from Cuenea, Ecuador. I am here for International fellowship. I lived here for nine months. I live with the Richard Spencer family on Transit Line Road, Springville. I have eleven brothers and sisters here, and one brother and one sister at home. I have had a very nice stay. The people are very nice. I have made many friends. School here Is very different in my country. There are separate schools for boys and girls. This is the first year I've spent with snow and got to do snow-involved activities, tincluding skiing and snowmobilingl. live been involved in many social activities which are much like the ones at home. The music is very different from my country. In spite of the little time I've spent here, the experiences I've had will remain in my heart always. Thanks for everything.
