She led us towards goals of physical development and helped us achieve a fuller understanding of school spirit. She unselfishly gave herself to the students of G.l. in numerous activities and sports which include, ad- vising a spirited cheerleading squad, organizing successful water shows, and coaching girls’ synchronized swimming. As a person— she is witty, humorous, open-minded, and has encouraged us in all our endeavors. As a teacher— she takes interest in each of her students and is well-versed in her field. And so, for these reasons, we take great pride in dedicating the 1971 Griffonell to 10 Mrs. Cheryl Schrader, and express to her our deep thanks. % n FACULTY Shadows cast upon the sidewalk Shadows changing form as the SUN commands Shadows 1 0 n n g a e shorter r 0 wider e r Shadows gray paths of d s o i t r e td reality. 12 THIS PAGE SPONSORED BY Springville Dry Cleaners 31 East Main Street Springville • • • • _ t i« :v r r« •. „ ■ ! i s . ■ •.■ Vjr ? r , ?V- ' ' W''r' J ■ w AS‘. k: - - I - ; ? 1 ' -'• ; .v '■• 'W • f 'Wv ‘ a'v ,, . •. . ‘ . • r -. • • • . - . We, your teach- ers, have worked with you to help prepare you for life. We have opened doors for you in the arts, sciences, humanities, and communications skills. With your parents, we have also shown great interest in the de- velopment of strong and desir- able character traits. You needn’t be told of the many problems you will face in the years ahead, for you are liv- ing in a period of conflicting ide- ologies. We see you as the bright hope of the future and wish you well in meeting the chal- lenge of the times. Take pride in your work. Be inquisitive and curious. Be en- thusiastic and perseverent. Be systematic and thorough. Give your best to the task at hand and be all that you’re capable of being. Best wishes for the future, Frank C. Schmidt ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL Mr. Swartz M ADMINISTRATION SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS Roads seldom are in themselves man’s des- tination but rather are the means of reaching his destination. During the course of a lifetime each of us travels a number of roads, symbolic of the numer- ous challenges and decisions facing us as individ- uals. Each road has a purpose and a reason for being—whether hazardous, or uncomfortable, or pleasant. Perhaps the road was necessary for commerce and eventual success, or convenience, or more direct communication with family and friends, or perhaps it was simply an expedient way of getting somewhere. Some roads are rich in history and some are new and improved . Many times the “wide road is more popular and easier for travel, but the “nar- row road may provide more satisfaction even though it has fewer travelers and perhaps is more difficult to travel. For each of you tomorrow’s road lies ahead—may it be a combination of an open highway, a country lane, and even an occasional one-way street. Godspeed! Mr. Edward J. Our class was united into a single force by our successful candy sale and the traditional Moving-Up Day Dance. As Sophomores, under Martha Meade’s leadership, we donated to AFS Club and the Tele- thon. Our Candle Sale proved to be a great success. We held our Noel Ball, with Charlene Rehrauer as Queen, in the High School Foyer. We were also very active in our Junior Year. With Dave Cooke as our President, we launched the Christmas Card Sale. We held the traditional Sadie Hawkins Day Dance and our Junior Prom. Gretchen Gundlach reigned as Prom Queen. Now we’re Seniors, led by Marcia DeLisle. With our Magazine Sale over, we’re looking forward to Graduation, the Senior Prom, and the many roads ahead. 35 Christina Adams Kim Adanti Donald Altmann 34 Gary Anderson James Anderson Deborah Ball Philip Barie Janet Barthel Thomas Beam Joan Belscher Robert Bishop Marilyn Blumenstein 37 Wayne Bobseine Craig Bobseine Gregory Bock Rosemarie Bremiller Susan Bolton Patrick Brown 38 John Cooper 39 David Cook Robert Craft Daniel Cotter Carol Crump I Elaine Crosby 40 Pamela Curry Kenneth Decker Marcia DeLisle Rosemarie DiBlasi IP Mary Jo DiBlasi 41 Christine Dygula Valerie Dziak Cynthia Eaton Barbara Edwards Kathy Emerling Louise Empringham Gayle Failey Robert Farner Mary Lee Feldman Susan Feldman 44 Elaine Feltz William Francis Rhonda Frantz Paul Gallati Rebecca Feltz Sally Feltz Barbara Fisher Ann Fleckenstein Alex Gnann Charles Golabek Thomas Gately Gail Gelser Elaine Golabek A Gretchen Gundlach Thomas Goodemote Cheryl Green Owen Gould Daniel Grigsby Charles Gunsher 48 Kathleen Hesse Jack Holnbeck Dale Howard Linda Huber Gary Hunchar 49 Kevin Hesse Sheryl Hofmann Richard Jablonski Douglas Jensen Robert Johnson V y Mary Hunter Diane Johnson f Debra Hutchinson i Jean Kestner Terry Killinger Jane Klaiber Brenda Knopf Dorothy Kondziela Jay Kita •«cr- r Lawrence Kotlarsz Victoria Krezmien Mary Kropczynski Gary Kraus Cathryn Kota Audry Krezmien Mary Beth Kuhn Mary Koningisor Jacqueline Lake Lloyd Lamb Leland Lamoreaux Diane Lango James Lambert Donald Langreck Raymond Laurie Thomas Lightcap Wanda Lowe Terry Law Paul Lawrence Michael McClelland Barbara McClelland Anne Manchester Lynda McCarthy Jody Penfold Darryl Palen James Piscitelli Phyllis Peters Clifford Penke Rudolph Ploetz Allen Rauch Philip Porter Kathy Randall Michael Rafter Barbara Proctor Will Potter Shirl Raber Charlene Rehrauer Stephen Reynolds Lawrence Rood 62 Daniel Saunders Michael Schroeder Paul Seymour Deborah Simmons Andrew Sheret Cheryl Slaughenhaupt 63 Susan Sion Beth Slating Anthony Smith Patricia Smith Nancy Smith Daniel Smith Richard B. For elev- en weeks during the summer of 1970, I was lucky enough to call Roxas City, the Republic of the Philippines, my home, and a beautiful, warm, friendly family of Filipinos my family. The idea of becoming a Filipino, of seeing the world for a brief moment from an Asian per- spective, is one that I will cher- ish forever. Someone once said that the trouble with people is that they build walls instead of bridges. AFS is one bridge that will never cease to serve the cause of international friend- ship. Phil Barie “Walk together, talk togeth- er, o ye people of the Earth. Then, and only then, shall ye have peace.” 74 Gladys Nyapidi I still remember when I first came. I felt like everything remains the same: No difference in people, they're so kind, filled in their faces with such a warm smile. I’m so impressed with these wonderful students: so friendly, so fantastic in their workout. I will never forget these such mo- ments. To remember all of you, who are going to succeed with no doubt. First day of school, teach- ers showed students that it is absolutely demo- cratic to fight for their rights by a peaceful demonstration. To show that they’re important not antique. Be proud of Springville, the perfect AFS town. Halfway around the world, they send you goodwill toward men who sing a sacred song. I’m glad to have such a chance with the Griffins. Noppadon Wechsawat I am glad of having this opportunity of jotting in this book. I really feel that AFS has given me this great opportunity to learn from various people in this community. It has been great pleasure to live in such a wonderful community Springville is, where people are so friendly that I had not come to. G.l. school is just marvelous: whenever I needed help there was someone around eventually to give me some without me lingering about. From there this judges that, it is the best time of all I have experienced. And I have really loved it. Let me hope that you will come to my country, I will try my best to do as much as you've done for me. Really come, come and see those wonderful animals. Come one, come all, Uganda will warmly welcome you. 75 Gladys Nyapidi SENIOR POLL MOST MUSICAL: Paul Seymour, Mary Koningisor MOST LIKELY TO SUCCEED: Beth Slating, Jay Kita MOST ARTISTIC: Liz Vacanti, Jack Holn- beck MOST STUDIOUS: Sally Feltz, Owen Gould 78 w ■■ CLASS INDIVIDUALIST: Heidi Wiltse, John Toth 79 MOST SCHOOL SPIRIT: Nick Stu- art, Cyndi Moritz T MOST ATHLETIC: Sue Feld- man, Steve Reynolds SENIOR DIRECTORY Kim Elizabeth Adanti—Major Math. BOUND Vocational Education became important to G.l. this year. For the first year thirty-one students are taking advantage of the Board of Cooperative Educational Services program. Students in these programs are trained for a job when they graduate from high school. A half day at the cen- ter is spent learning a worthwhile vocation and employment is within reach after graduation. The same type of education after high school would cost a student about two thousand dollars. The B.O.C.E.S. program offers three credits each year and students are still a member of the G.l. student body, taking English, Social Studies and Gym here. Tenth grade students who do not plan to attend college should seriously consider learning a vocation. B.O.C.E.S. Ag. students attend G.l. in a program which has over 100 students in different fields of agriculture. Ag. students are not included in the pictures.
