Theyare of the man who holds a special place in the hearts of the mem- bers of the class of 1968. Too many times we trudged to his office, but he was always a willing listener, and we left with advice we will remember. He has been a loyal class worker. A few of us remember the long after-school hours he spent during the magazine sale. We know him as a guidance counselor, driver education teacher, class advisor, basketball coach, and above all else, a friend. To you, Mr. Robert Kaufmann, we dedicate this 1968 Griffonell. 5 YOUR YEARBOOK Editor in Chief Debby Wilson Above: Bill Little, Student Photographer. PROUDLY PRESENTS THE 1968 GRIFFONELL FACULTY AND ADMINISTRATION Mr. Edward J. Sakowski became Griffith Institute's first Superintendent of Schools on July 1, 1967. A former district principal of Lyndonville Cen- tral School, Mr. Sakowski has brought to his new position a broad background of experience as an elementary school teacher and principal, and as an as- sistant superintendent of schools in Wyoming County, in addition to his district principalship. He holds a B.A. from Houghton College with o major in Social Studies, an M.S. in Education from State University College at Buffalo and St. Bona- venture University, Olean. During the fall of 1967 Mr. Sakowski participated in o European Seminar of Comparative Education which visited schools in Yugoslavia, Greece, U.S.S.R., Poland and East Germany. In his former position he was actively involved with Lions Club, Boy Scouts, 4-H, AFS, and various church organizations. Mr. and Mrs. Sakowski have three children. Mark and Janine are present- ly seniors in Attica Central School, and Jonathan attends junior high school in the same district. The family looks forward to moving to Springville at the conclusion of this school year. SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS 10 Mr. Frederic Fineour, our Assistant Superintendent of Schools, holds a B.S. degree from Hamilton College and a Masters degree from Cor- nell University. He came to Springville as a science teacher in 1927, and in 1931 became principal of Collins Center School. In 1952 Mr. Fineour became Supervisor of our elementary schools in the central district. He has watched Springville evolve from a one building school system into one of the largest independentdistrictsin Western New York. Mr. Fineour's wife, Esther, is the senior high school nurse and at- tendance officer. They have three children. Reflections from the Lyle G. Palmer Auditorum Lyle G. Palmer Lyle G. Palmer. What is G? The name it stands for Is left to me. It could be Gregory: A common name For a person of Such revered fame Is it Geoffrey? A distinguished name For the face within That picture frame. George is likely, Yes, it must be The middle name Of Lyle G. THE BOARD OF EDUCATION Above: Mr. Le Roy Williams (Business Manager) Mr. Jack Ballantyne Mr. Charles Decker Mr. Richard Solak Mr. Stanley Wallace (President) Mr. Fred Agle Dr. Roland Whitehead Mr. Edward Sakowski (Superintendent of Schools) Seated: Mrs. Marie Seider Mrs. Morgaretha Lawrence (Clerk) Right: Mr. Swartz and Mr. Devitt at work in the main office. The time has arrived for a parting of the ways; for the graduates to start on their in- dividual paths toward fulfillments of their own goals. All education experiences you parti- cipated in, either curricular or extra-curricular, were designed to assist your progress along this path. As you encounter difficulties you would be well reminded to weigh all evidence before you form an opinion regarding any one thing or one individual. Remember to set realistic goals, to meet all problems directly, and keep us informed or your progress. Congratulations. 12 THESE GUIDE SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL PRINCIPAL ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL Just as the success of all organiza- tions is based upon the quality of their leaders, so the successful operation of Griffith Institute Senior High School as an educational enterprise is largely dependent on our princi- pal, Mr. William Devitt, and our assistant principal, Mr. Richard Swartz. As administrators confront- ing the multitudinous problems of today's world, they encourage the development of self-discipline on the part of the student body, under the guidance of the faculty. Mr. Devitt and Mr. Swartz are actively knowl- edgeable concerning the total opera- tion of the school ond all its activi- ties, and are ever willing to be of service to both students and faculty. Their example, encouragement, and leadership are an inspiration. I'm eighteen today. (a lew years behind me and a few ahead); When I look back I see it; When I look forward I can't. Won't you help me tomorrow? (It's as if I'm unconscious of who I am and where the door will open to me). Ah, it's coming clearer, Yet I see not much. This key to my diary. (yet to be filled with events on ahead, and questions in my head to be answered); Shall I do or not do? Is it right or maybe wrong? Take life or let live? Construct or Destruet? Love or hate? Where do I turn or hide from all this? Please, help me understand. SMITH The class of 1968 is deeply honored to dedicate this page to the memory of Mrs. Eleanor Murray Smith. During her teaching career Mrs. Smith contributed sig- nificantly to her students. As a Home Economics teacher, she competently guided and influenced them in her quiet, gentle manner, making them better qualified to contribute to their world. Her dignity and pleasant disposition were worthy of imitation. As a compassionate human being she was ever present to listen to the problems of students, always having interest and understanding. Mrs. Smith will be remembered and admired as the hu- mane, serene teacher that she was, by all those who knew her at Griffith Institute. 25 PERSONNEL Top to Bottom Secretary to Superintendent, Hilde Rothfuss Business Administration Lynette Kester, Elizabeth Zurbrick, Blanche M. Lift the chorus, speed it onward Loud our praises cry Hail to thee our Alma Mater Hail oh hail G.l. As we walk the halls of G.l. Wisdom to pursue Friends forever, strive together Always to be true. SENIOR HISTORY 1964- 1965 President Jeff Bock, the boy with the golden horn, led the new freshmen into a flurry of stationery soles and record hops, as we worked toward our senior goal--a trip to Washington, D.C. We were the first freshman class to use the new addition to the school, including the audi- torium. We were young and eager for the years ahead. 1965- 1966 We had a sweat shirt sale, not for lack of clothes, but rather, to show our increasing pride in G.l. Our sophomore prom, the Yuletide Ball , was a success. Held in the gym, the decorations followed the theme of an old-fashioned Christmas. President Kent Hesse smiled. 1966- 1967 We were finally upperclassmen. It was a big year for G.l. sports as many of our classmates helped G.l. to capture the E.C.I.C. Division III Basketball Champion- ship, the Swimming Co-championship, and the Baseball Sectional Championship. In the history department, Mr. Hutchinson spun many tales on the belated Virginia Field Trip. Our Junior Prom, Love Makes the World Go 'Round was a festive occasion, held in the Elementary School. On a warm summer night, we danced by the Eifel Tower, Ninth: President Jeffrey Bock, Vice- President Brian Huckle, Treasurer Gary Blakely, Secretary Candace Matteson. Tenth: President Kent Hesse, Vice- President Steve Heina, Treasurer Gary Blakely, Secretary Candace Matteson. Eleventh: President Brian Huckle, Vice-President Steve Heinz, Trea- surer Gary Blakely, Secretary April Spas. Former Class Officers Niagara Falls, a Chinese pagoda, and a romantic wishing well. Led by Brian Huckle, the world truly did go round for us as we approached our senior year. 1967-1968 We are seniors at last. Brian Huckle is again class president, in this, the busiest year of all. Bruce Huckle is Student Council President, and together they led us into a prosperous year. The year whirls by with many events-the Junior-Senior play, Lily the Felon's Daughter (a morbidly funny melodrama), the Washington trip (for which we have sold magazines, held candy sales, collected dues, etc., for the past four years), the Senior Ball, and of course, Graduation. It's our final year of high school; some of us are glad, others rather sentimental and re- luctant to leave. But we are looking forward to the future, and the guidance office has become a main gathering spot, as Mr. Brown and Mr. Kaufmann help uschoose our careers and colleges. We could not have reached this stage in our education without the dedication of our teachers. We would like to thank you. We have survived our four years of high school, and we look ahead to the future, but we will always look behind us too, to our memories of G.l. 31 Magazine Sale 32 Christine Anzalone Brenda Blakely Gary T. AMERICAN FIELD SERVICE W would like to welcome Morto Susan Fernandez, from Argentina. Rey and Sue. Through this book, I want to give to this nice school and its students, and my Americon family, Mr. and Mrs. Moritz, thanks for the wonderful time I have had here. It is very interesting to live with American people, because in that way we learn and understand more, about you, your society, your schools, your young people. Our aspiration is: Walk together, talk together O ye people of the earth Then and only then Shall ye have Peace. And I think with your generosity we will make it. Susan, from Argentina 68 STUDENTS It is a great pleasure to me to have this opportunity of visiting your progressive country. I like the A.F.S. idea, visiting on-the-spot and getting acquainted with the mentality and the morals of the people of the United States. Previously I read about the United States, and now I have experienced the United States. I would like to exchange this opportunity and have you visit my country, Iran, if only for the moment; through my ideas about modern Iran. What is Iran like today? Modern Iran has been built on the base of Ancient Persia. Beyond Modern Iran you will find the ideas of the ancients. The present monarch has advanced the peoples of Iran tre- mendously in the last 20 years. The following has been accom- plished; 1. Illiteracy has almost been erased through the army of Education. 2. For the first time peasants have been gronted land own- ership through distribution of Royal land holdings. 3. The oil industry ranks about 5th in world production. 4. As the same time, Iran continues the ancient traditions in handicraft and rugs. We have a word in my country, s , to have like someone as a guest, and to entertain in the best manner. Our people think that to do this is to achieve the best as a person. This idea is not different in the United States. I have found myself welcome in each family and also at school and every- where else during my stay. I want to extend the same kind of welcome to anyone who will visit Iran. I hope that someday I can truly welcome any of the friends that I have made in the United States. Rey Tehrani Iran We would like to welcome Mohammodrezo Bavofatehrani from Iron. Lucy Cairns, was the 1967 G.l. A.F.S. candidate, selected by a Springville committee, and then a simi-finalist in New York City. And I have seen dust from the walls of institutions, Finer than flour, alive, more dangerous than silica, Sift, almost invisible, through long afternoons of tedium, Dripping a fine film in nails and delicate eyebrows, Glazing the pale hair, the duplicate gray standard faces. -Theodore Roethke CLASSES HISTORY ECONOMICS Economic principles ore applied in deciding when, how and to what degree one should support or modify market behavior in a basically free enterprise economy. — CLASS IN THE AUDITORIUM AMERICAN HISTORY 94 ENGLISH READING Where students can make a special, independent effort to overcome their problems in reading. I wonder how many times I have written English at the top of a paper along with my name? I don't suppose I am another Shakespeare or Longfellow, but I think the sum total of four years of effort shows a bit more thought and style, a little more insight and logic, gained from my experiences in English class. The library at 3:25 P.M. 95 MATH The trouble with Math is that it requires a logical mind! The fascinating and intriguing game of numbers. He that teaches is a teacher. He that teaches Math is a miracle worker! 96 LATIN The aim of this course is the mastery of elements of the language through literature, history, and reading skills. We begin to understand not only the French language, but the people as well. We pre- pare ourselves for a richer future through the study of the past. Keys to Cultural Heritage and International Understanding. FRENCH Como estd usted? Muy bien, y tu? Que fue ese destello? SPANISH DRAWING AND PAINTING Drawing and painting class uses a vari- ety of artistic material and a wide selec- tion of subjects. ARTS AND CRAFTS This class requires a creative mind to work with challenging materials. MECHANICAL DRAWING In mechanical drawing one studies the reason for in- dustrial convention throughout the engineering field. 98 In physics class one learns through the study of energy as found in nature. Chemistry is more than learning the gas laws or what the 106 little symbols on the atomic chart represent. Science is an integral part of our lives, and chemistry relates the mystery of the structure of life to our everyday oc- curences. Biology is the study of life at the various levels of organization. 99 BUSINESS CLASSES TYPING To every secretary, the most important skill to learn is the mastery of the typewriter keyboard. SHORTHAND SALES Sales class is a study of the basic factors which moti- vate people to buy. The student learns how to apply these factors to selling on any level. 100 GYM CLASS Cold mornings the thick dew Flower children rolling in the grass. (So where's the grass?) 101 Fitness through Activity THEATER WORK SHOP A select group (or self-discovery through dramatics, in Theater Workshop. HOME ECONOMICS A place to learn the basics of living and the rudiments of human nature, geared to the present time. 102 If Mr. Seales slams on the brakes once more while I'm on ice, I'll go right through that windshield! Learning processes indeed! DRIVER'S EDUCATION 103 AG SHOP CROPS AND LIVESTOCK The emphasis in the Ag Shop is on the selection, adjustment and repair of field machinery and barn equipment. Students in Crops and Livestockstudy on livestock and crop production from the viewpoint of the worker who handles feed, seed fertilizer and chemicals used on farms. 104 AGRICULTURE TRANSPORTATION SHOP This course provides excellent opportunities for the development of problem solving abilities while working with tools, materials and processes related to power development and its control. WOOD SHOP The student of industrial arts as a future consumer becomes familiar with the many and varied uses of wood. He learns the properties of wood, wood classifications, uses of wood, furniture design and constructs, |Oinery, wood finishing, machine woodworking, and small house construction. HORTICULTURE The problems of soil, water, fertilization, environmental control, insects and disease, along with the economics of production and marketing are studied from the view of the commercial businessman in the field of horti- culture. 105 Row 5: G. Select Chorus is 'select' on the basis of interest and cooperation. Our chorus is a cross section of all the students in school. Conflicting interests and various limitations are overcome by getting involved in music. This involvment expands the interest and capabilities of all the participants. A greater understanding of self, others, and music results from our group efforts. Right Page Top Row. E. King, M. Gotely, S. Weismontel, T. Blakely, M. Agle, W. Miller, I. Smith, J. Jirok. M.
