Text from Pages 1 - 112 of the 1961 volume:

i. ; We, the graduating class of 1961, take this opportunity to express our gratitude to you, Mr. Gonzalez, for your support and enthusiastic guidance. Had it not been for your efforts, our class never would have succeeded in attaining its goals. Despite the fact you have left our school, we still remember you and your strong interest in the class as a whole and in its indi- vidual members as well. The Stoff discusses dedication with Mr. Gonzalez. Mr. Gonzalez returns to thank the Senior class for dedicating the Griffonell to him. He is shown here speaking as our guest at a recent class meeting. We the Senior class also wish to express our thanks to you. Miss O'Toole and Mr. Brown, for your ceaseless efforts without which we would never have been able to suc- ceed. So to you we issue a sincere thanks. Miss Anne O'Toole While we are expressing our gratitude to those who have helped us most, it is only fitting to mention you — Our Parents — without whom none of us would be in a position to speak now. About seventeen years ago you became our first teachers, and laid the groundwork for everything we have accomplished since. You followed us through elementary school, and were always around to fix torn knees and broken hearts. When we entered the Junior High you were still standing at the sidelines. Things must have seemed pretty hopeless when we en- tered high school with the idea that we knew more than any adult. Some of us, however, are beginning to re- alize how much parents can learn in nearly four years. Of course you have been watching us grow up and silently let us think we were way ahead of you from the beginning Your understanding must have required terrific patience. In addition, you have given us much visible support. You have supplied goods for candy and baked goods sales by mass production. You have pro- Mr. Alfred Brown vided a market for our basketball pencils, Springville pins, stationery, play tickets, Christmas cards, and maga- zines. You have patronized our sports activities, theatri- cal productions and concerts, chaperoned our dances, and allowed us to have parties and gatherings in your homes. Certainly all of us have known thankful relief when you have repeatedly helped us out of the traditional financial rut familiar to all teens. You've always been able to solve almost every problem because you cer- tainly know us better than any teacher. Even when our problems couldn't be solved, you helped us to ac- cept disappointments intelligently. And now that we are about to face life alone for the first time, we — the Senior Class of 1961 — would like you to hear our sentiments. We sincerely think you've helped us most and we love you for it. May God give you every blessing you deserve. CLASS HISTORY As 1961 quickly approaches, the Senior Class can look back over four wonderful years at Griffith Institute. It was during our Freshman year that we began working for our Washington trip under the leadership of Ronald Neureuther as president. Our Sophomore year began with the annual Vic- tory Dance to honor the football team, and was soon followed by the Sadie Hawkins Dance. The holiday season was enhanced by our Christmas Ball, Winter Wonderland, which was presided over by queen, Camie Seider. The finishing touches were put on this eventful year with the Sophomore Plays. At last, we were Juniors, and still working hard. One of the highlights of this year was getting our class rings, something we had looked forward to for the last two years. Our major fund-raising project was the Christmas Card Sale. We also sponsored the Harvest Dance and the Junior Play, Thunder on Sycamore Street. Finally, at our long awaited Junior Prom, ''April in Paris, couples danced in the beautiful setting of a Parisian street-side cafe, and Judy Klosin was chosen as our queen. This year, as Seniors, Richard Johnson took over the presidency after Ronald Neureuther, who had served us capably for the past three years. Now we have nearly accomplished the task set before us four years ago. Our magazine sale, dances, and Senior Halloween Car- nival have assured us of our anticipated trip to Wash- ington and a year full of the happiest of memories. With our obstacles overcome, and our goals reached, we now look on to further quests, and say farewell to our Alma Mater, Griffith Institute. It has a population of 70,000 and is about 70 miles north of Tokyo. In my family there are six people: my father and mother, two brothers, Kyoichi and Koji, my grand- mother and I. Both my parents are teachers. My father teaches mathematics in the high school and my mother teaches music in the junior high school. I attend the Sano Girls' High School and am study- ing to become a journalist. I like to do many things but I especially enjoy taking pictures and playing the Koto — a Japanese stringed instrument. I enjoy the United States and it is a wonderful place in which to live, but I hope that all my new friends will come to visit me some day in Japan. Above: Ploying the Koto. EXCHANGE STUDENT FROM JAPAN- JUNKO SASAKI In the latter part of May I received word that I was to spend a summer in Denmark as G.I.'s Exchange Stu- dent. What only a few months before seemed to be an impossibilty was now a reality. In June our party of around 900 students left Mont- real sailing into the Atlantic aboard the M s Seven Seas. We spent nine days on the ship and everyone agreed he had never had a more wonderful time. When we reached Rotterdam, the Scandinavian students boarded a train and I met my Danish family two days later. They picked me up at the train station and we went home to have beer and rye bread for lunch. I can't say as I have ever been so warmly greeted as I was at the home of my Danish family, Herr and Frau Mortensen, Tove, Jens Ove, Martin, and Vagner. We spent a lot of time together hunting, fishing, and working on the farm. To complete the summer I was given a party by Lise Sauer, one of our former ex- change students. Each Halloween for the last five years, the windows of downtown Springfield have been covered with signs of Halloween — witches, ghosts, and goblins. The students of the Junior and Senior High Schools had a day to execute their painting techniques as the clear windows were transformed to tho grotesque shapes and humorous characters which constitute the season of Halloween. The Student Council sponsors this project and judges consist of local citizens and merchants interested in art. Both Junior and Senior high schools compete with more than one hundred pupils participat- ing. First Prize went to John Minerd from the art category. First prize from the activity category went to Judy Moehring, Carol Rumfola, and Ruth Bates. A group of students felt a need for better organization and more school spirit at athletic contests. The result of this need was the “Gl Pep Club”. The club meets each Tuesday and Thursday after school, works along with the Cheerleaders to learn new cheers, makes victory banners and posters to aid in the organization of spec- tators at athletic events. The quality of leadership, cheerleading, and school spirit centers around this fine organization. The Gl ski club is in its second year of operation and has grown to include 68 boys and girls in grades 9-12. The club travels to Glenwood Acres each Thurs- day from 3:00-5:30 P.M. for lessons under qualified ski instructors. This year’s club is under the supervision of Mr. Sharpe. Springville is fortunate to be in a fine ski area with Glenwood, Kissing Bridge, and Holiday Valley all nearby. The purpose of the activity is to provide students the opportunity to learn ski techniques and skills so that they may have a wholesome outdoor recreational activity for after school hours. This recreational activity will also provide many people with leisure time recreation as adults. Row One. S. Stojanovieh, S. Kraft, P. Simon, D. Meehan, J. Burney, L. Fuller, N. Riley, D. Stead M.
