Tiz 960 GRIFFONELL Volume XX Published by the Senior Class of 1960 Griffith Institute and Central School Springville, New York In our area, we are all very much aware of the change in the seasons. They play an important part in our activities and sports. Our academic schedule is sometimes upset by the seasons. It is not uncommon in the winter to have a school day off due to a bad snowstorm nor is it uncommon to have one of the hottest weeks of the summer the week of June exams. Even at home we are aware of the seasons. We no more than finish the back-breaking job of shoveling snow, than we start in with another, that being mowing the lawn. It is with these thoughts in mind that we planned the year- book this year, in accordance with the seasons. DEDICATION MR. SAWIN, the 1960 Griffonell is yours. The Senior Class would like to express their appreciation for your enthusiastic guidance. We are, of course, guided by all the faculty and staff of G. I. — but to the one who constantly keeps us on our toes, we dedicate this book. ■Jm CONTENTS Dedication 2 Golf 32 Contents 3 Track 33 Principals, Board of Education 4 Tennis 34 Student Council, Student Court 5 Wrestling, Bowling 35 Senior High Faculty 6 Sponsors 36 Junior High Faculty 7 Seventh Grade 38, 39 High School Personnel 8 Eighth Grade 40, 41 Band 10, 11 Freshman Class 42, 43 Future Farmers 12 Sophomore Class 44, 45 Chorus, Science Club 13 Junior Class 46, 47 Future Nurses, Orchestra 14 Seventh Eighth Grade Snaps 48 Pencil Box, Tri-Hi-Y 15 Nine-Twelve Snaps 49 Radio, Boys' Chorus, Ski Club 16 Halloween Window Painting 50 Red Cross, Reflector 17 Senior Signatures 52 Audio-Visual Club, Thespians, Camera Club 18 Senior Class History, Junior Prom 53 Library Club, French Latin Clubs 19 Exchange Student to Belgium 54 Honor Societies 20 Exchange Student from Finland 55 Senior Award Winners 21 Senior Poll 56, 57 Boys' Girls' State 22 Junior Senior Plays 58, 59 Varsity Football 24, 25 Senior Carnival 60 Cheerleaders 26 Senior Honor Rolls 61 J. BOYS-GIRLS STATE Each year the American Legion chooses nearly 1000 boys from all over New York State and sponsors them for a week at Colgate University. The outstanding Junior boy or boys are chosen to represent their various schools. At Boys7 State they elect the whole New York State Government and then put it into operation. Our representative from G.l. this year was Moe Kessler, president of his class. Moe was elected to various offices, among them are: Judge of Municipal Court and District Attorney of his County. He was also voted outstanding boy in his county. Boys7 State is an experience well worth working for and one never to be forgotten. Each year an outstanding Junior girl is chosen by the Graduation Committee to attend Girls' State, which is sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary. She must write a letter stating her qualifications and is chosen on this basis plus her leadership ability, her character, scholarship and service to the school, commun- ity, and church. This year Judy Johnson was chosen to represent G.l. at New Paltz College, where Empire Girls' State is held. She lived for nine days with 274 other Junior girls from all over the state. The purpose of Girls' State is to awaken and instill in each girl the desire to participate in her gov- ernment. Everyone is given a chance to volunteer for various panel discussions and debates. As you see the girls you begin to pick the leaders, the ones for the offices. Every day is jammed with lectures, rallies, fun and terrific food. We learn the fundamentals of our government by taking an active part in it. In this Junior High School three hundred fifty of us work hard and have fun. During elementary school days our class members attended school in Springville, Boston, Colden, and Collins Center, but when we entered the seventh grade we finally met to form a real class, made many new friends, and began to work together on class projects as an organized unit. Peter Jax and Michael Hesse, the capable presidents of eighth and seventh grades, are ably assisted by vice-presidents Faye Deck and Robert Shutts. Secretaries Elaine Benkelman and Diane Fairdoth accurately record the minutes of the class meetings. CAFETERIA STAFF: Mrs. Joslin. Mrs. DeVinney, Mrs. Honson, Mrs. Wilson, Mrs. Bond. The bank balances that are recorded in our treasurers' books prove that this statement is true. Jane Berney and Rosemary Reiser are the faithful guardians of the class funds accumulated through dues, food sales at home football games, corsage sales during the Christmas season, and candy, pencil, and book cover sales. We have made a good start toward accumulating the necessary money for our Washington trips, as well as having learned to work together successfully in a common cause. (Continued on page 40.) In June, 1959, Joy Ingerson was chosen to receive the Pop Warner Award which gave him the opportunity to participate, with nineteen other boys from different sections of the United States, in the Pop Warner Pilgrimage. This award is based on athletic ability, scholarship, and good citizenship. The twenty boys spent a week touring Philadelphia, New York City, Atlantic City, and Valley Forge. This honor that Joy received is especially significant since Springville, New York, is Pop Warner's home town. The Junior High is very proud of its record of accomplishments. We are now looking forward to the time when we will have a new building with better facilities for work and recreation. GRADE Row One, Left to Right: L. Green, J. Barr, D. Knight, D. Some of our successful ventures have been the hot dog sale at the football games and the sales of emblems and corsages during the Christmas season last year. We have also had candy and pencil sales. The money we earn, we hope will be used for the trip to Washington in our Senior year. JUNIOR As Freshmen, under Ronald Neureuther's leadership, our class sold stationery and basketball pencils. The year was topped off by our first dance, the Freshman Street Dance. Last year, as Sophomores, we had one of our most profitable years. Everything we attempted, from the Sadie Hawkins Dance to the Sophomore Plays, proved to be extremely successful, but certainly the highlight of the year was our Christmas Ball, Winter Wonderland. r Row One, Left to Right: R. Second prize. Seventh grade, went to Linda Bickel and Donna Barthel. V u CLASS HISTORY As we started out four years ago, we thought that we would never be Seniors. These past four years have simply flown by. When we were freshmen we had our first dance. This was one of the many our class would put on for our goal, Washington. Our class had able leaders: Don Feuz, Dave Fleckenstein, Sylvia Evans, and Charlie Whitmer. The Snake Dance started off our Sophomore year. It was given to honor our football team's victory. Next came the Sadie Hawkins Dance, where Wolf Gal tried to catch Lil Abner but was beaten by Daisy Mae. During the holidays came the Christmas Ball, Silver Starlight. Our last dance was a Patch Hop. Each girl asked her favorite guy and waited on him for a week. The year was sprinkled with the usual candy and bake goods sales. Different officers were elected for our Junior year. Our new president was Moe Kessler, Vice-President Claudette Spas, Secretary Judy Johnson and again as Treasurer Charles Whitmer. This year was to be the best so far, for we obtained our class rings. The Junior Prom, Setsu Gekka , put the finishing touches on another year. Our prom was terrific. A beautiful Japanese bridge over a lily pond was the center of attraction. The throne was a shimmering pagoda. Thus far our Senior year has been the busiest. In October came our Senior Play, our Magazine Sale, a record hop and the Halloween Carnival. The class officers remained the same except Carolyn Ellis is our new Vice- President. We are all looking forward to the Washington trip during Easter Vacation. Our Senior Prom will be the end to four fun filled years at G.l. JUNIOR PROM SETSU GEKKA Queen Betsy Devonshire and her escort Hal Clark. Attendants, Left to Right: Linda Reiser, Elizabeth Rogers, Florence Hunt, Judy Heath, Lenor Filipink, Carolyn Ellis, Donnalee Blesy, Claudette Spas. EXCHANGE STUDENT TO BELGIUM QUi. Everyone aspires to a European trip. When the opportunity for such a trip was offered at our school, I took it. After I applied, I thought I had no chance against the other contestants, but I never gave up hope. Then, after several formalities such as: applications, interviews and compositions had been completed, I was announced the lucky winner. I stayed in Belgium for two and a half months. How did I get there? I flew to Canada, then to Iceland and landed in Amsterdam. I stayed in Brussels with the Denies family. The family consisted of my parents, Nicky 17, and Claudine 20. My father worked as a supervisor at the National Bank of Belgium, so we lived in one of the bank apartments. We had a French poodle, Misou and three cats: Menouche, Sultan, and Pilou. During the week, we visited famous places in Brussels. Sometimes, we shopped and knitted. When the weekend came, we all would hop into our Opel and start for the Ardennes Mountains. The Denies had bought a new summer house and we spent the time fixing it. Nicole, Claudine and I took sun baths and swam after the chores were done. Sometimes, we went across the way and worked on a farm. Some week-ends, we visited the coastal towns and Flanders. The American Field Service was always there as a friend and guide.
