THE 1962 REFLECTOR GRIFFITH HIGH SCHOOL GRIFFITH, INDIANA TABLE OF Activities 6- 1 9 Clubs 20-37 Sports 38-6 1 2 CONTENTS A school year is filled with many wonderful and exciting events, moments, and people. This year was no exception with its dances, games, classes, faculty, and friends. For some of us it is all over, while others are just beginning to carve out their high school careers. But no matter what, the memories of the past year will linger with all of us in the form of PANTHER PAW PRINTS XU jv J? The backfield was all underclassmen with the exception of standout fullback Dan Jordan. The starting line loses only four seniors. This leaves the team with a strong chance for a conference win next year. The sea- son record was 5—3—1 . Coach Dan Leslie, in his second year of coaching at Griffith, headed the freshmen and also helped on the J.V. His freshman team, which was very thin, could manage no better than a 1—3—1 record. PANTHERS FINISH REBUILDING YEAR AT 7-15 Basketball at G.H.S. this year was for the purpose of rebuilding, after all, five starters from the 1960-1961 team were graduated. The season this year was on a sad note for the first half of the year. Then the team, which was composed of one senior starter (Steve Stig- litz), began to come around. The Panthers finished the season on a high note which makes things impressive for next year. The only Panther losses are Stiglitz and Moats. This season, Ralph Witt led the team in rebounds and in field goal percentages with a .56 mark. Stiglitz was We They Rensselaer 37 52 Gary Roosevelt 44 64 Highland 45 23 Chesterton 53 73 Portage 47 49 Calumet 42 50 Wirt 36 65 Edison 62 73 East Gary 55 44 Hammond Tech 65 69 the top scorer with a high game of 34, and he also led in free throw percentages. Highlights of the season were wins over Crown Point and Lowell, along with Stiglitz ' s 34 against Hammond Tech. The Panthers won 2 of their first 1 1 and closed with 5 of their last 1 1. Many of the games lost near the end were by only a few points. The Panthers under Coach Mack finished fifth in the conference with a 5—4 record and ended the season with a 7—15 mark. FINISHES FAST FOR FINE SEASON The J.V. basketball team under Coach Dan Leslie had a bit more promising season than the varsity. The team was composed of mostly sophomores, along with a jun- ior and a couple of freshmen. This squad had a couple of fine shooting guards along with a few rebounders. Sophomores, Jim McLean and Bill Wilier, looked very promising as did freshman, Rich Beach. Dan Gerrity, a sophomore and Jim Elman, a jun- ior, did a good job on the backboards. Team hustle and spirit made the season very successful. Coach Leslie, in his first year at the J.V. helm, should have a bright future as many of the team will still be playing J.V. due to the few varsity losses. The highlight of the season was second place finish win in the J.V. Tourney. 49 GOLFERS END AVERAGE SEASON Golf in its fourth year at Griffith is becoming more popular every year, as 30 boys turned out for golf this year. From this group came seven consistent swingers, but no real stand-outs. The team, which finished with a near .500 record, entered the LaPorte Invitational, Lake Hills Country Club Meet, and the LaPorte Sectional. Under Mr. Reed in his second year of coaching, the team finished fourth in the con- ference with a 5—3 record. The major letter winners on this young team were Earl Govert, Bill Starek, Dave Blan- chard, Ron Govert, Jim Vestal, Mike O ' Halloran, and John Moats. Bill Starek was the team leader. KNEELING: Ron Govert, Dave Blanchard, Bill Starek, Earl Govert. STANDING: Coach Reed, Mike O ' Hal- loran, Ron Holeway, Jim Vestal, and John Moats. SECOND ROW: Doug Waldron, Jack Krygoski, Mike For the first time in three years the Panther harriers had a strong contending team. The team this year was a young team, and only two of the first ten were seniors. The team was comprised mostly of sophomores and freshmen. This year the Panthers beat every team in the conference except Portage in pre- conference duals. Then the team was struck with a few injuries which really hurt the team. Terry Boy Williams was lost for the season after the first four meets due to in- juries, and Mark Kender couldn ' t run up to par because of a foot injury. There were some very good times this year as five boys broke the 11-minute barrier. Rich E. James posted the best time of the year when he turned in a 10:27. Ron Govert, who improved rapidly, turned in a time of 10:40 and led the Panthers in the Conference run. Mark Kender followed closely with a time of 10:43. Freshman Roy Runyan ran very well and turned in a 10:56 race. Dave Spurling also ran near the 11-minute marker. KNEELING: Coach O ' Rourke, Mike Seubert, Bob Burks, Don Good, Ed Siurek, Bob Funk, Paul Lesniak, Jack Johnston, Rich James, Coach Sanders. TRACK TEAM FINISHES SECOND The track squad, consisting of mostly sophomores and juniors, finished the 1961 season with a highly respectable 9—4 rec- ord. This team was perhaps the surprise of the year when with only 10 boys it made a tremendous second place Calumet Confer- ence finish. We entered the Crown Point Invitational at the University of Chicago Fieldhouse, the Hobart Relays, and the Little Five. The team, led by Kosteba, Burks, Ditmars, Jordan, James, and Mills, was successful in establishing some very good times. Burks tied for first in the sectional with a 12 ' vault but failed to repeat as a state contestant in the regional. Mills soared to high jump 6 ' . In the distance events, respectable times were turned in. Jordan ran 2:05.5 for a sec- ond in the conference, and James ran a 4:57 mile and a conference third. Christen- son, our 440 man, ran around :56. Kosteba won a conference 220 race by a foot in 23.8. 52 Bob Burks Joe Kostebo Don Good Melvin Blair 53 Steve Stiglitz Infield Ted Kinsey Infield Dave Price Infield ZABROSKI COACHES STRONG BASEBALL TEAM AS STICKMEN WIN CONFERENCE AGAIN Gary Fagan Catcher Dan Lazar Pitcher ALL-CONFERENCE BATTERY COMBO 54 Ron Price Outfield Ron Marion Outfield Gary Wools Outfield The Griffith Stickmen closed the 1961 baseball cam- paign with the best record ever posted by a Griffith High team. During the season the Panthers aver- aged a little better than seven runs a game, compared to an average of a little more than one per game for the opposition. The Griffith boys had garnared 107 runs at the end of the year ' s outings, while the chal- lengers had crossed the plate only 22 times. In posting their 7—1 conference record, the Panthers shut-out five of their seven foes. Their only conference loss came in their game against Lowell. Griffith ' s leading pitcher was Dan Lazar with a 9—1 record and 133 strike-outs in 71 innings. Leading hitter was Stan Koby with a .500 average throughout the sea- son. Gary Fagan followed with a .400 average. The major letter winners were Fagan, Lazar, Koby, Palko, R. Price, Marion, Stiglitz, D. Price, Wools, and Kinsey. Not directly associated with routine school life, our school board receives little appreciation or recognition; so we do want to express our grati- tude to the following five men for their dedicated service as members of the school board in Griffith this past year: Mr. Jesse Sheets, President; Mr. Ira Roberts, Secretary; Mr. Ronald Regnier, Treasurer; Mr. John Hilbrich, Board Attorney; and Dr. Paul Schilling, a special member because of his position as superintendent. Mr. Sheets is married and has three children and is employed as a senior laboratory technician at Sinclair Research. He is currently a member of the Democratic Club, the Indiana School Board Association Legislative Committee, and is chairman of Region One, which includes Lake, Porter, and LaPorte counties, for the state legislative commit- tee. New to the board this year, Mr. Roberts is married and has four children and is employed as Manager of Industrial Gas Sales at Northern Public Service Co. He is also active in the Meth- odist Church as Assistant Lay Leader and chairman of the church. Mr. Regnier is chief accountant at the American Smelting and Refining Co. For 17 years Mr. Regnier was in the U.S. Army for active and re- serve duty, and he is presently a major in the U.S. Army Reserve, Retired. Born and raised in Griffith, Mr. Hilbrich is married and has three children. A lawyer by pro- fession, he is a member of both the East Chicago and American Bar Association, and is town attor- ney. Mr. Hilbrich is also manager of the Babe Ruth Baseball League and Co-ordinator for Griffith Little League. Understanding, helpful, and capable are ad- jectives that describe the feelings of we, the stu- dent body of G.H.S., about our principal, Mr. Edwin Bridges. We are not the only ones, however, who know the value of Mr. Bridges, for last spring he was chosen by the Jay Cees, to be one of the three outstanding men in Indiana for 1960. This notable achievement was based on his service to the community and his success in his profession. Coming to Griffith in 1956, Mr. Bridges was Dean of Boys for two years and Assistant Principal for two years. Before this he was an English in- stru ctor and director of public relations in Bremen Community High School in Midlothian, Illinois, for two years. In the latter position he wrote all the news of the school for seven newspapers in the Chicago area. Mr. Bridges has been married for nearly eight years and has two children. His boy is three years old and his daughter is two. He received his bach- elors degree from the University of Missouri, his masters from the University of Chicago, and has taken post graduate work at the University of Chicago and Indiana University. Dr. Paul Schilling, who moved to Griffith a year ago to serve as Superintendent of Griffith Public Schools, was born in 1926 in Huntington, Indiana. He attended Huntington College and received his B.S. there. From Indiana University he obtained his M.S. and D.E. degrees. Before coming to Griffith, Dr. Schilling was principal of the Univer- sity High School of Bloomington, Indiana. Dr. Schilling has been married twelve years and has three sons. They have been in the second, third, and fifth grades this past year. Sports are Dr. Schilling ' s primary interest with basketball his favorite. For three years he coached in Elkhart, Indiana. He also likes carpentry very much and has helped build several houses. He is a member of Indiana State Teachers Asso- ciation, National Education Association, and the National Association of Secondary School Princi- pals. f V f ■■ Ess 65 COUNSELORS Mrs. Cecile Warner, the Director of Guidance, has held her position at Griffith High School for twelve years. Though she was born in Bridgeport, Illinois, she was graduated from Okemah High School in Oklahoma. After completing high school she studied at East Central State Teachers ' College in Ada, Oklahoma, and then transfered to Ball State Teachers ' College in Muncie, Indiana. As director of guidance, Mrs. Warner ' s job is counseling students by helping them choose the right courses to take in high school and later to help them choose a career. Her outside interests lie in travel though she also likes art, photography, and reading. Mr. Sydney Vaughn is Dean of Boys at Griffith High and is just completing his second year here. He is also co-sponsor of the National Honor Society and says he likes his present position very well. Former- ly Mr. Vaughn taught music and English for one year in Montana and then several years in Illinois. Mr. Vaughn was born in 1923 in Chi- cago, Illinois. Upon graduation from high school, he attended Vandercook College of Music in Chicago. His education there, however, was interrupted by three years in the army as a bandsman; but he did graduate from Vandercook with a bach- elor ' s of science degree after returning to civilian life. He also has a master ' s of science. Married for fifteen years, he has two sons. His outstanding interests are target shooting, fishing, and hiking. Model rail- roads delight him, also. 66 A lifetime resident of Griffith and a graduate of Griffith High School is Mrs. Leona Kane, who is now in her seventh year as secretary to the superintendent. Besides her three sons and two granddaughters, Mrs. Kane uses her time as a charter member of the Tri-Kappa Sorority and also loves water-skiing. In her fourth year as secretary to the superin- tendent is Mrs. Shirley Otves. She graduated from Hammond High and has been a resident of Griffith for the past eleven years. Mrs. Otvos participates in Little League in which her two sons are players, is active in P.T.A., and is a Sunday School teacher. Her hobbies include bowling and swimming. Mrs. Mary Plohg is now in her second year as Mr. Bridges ' secretary. Her job brings her in con- tact with nearly all of the students whom she finds well-behaved. Mrs. Plohg was born in Omaha, Nebraska, but attended grade school in Dyer Township. She is an alumna of Dyer High School. Mrs. Plohg ' s hobby is having fun with her family and watching sports. Mrs. Evelyn Downing, school secretary, was born in Gary. She has lived in Griffith since she was six years old. Having attended St. Mary ' s Elementary school in Griffith, she later graduated from G.H.S. Before working for the Griffith school system, Mrs. Downing was assistant manager at the Griffith license bureau. Now in her first year at the high school, she finds her work very pleasant. Her two daughters, five and fen years of age, take up most of her time. Mrs. Downing finds that doing things with her husband and children is her hobby. FACULTY RICHARD C. BECK B.S., M.S. . . . They decided (as we hope you will decide) to let Inland Steel Company help them plan their future. Some are gaining knowledge and experience in special trades to become journeyman machinists, carpenters or electricians . . . some are concentrating on certain phases of steelmaking by working in the open hearth shops, the cold rolling mills, or the galvinizing lines. Still others are working in laboratories building a sound foundation for a future in steel research. Inland offers the high school graduate an excellent opportunity to further his education. Employees may participate in a variety of on-the-job training programs, or they can continue their formal education by regis- tering for evening courses offered by local Purdue and Indiana University Extension Centers. Plan now to investigate the unlimited opportunities for you in steel with the midwest ' s own steel company INLAND STEEL. COMPLIMENTS OF WALINGER STUDIO, INC.
