Griffith ' s Junior Varsity, under Coach Steve Stanczak, had a 2-3-2 record against very tough opposition. Playing the first game of the season, they held VALPO scoreless, but they couldn ' t punch over either in a 0-0 tie. The J. V. ' s won their first game, beating a weak DYER team 19-6. Austgen scored twice and Kosmoski once. Griffith lost to a good PORTAGE team 13-0, as the Indians scored in the last quarte r . Traveling to CROWN POINT, they beat the Bulldogs 1 8 -0. Kenealy scored twice on passes from Doan, and Kosmoski added the clincher in 3rd period and a 58-yard run. MERRILLVILLE and Griffith battled to a 7-7 tie, both scoring in the 4th quarter. Griffith ' s touchdown came on a pass from Doan to McGee. The J. V. ' s defense performed admirably as they held E. C. ROOSEVELT in check for 3 quarters, but the powerful Roosevelt single wing scored 2 touch- downs in the last period for a 14-0 win. Powerful HAMMOND NOLL beat Griffith in the season ' s final in Hammond 26-0. 51 Griffith opened the football season most successfully against the big Lowell Red Devils, beating them 38-0. The Panthers scored three times in the first quarter and ground out 414 yards in the game with Coach Beck ' s Split T. Touch- downs were by Gorsich (2), Holmes (2), Dolak (1), and Pisut (1). Griffith’s line completely out -played the larger Devils. Turning back Valparaiso ' s threats in the 1st period, the Panther ' s Gorsich scored, giving Griffith a 7-0 halftime lead. Dolak and Gorsich scored twice more before the Viking punched over to end the game 21-6. Vicious tackling by Griffith’s secondary, led by Holmes, and good downfield blocking won the game. The Panthers played Dyer ' s Indians in one of our oldest and hardest fought traditional games. Dyer battled hard, but Griffith turned the game into a rout for the second year in a row. Pisut passed 6 0 yards to Dolak. In the second half Gorsich and Dolak, behind the blocking of the Panther ' s line, unleashed long runs for markers; in the 4th quarter Gor- sich plunged over to make the final score 25-0. Hampered by Key injuries, the Pan- thers gathered steam in the second half to whip a big hungry Portage team. The Indians moved easily for the first touch- down and scored once more, after Dolak caught a deflected Pisut pass to make the score 14-6. In the 2nd half the Panthers fired up for 3 touchdowns on Pisut-Dolak passes, a pass play that developed into a run by Holmes and a blocked punt by Foss for a 27-14 victory. Merrillville, perennially tough, was no match for the determined Griffith team. The Panthers gained consistently in one of their best games and won it 27-7. In the title game, after a week of flood fighting, Griffith was beaten at Hobart. The Brickies single wing on the muddy field proved too much for the Panthers. Although Griffith lead in every statistic, the score read 25-6. Homecoming and Coach Beck ' s 20th year in coaching were celebrated most convincingly, 34-6. Injury riddled Gary Wirt gained only 10 total yards, while the Panthers had 194 yards and made 5 touchdowns. Crown Point ' s fighting Bulldogs upset Griffith as the Panthers fumbled 8 times. C . P . got two quick touchdowns in the first quarter and won the game 13-0. The Panthers journeyed to West La- fayette to play the Red Devils. Holmes scored on a short plunge, but the Devils led at the half 12-7. The Panthers fought back on a long touchdown drive, capped by D o 1 a k , who also kicked both extra points, and won the game 14-12. Champion G ar y Edison defeated Griffith in the last game of the season since 1950, winning 7 games and losing 3. Although we only lost 1 conference game, we tied for third place with Hobart in the power -packed Calumet Confer- ence.
