Griffith scored on a 20 -yard run by Gorsich, and a plunge by Dolak in the third period iced the game. Sharp tackling by Kelleher, Stanczak, Greger, and Whitacre held the Devils to three first downs. Opening with a field goal and adding single tallies in the third and fourth auarters, the Valparaiso Vikings beat the Panthers in the second game of the year. Poor blocking hurt our attack, and the statistics were clearly in favor of Valpo. Scoring two TD ' s in the first period, one by Holmes and the other on a pass from Whitacre to Stanczak, Griffith defeated Dyer for their second win. Conspicious individual performance by Gorsich in the last two quarters, aided by the fine blocking of Mose, Martin- sen, and Scherer, clinched the game. Griffith scored their third victory by de- feating the Portage Indians. A short dash by Gorsich gave the Panthers their first score. In the third period Gorsich, intercepting a pass, carried the ball back 60 yards to score again. Standouts for the Panthers were A1 Green, Pisut, Morton, and Dixon. The Panthers lost their first conference game of the year to the Merrillville Pirates, who took the opening kickoff and marched to the only score of the game in just nine plays. After that neither team could move effectively. Scoring two early TD ' s on long passes, the Hobart Brickies handed our boys their second successive defeat. Taking over on a blocked kick on the Hobart twenty, Holmes carried the pigskin over for the first Griffith TD. Just before halftime Whitacre sliced over tackle and rambled eighty yards for a score. In the second half the Brickies added the clincher on a long punt return. After two and a half periods of defensive ball the Panthers defeated Gary Wirt. On a long drive late in the third period Gorsich scored. Again Gorsich capped a 50 yard march to score early in the fourth quarter. Late in the quarter Scherer took a 30 yard pass from Stanc- zak for the score. Dolak converted after all three TD ' s. Foss, Van Van Horssen, and Bannon played a fine defensive game. Scoring early and throwing up a tight defense, the Panthers edged out Crown Point. Gorsich scored in the first period climaxing a 68 yard drive. Dolak added the all important conversion. In the third period Crown Point scored, but the try for the extra point was wide. Gatlin did a spectacular job on defense, inter- cepting two stray passes. Morton ' s Governers invaded Griffith for the last game of the year and defeated the Panthers while playing in melting snow and mud. Morton drove for a score in the first period after an exchange of punts, and added another in the third quarter.
