E. Lee Rebels. Lee, hoping for one of the best seasons it has ever had, was favored to win. On the other hand, the Eagles, season was expected to be slow because they were hard hit by graduation and left short on man power and experience. Most of the fans were ready to settle for a scoreless tie. The only score of the game came with only seven and a half minutes left to play. Leeis Jimmy Cavan got away from the Eagles in the rain and the mud to run forty- five yards for a touchdown. Until the second half the Eagles had traded blow for blow with the more experienced Rebels, but they were unable to stop Cavan. The game ended with the stubborn Eagles yielding to Lee 7-0. Griffin, seeking its first win of the year, met Sprayberry for its second game. The Eagles went ahead in the hrst quarter when Bay Cole recovered a Spray berry fumble and ran fifty-five yards for a touchdown. Tommy lson plunged over for the extra point. Sprayberry, however, after a fifty-six yard drive, tied up the score in the second period. After a scoreless third period, Sprayberry was again put in scoring position when Griffin fumbled. Sprayberry now led 13-7. Late in the fourth quarter Grifhn began its drive for thc Sprayberry goal. Bobby Gene Pierce hit Jimmy Terrell with a screen pass which kept the Griffin drive moving. The Eagles' march continued, and Ray Cole plunged in from the two for the tieing touchdown. Thus they scored the winning extra poi11t with less than two minutes left in the crucial game. The final score was Griffin 14- and Spraybcrry 13. R. L. Osborne, a new team in Region 41-AAA competition, dealt the Eagles a 20-13 sub-regional setback in their third game of the JOHN WALLACE HUGH NTCLAURIN Fullback Tackle season. Osborne ran over the Griffin defense in the first quarter to lead the Eagles by thirteen points. The speedy running of A. J. Bethune enabled Griliin to score early in the second period. Jimmy Terrell made the extra point. The Cardinals, however, took the kickoff and drove sixty yards in fourteen plays for their final touchdown. The half ended with Osborne leading 20-7. The two teams exchanged punts in the third period and then Griffin set a touchdown drive in motion. Cole, Terrell, and Bethune hammered through for two first downs. Bethune then broke through for a forty-three yard run that put the Eagles at the Osborne one. Terrell rammed over for the touchdown. Neither team was able to score again, and the game ended with Osborne winning 20-13. The injury-riddled Eagles were all but eliminated from the 4--AAA title race when they lost their fourth game of the season to GMA, 14-0. GMA scored its first touchdown early in the first quarter when Griffin fumbled and the Kadets went over on a pass play. In the second period GMA intercepted a Grifhn pass. The Kadets then used a pair of passes which put them over for their second touch- down. The Eagles had several good drives but the tight GMA defense was able to stop them each time. In their fifth game of the year, the scrappy Eagles were nipped short by the South Cobb team, 7-6. Although it was the Eagles, third loss, coaches had high praise for the strongly improved Griffin team. Griffin took the opening kickoff and drove 77 yards for a touchdown. The game was a close fight all the way. South Cobb finally had a successful drive in the third quarter and went over for the touchdown. They also made the extra point, which clinched the game for them. . . . It was the Panthers who put the points on the scoreboard, although Griffin got the best of the statistics. A 15 yard pe11a1ty killed one drive and a had pitehout stopped another. Campbell broke away in the hrst period for a touchdown. The Eagles outplayed Campbell both offensively and defensively, but Campbell won 6-O. The Eagles suffered their worst. defeat of the season in East Point against the Russell High Wiifdcats. The stubborn Eagles fought hard but were unable to make a fruitful break in the Russell defense. Russell scored its hrst touchdown late in the first quarter. Griffin defenses picked up in the second quarter and kept the Wfildcats from scoring. ln the second half Russell took the kickoff and scored in three plays. Then the Wiildcats made two more touchdowns in the fourth quarter to defeat Griffin, 27-O. The Eagles really baked the Homecoming cake when they trampled the Marietta Blue Devils 20-0. Marietta, one of 11- AAA7s best teams, has never beaten Griffin High in its history. The Eagles, who had been plagued by mistakes in past games, played almost flawless ball. In the second quarter the Eagles made their first touchdown after a Of- yard drive. The Blue Devils were held to two first downs in the second half, both late in the fourth quarter. Griffin drove 333 yards in the third period. 25 of the yards came on passes by Pierce to Bethune and Bethune to Cole. lson scored from the Hve and Bethune kicked the extra point. Pierce put Griffin in scoring position again when he intercepted a pass early in the fourth and re- turned it to the Klarictta 29. Pierce, lson. Cole, and Bethune rammed the ball to the two, then lson bulled over. Hugh l.ewis killed all Nlariettais chances of scoring late in the foutrh when he intercepted a desperation pass. Billy Yin-kers, Danny Ken- drick. ,ferry flaygood, Jimmy Goss, Ray Heflin. and ,ferry Ellis led Griffinis defensive attack. The 20-O victory over Marietta climaxed llomecoming festivities for Grifhn lfigh. In the next to the last game of the season the Eagles ran over Cherokee County in a -L7-21, victory. The Eagles took the kick off and droye 61- yards for their first touchdown. They gained their second touchdown after a 57 yard drive, 31 of which was made by Tommy lson. Griffin scored two more touchdowns before the half and Cherokee one, closing out the half with Griffin leading 20-7. Cherokee County scored onee in the third, but Grifhn failed to score. Griffin scored twice in the fourth after two fifty yard marches to the goal line. Cherokee scored once again thanks to a 32 yard screen pass. With time running out in the fourth period, Griffin took to the air. Pierce hit Killings- worth for 10 yards, Lewis passed to lson for nine yards and Durden pitched to Caldwell for the touchdown. After a bad snap Robert Phillips returned the ball from the 30 for the extra point. Grifhn won 417-21. Griffin ended its 1960 season when it tied Decatur 20-20. The Eagles played fine ball, but Decatur came back in the last quarter to tie up the score. Although not on top, score-wise, in all the games, Griffin was beaten by very small margins in the games she lost. The team played hard, worked together and overcame the handicaps of inexperience and lack of manpower. They overcame these handicaps too late to be in the region and state race but the boys did a mighty good job. The Seniors will long remember that last llomecoming game with Marietta. To the halls of Griffin High School Every voice will bid farewell, And shimmer off in twilight Like the old vesper bell. One day a hush will fall. The footsteps of us all Will echo down the halls and disappear. But as we sadly start Our journeys far apart, A part of every heart will linger here, In the sacred halls of learning, Where we've lived and learned to know That through the years welll see you In the sweet afterglow. The great love that burns inside us Lights a spark of memories, And when We see your colors, ' We will long for the past. Now the times we loved are slipping And the thoughts that were so dear. The days we lived are passing But our love holds us near. The friends we made are dear, Our school is dearer still, The love we have for you will always live. Welve fought your battles fairly, Your spirit leads us on, We owe to you our life, our love, our all. For we love you, Griffin High School, With your Eagle wings adorned, Weill watch your flight forever And our love stays with you. Q?
