Tl1i1'!v-xix I E EE 'THIRTY-EIGHT CLASS POEM, 1958 The little children we once were Walked blindly the path of life, With no understanding of what was there- It all seemed endless strife. We walked by faith, the way not clear, But God led, and we trusted Life. This path ahead had for its span Much more than we could see, But our Master had counseled every man Of the Glory yet to be. And so 'twas decided by our clan To go on patiently. Years treading on unfamiliar ground Brought us nearer to the sun, But on looking forward we have found Our journey's just begun. Before us lies an invincible mound, To be faced by everyone. Those who have crossed the mound already Know what life gave and denied And now, at last, we've come to see What's on the other side. May we face the world with courage and be Led by Faith as our guide! Marie Tedder Thirty-seven THE . POTLIGHT ...N D TTY. . , fn . - . ,. ...... 2 A ,.,. After a full nine-game season, Grifiin was declared CO-Cl'3ll'DIOI1, with Spalding High School, of the North Georgia Interscholastic Conference. As may be seen from the scores, Griiiin defeated some of the outstanding teams in high school circles of Georgia. Four defeats of the previous season were avenged when Griflin won easily from Russell, Gainesville, Decatur and Cartersville. In nine games Coach McLendon's high-scoring aggregation rolled up 328 points, while holding the opposition to 12. And those 12 points were scored by a Bowden team that already had been badly licked. They came after Grifiin's regulars had piled up 38 points and McLendon had sent in his second and third stringers. During the season Captain Powers legl the touchdown parade with 19. E. B. Jones had 13 to his credit. Clomer Lewis made 7, all of them coming on his brilliant end- around runs. Charlie VValler, plucky little second string halfback, crossed the goal line four times. Robin Gunter tallied three times on end-arounds and passes. Gunter was on the receiving end of one pass from Captain Powers that netted 50 full yards. Johnny Clements scored twice during the season. G. C. Helms and Harold Hadden made one each. At the conclusion of the season, coaches in the N. G. I. C. selected two all-star teams. Griffin led the way with three men on the first team. They were Captain Powers at quarterback, Clomer Lewis at end, and James Ragsdale at tackle. E. B. Jones was barely nosed out of a place on the first squad, but easily polled enough votes to rate a half back position on the second team. Robin Gunter, an endg John Underwood, a guard, James Pounds, center, and Johnny Clements, quarterback received honorable mention. Members of the 1937 championship squad included: Watson, Beckham, Greer. Leary, Turner, Powers, Spier, Waller, Larkin, Clements, Hadden, Kile, Helms, Jones, Davis Williams, Downey, Lewis, Gunter, Ragsdale, Strickland, Wilson, Philip Wil- liams, Pounds.
