The first young ladies attending The Mountain Female Seminary would not have been able to conjugate the verb 'iestarn because it was not Latin or French . . . it was Spanish. Approximately thirty years ago, Birmingham Hrst offered classes in Spanish. In 1945 Senorita Rivera organized the Grier Spanish Club. Today the mem- ory book of the Club is filled with enjoyable events . . . an evening's entertainment at the Cafe Sanborn, The Pan American Day program of 1952 with its bull fight, style show, and banquet, and the breaking of the 'iPinata at the Christmas Fiesitas, now a tradition at Grier. Turn back the pages! The library then was in what is now our main office and was combined with the English room. Looking for a good book to read just for fun? Oh, no! These shelves were lined with volumes on religion, histories of the Presby- terian Church, and classics from Miss Davis's personal collection. Turn the pages to 1920, when the Davis Library was opened, then to 1949, when Miss Kelly, the Hrst trained librarian, took charge, and note the evolution! In 1953, we enter an attractive well-equipped library and find shelves of fiction, drama, biography, and research material to suit every need and taste. First row: Norris, Slaughter, B. B Johnson R Ramage, Kidd, Campbell, Iirnmy La Rosa. Zuill, Bloomer, Curphey, Baruch, Slaughter, Barnes Haugh, Scheider, Bartlett. PUST ANU RAIL ELUB A young lady of the Birmingham School astridc a horse! Probably not . . . until Mrs. A. R. Grier taught riding from 1912-1917. We are certain that this daring new custom was not changed when her son, Thomas G. Grier, became riding instructor in 1921. Since then, generations of Grier girls have plowed their way up the hill to the riding ring through snow, mud, or heat. Grier has become noted for its horseman- ship. The Post and Rail Club, organized in 1948, and now under the instruction of James La Rosa, has put on spectacular horse shows and had girls compete successfully in the Pennsylvania National Horse Show.
