In the words of his everlasting melody, Remember? let us remember the class, the freshman class of 1939, remember? A small group of nine frightened young ladies was to compose the future senior class of 1943. Of these now members of the Senior Class, are Patty Bixler, June Rorke, and Debbie Sanford. Great plans were made of how they as friends would continue throughout four years at Grier, when at that time they would leave the school as alumnae. During the first quarter of the school year, a new girl arrived from Belgium. With her foreign accent and dazzling ways, Marie Jeanne Pasquier entered into the typical student's life at Grier. Today, she is one of the few left of the '39 Freshman Class. Remember the days of joy and strife, of laughter, remember? As sophomores, the class grew and was no longer included with the intermediate group. The new personalities which appeared there, were Patty Michaels, who proved her ability in dramatics with her one-line partg Chile Rodgers, who immediately entered with envied enthusiasm into all activities involving horsesg Sally Feuchtwanger, who convinced all who attempted to spell her surname that it was a possible task, Judy Brown, who related fantastic tales of a sword collection, Chris Rankins, the English novelist, and Rosa Warner, renowned for her piano playing. ' 30 if it E 1943 PINE NEEDLE In politics, we were extremely successful until two seventeen cent pieces were dis- covered to be missing from the class treasury. Sally Feuchtwanger was, in that year, secretary of the sophomore class, and although she strongly objected to our accusations we informed her of our suspicions to her guilt of embezzling the class funds. At the end of the year, the class gave in honor of themselves, a banquet. Remember the drill, the bugle call? Under the guidance of Pop Moulton, all of the classes of the school marched in formation up and down the hockey field, many afternoons, week after week, preparing for the Prize Drill Exhibition to be held at the end of the school year. Each Saturday morning the plaintive sound of a bugle reached the cars of all those who participated in Time and Detention. Who attempted to master the diffi- cult process of blowing the bugle? None other than Chile Rodgers. Although much of her time was applied to practicing on the bugle, these hours were not fruitless, for shc was granted the enviable privilege of leaving her room after light bell to blow taps. Remember tennis, hockey, and basketball? The grating crack of a hockey ball against flesh and bone echoed from the hockey field to the infirmary, where the tormented cries of victims of Miss Karns' twelve day cure of Absorbine Junior reached the remaining players' ears. Judges of tennis matches and basketball games gently nursed sore necks gained from inspecting every play, and planned methods of escaping the multitudes of Greens and Golds who rushed upon each other when the scores at the end of the games were announced. The competition between the two school teams was keen, and many promising athletes arrived in the junior class. Jeanne Fleming abandoned her dignity as a junior long enough to kick her way to fame as a goalie, for the Greens. Will you ever forget the countless number of times that Ann Clarke lost her glasses? And the first appearance that Janet Kasper made in her checkered riding breeches? Blue Boy looked twice. Speaking of appearances, wasn't the Stunt Night fun, when Lydia Titus introduced Oscar, her pet flea, to an audience of the entire student body and caused Chuck Knickerbocker much agony and distress when Oscar was found to have been put in the pound along with June Rorke's books? Against great competition, a junior came out on top in the annual speech contest. lt was a big moment for Dottie de Lutio, as well as for the junior class. The junior class officers were Patty Bixler, President, Debbie Sanford, Vice Presi- dent, and Chile Rodgers, Secretary and Treasurer. Under the guidance of Bix, the juniors in taking the traditional candles, became sophisticated seniors. As juniors, we were always hungry, therefore, led by Jean Tradup, we armed our- selves with various culinary equipment, and renamed the Senior Tearoom, The Mouse- trap. jean, the manager of the tearoom, arranged for a shower to be given the re- painted and redecorated Mousetrap the following fall, and with visions of sizzling bacon, we left for the summer vacation. Remember the class, the senior class of 1943, remember? The big moment arrived at last, and we who had awaited the year in which we would become members of the Senior Class, were granted that pleasure. In the fall of 1942, we returned to school with many tales to relate of the summer vacation. 31 1943 PINE NEEDLE if if if The school program was immediately commenced and the class officers were elected as follows: jean Tradup, the President, Patti Preston, Vice President, Lydia Titus, Secretary, and Patty Bixler, Treasurer. Clad in the traditional blazers, June Rorke became Praefect of the Gold Team, and Debbie Sanford, of the Greens. After a commendable record during her four years at Grier, Patty Bixler was elected President of the Student Council. Dorothy de Lutio was made Editor-in-Chief of the Pine Needle, and Patty Michaels, Editor of the Cricket. Should India be given her dominion status now?', A debate was given by mem- bers of the senior class before an audience of the student body, and the members of the faculty. Personal feelings were forgotten as rebuttal was craftily hurled to and fro by the debaters. Introduced by Betsy Rieley, Sandy Morse, Patty Michaels, and Libby Van der Noot staunchly maintained their opinion that India should not have her dominion status at the present time, while Shirli Cohn and her colleagues represented the affirma- tive of the question. Business boomed at the Mousetrap, and many seniors served food on Fridays and Saturdays. Of these volunteers, were Anne Levin, Patti Preston, M. J. Baldwin, and Bibs Curtiss, taking time out from their household chores to dance to the music of the nickelodian. Modesty concealed Helen Neff's talents until the student music recital, at which time, eager applause brought her to the stage three times, after she had sung, Giannia Mia, and several other lovely selections. Athletics in our Senior year were full of countless thrills, and team spirit blazed in every heart. After two exciting hockey games, the Gold Team, with the absence because of illness of their Praefect, June Rorke, valiantly held their positions. In the third game, June, now playing with her team, proved that in spite of the muddy field, her team could win. So hats off to the Golds for a deserving victory. The Greens came back with a snarl in basketball, and won the first game. Then came the curse of every Praefect, injuries. With a list of the hurt, Debbie and june sur- veyed their teams for players, and by precision and determination, the Greens defeated the Golds by a score of three points. Itis grand to work for something when at the end one has obtained his desire, and has had fun accomplishing it. With the goal in sight, some of the seniors presented a Stunt Night in order to conclude the payments of the Mirrophone. Sponsored by Patty Michaels, Dottie de Lutio and Lydia Titus, the Stunt Night program commenced. Lydia presented a humorous monologue, which she titled Susie,,' and believe it or not even the faculty was laughing. Dottie provided laughs by her imitations of what an announcer should not do, and Patty Michaels fremember her dramaticsj gave an eerie effect to the Old Fashioned melodrama. Next in the spot-light appeared Any Twains Going Norf? Bixler, and Joe College Sanford. If you have ever experienced four consecutive blowouts on one date, you too can sympathize with Patty and Debbie, who presented a skit with puppy love as a main factor. The evening was fun, and after an ice cream sale, the audience departed from the auditorium with one last look, perhaps hoping for more entertainment. After having spent these happy days together, we gathered again in a courtyard around which the juniors were circled. Singing the class song, we, as graduates, pre- sented our candles to each junior, and our emblem, Pegasus, was burned by the Class President. We know that we'll never forget it all, these days at Grier, Weill remember. 32 X-,jf -gy .2 0 0 0 ',4 ,sumti R CQMN 5, . gs Y X J ' PM .Nz 'X' 0 ,tfyu 0 0 2? a f 4 0 W l 0 0 V 0 f .9 ' Class Prop ecy Grand Central Depot in 1953 has the same crowded and hurried appearance as it possessed any time in the previous decade you may have been passing through the tre- mendous station in New York City. There is a constant murmur in the air and the impatient cry of red cap-red cap. Here, in this metropolis of commotion, is our rendezvous with fate. The fate of so called coincidence. The crowd seems to fade away, and the noise to die out until it is no more than a very faint murmur as we recognize two of our old school chums coming out of Track 3 entrance. Mrs. Jock Letiler, the former Patty Bixler, trips nonchalantly towards the informa- tion bureau accompanied by Miss Patti Preston, a movie actress fast becoming of Joanne Davis fame. As our friends near the bureau, they run into a petite little lady trailed by five men. Who should it be but cute and tiny Ann Levin! The information bureau still stands the same-crowds of people pushing and shov- ing to get near the window. As the ladies are about to ask for a local time table, they realize that Shirli Cohn is the charming lady answering the travellers, numerous ques- tions. With an expression of flabbergasted amazement on their faces, Mrs. Lefller 33 1943 PINE NEEDLE if if f and Miss Preston meander over to the ticket window. Where to, Madame? asked a pleasant voice recognized as Lib Van der Noot's. Lib was accomplished in so many things that she was unable to make up her mind which subject to pursue. Incidentally she does some excellence writing as a side line. Before leaving the ticket window a lady barged up pushing the two aside and calling, One way to New Rochelle, please. Lydia Titus didn't want to miss that train as she missed one in Philadelphia a decade ago. Miss Titus is the trained flea artist. Miss Preston, as all movie actresses, had several articles to send by express, so she wandered down to the express room leaving her companion to go to the lunch counter. On the way down to the basement, Mrs. Eick whom we remember as Chuck Knicker- bocker, was rushing upstairs accompanied by Sandy Morse, Supervisor of the Fifth Avenue Flower Hospital. Dr. Kasper is also at the hospital with her assistant nurse, Jean Fleming. Marie Jean Pasquier is doing some final work in the chemistry laboratory there before returning to Europe to start her career. Rosa Warner is also working in a hospital as a laboratory technician. She is at the Johns Hopkins. Continuing on her way and passing the station shops, Patti noticed many dresses in Baldwin styleg then arriving at the express office she found none other than Childress Rodgers, inquiring as to the best way to get Jeff Davis, Madison Square Garden winner, back to Cincinnati. At the lunch counter Bix, still fond of coca-cola, is peacefully drawing through a straw when Sally Feuchtwanger runs up, asks for a sip, and dashes off again. Bix glances at the headlines in the paper before leaving. They read, Jean Tradup Wins Another Case-Big Bill Acquittedf' Now the waitress is having a hard time arguing about the price of hamburgers with two indignant women, but when Patty Michaels steps up to aid her, the argument is won. Patty is a foreign correspondent. On the next stool sat Betsy Rieley-eating as usual. The two epter into conversation when the news pops out that Debbie Sanford is at last cruising the blue Mediterranean on her honeymoon. Who the lucky fellow is no one knows! The waitress turns the dial on the radio above her counter and the soft beautiful voice of Helen Neff flows out. Helen is now a member of the Metropolitan Opera. Now Patti returns and it is late, they hail a red-cap and wander down Track 15 to their train which is already in. On passing the engine, they discover with astonish- ment that the engineer is June Rorke. Boarding the Pullman, they leave their bags in the aisle until they are settled. Immediately someone tumbles over them. Picking herself up, she exclaims, Has anyone seen my glasses? It is Ann Clark, one of New York's younger society matrons. Behind her is Bibs Curtiss, a great friend of Ann's and another young society matron. Across the aisle Patti recognizes the world re- nowned poet, Miss Dorothy de Lutio. just at this time the train is ready to pull out. As it is about to leave, a lady dashes up screaming, Wait! The fate of coincidence certainly worked well that day-it was Chris Rankins who has lately been hard at work in an agency bureau. Now the train has left. The spell has vanished and once more the noise is apparent to our ears. The crowd comes back into being, and again it is the same noisy Grand Central that we have always known. 34 -its .3-iq .Zh .l--v 4 X fi an to YCUTH The roaring pounding howl resounds Across thc nation The ocean sounds For fog that rides For fog that hugs The better to kill For fog that sails 's breastg its quivering grief its crest. the helpless waves, and to scoff, the emerald sea And screams, and quotes Mein Kampff' It screams and quotes and rumbles and roars, Defeating a million Troys, But suddenly its fanatical voice Is drowned by a louder noise.
