FRE HMA CLASS vi 5- 5 Back Row: John Rich, Sam Hoobler, Gene Hoobler, Keith Roth, Harold Yandell, Jay Klopfenstein, Pete Kearney, Orlyn Frey, Ronald Gerig, Marvin Zimmerman, Gerald Wahls, Lowell Litwiller, and Edward Gramm. Eugene Bolby, Jake Ringger, and Howard Yandell were absent. Our class officers are: President, Jay Klopfensteing Vice-President, Pete Kearneyg Secretary and Treasurer, John Rich, and Historian, Maxine Kent, Class Reporter, Evelyn Schramm. The initiation of thirty-five green, frightened freshies was a sight to behold. We looked very queer to the rest of the students for we were dressed in everything from black stockings to overalls inside out. We had to do every- thing from washing the office windows with a toothbrush to kissing Mr. Siron's hand. Our first party was held in the school house on Oct. 29, 1949. Everyone came dressed like hoboes because Halloween was just around the corner. Our second party was held in the annex of the Congo Church on Feb. 23, l9LO. The decorations were red, white, and blue in honor of George Washington's birthday. There was plenty of ice cream and cake for all. Mr. Watkins has organized a girls' baseball team and there are several freshmen on it. They are Frances Ann Wilfong, Evelyn Hoobler, Mary Louise Klein and Evelyn Gerig. The football field has been transformed into a baseball diamond and the girls practice there twice a week. Two of our boys, Jay Klopfenstein and Pete Kearney were honored by receiving football letters. We are all very proud of them. Our class colors are green and white, our class flower Lilly-of-the-Valley and our class motto is WStrive to Rise.W -14-

Yergler, Moser, Diggle, and Westermeyer. Second Row: Fleming, Roth, Finck, Cornwell, Kaufman, Funk, Rinkenberger, Hany, Reeves, and Zehr. Front Row: Stevens, Gramm, Hany, Gilmore, G. Yergler, Ehresman, Phillis, and Bolby. In September of 1939, thirty-nine frightened freshmen enrolled in Gridley High School. In 1940 there are thirty-five sophomores who are not afraid of anything, we hope. Our class officers are: Marcella Moser, President, Jack Kearney, Vice President, Leonard Rich, Secretary-Treasurerg Margaret Ann Taylor, Historian, and Ray Meiss, Sergeant-at-arms. The sophomore class has two basketball players, Leonard Rich and Bill Froelich, who are outstanding. In November our class held a bake sale in Rich's Hardware Store, it proved to be a financial success. Our first class party this year, which the teachers attended, was held in the Annex on February 15, 1930. We had plenty of ice cream, cookies and candy. On February 17, Mrs. John Taylor gave a party in honor of Margaret Ann Taylor's sixteenth birthday. The girls of the sophomore class attending the party presented her with nice gifts. Contact, fifty, and other games were played. This was also Aldene Roth's birthday, but she being ill with the flu, could not attend. Our class colors are red and silver, our class flower is the American beauty rose, and our class motto is NForward ever, backward never.' -13-
