We are all fond of his tenor voice which he often uses in song as he goes about his work. Mr. Smith says that he has greatly enjoyed working here--better than any other place that he has worked. He stated that the people have been tolerant and pleasant and that he has made and enjoyed many friendships because of his work here. Mr. Smith is a man of high ideals. These have been shown in his work during his eighteen years of service in our school. He is a well-liked com- munity member. The student body extend to Mr. Smith their appreciation for his efforts and service. ' -6- Earl E. Dodson Apollo 3 Glee Club l,2,3,l. Soon after we had mastered the difficulty of getting books, classes, rooms and hours into definite and familiar places in our minds, we were given the schools' official welconw, the freshman initiation. This found us digging out our old battered books and exchanging them for others. We found that three of our confederates had dropped behind but five new recruits had joined our company. Though this year was not so ex- citing as others, we had several enjoyable parties. Just as we were about to overcome the spring fever, vacation We returned the next fall half came. sorry for vacation's end, half glad for our promotion to,the rank of juniors. Returning to resume our duties we found that we had lost two classmates but that we had acquired three new members. Our first big job was the junior play 'Galahad Jonesn, under the direction of Miss Shinoske. After many months of worry and toil, we entertained the seniors suc- cessfully with the Junior-Senior Banquet. We started the year Of 1939 not as green freshies of '36, but as dignified seniors. Once again a group of twenty-seven assembled to complete the struggle for the modern necessity, a high school diploma. Realizing that this would be our last year we were anxious to make the most of it. The monotony of lessons was submerged while we were developing the newly established yearbook. There was not one of us who knew where to go or what to do next on that thirty- first day of August in nineteen thirty-seven. Everyone tried to be very help- ful and friendly, so we soon began to realize what it was all about. Mr. McKey was our first class advisor, and our first class president was Arthur Gram . The greatly dreaded and feared initiation came soon. This great event in life of every freshman was held at Lake Bloomington. After we had performed for the amusement of the upper classes, they served us very delightful refresh- ments. The next fall we returned to our work with a new eagerness and confidence. Miss Maurits was our class advisor, Florence Kuerth was president the first semester, Earl Rinkenberger was president the second semester. During this year we had the misfortune of losing three classmates--Yvonne Krug, Joan Hoobler and Martha Benedict, however, Bill Ethington became a new member. Now we are Juniors! We are less in number because Maxine Brown and Loren Schli f did not return to school this year, but we are richer in knowledge Cwe hopeig. Our class advisor is Miss Garrity, and the officers are: President, Carolyn Kuerthg Vice President, Keith Hoobler, Secretary, Donald Scarbearyg Treasurer, Eleanor Funkg Historian, Florence Kuerth. Our Christmas party at the Annex was very successful. It was attended by thirty members of the class and faculty who had a most enjoyable time. Our Junior class play, nThe Harvest Queenu, directed by Miss Garrity was given on March l5th at the Annex. The play was a grand success and we feel we accomplished something. We have been very busy earning money so we can give the Seniors a grand banquet. -12- ,, OPHOMORE CLASS S-fi' ' C13 V- Back Row: Kearney, R. Schlipf, Pfister, Meiss, Clausen, Rich, A. Our class officers are: Marcella Moser, President, Jack Kearney, Vice President, Leonard Rich, Secretary-Treasurerg Margaret Ann Taylor, Historian, and Ray Meiss, Sergeant-at-arms. The sophomore class has two basketball players, Leonard Rich and Bill Froelich, who are outstanding. In November our class held a bake sale in Rich's Hardware Store, it proved to be a financial success. Our first class party this year, which the teachers attended, was held in the Annex on February 15, 1930. We had plenty of ice cream, cookies and candy. On February 17, Mrs. John Taylor gave a party in honor of Margaret Ann Taylor's sixteenth birthday. The girls of the sophomore class attending the party presented her with nice gifts. Contact, fifty, and other games were played. This was also Aldene Roth's birthday, but she being ill with the flu, could not attend. Our class colors are red and silver, our class flower is the American beauty rose, and our class motto is NForward ever, backward never.' -13- FRE HMA CLASS vi 5- 5 Back Row: John Rich, Sam Hoobler, Gene Hoobler, Keith Roth, Harold Yandell, Jay Klopfenstein, Pete Kearney, Orlyn Frey, Ronald Gerig, Marvin Zimmerman, Gerald Wahls, Lowell Litwiller, and Edward Gramm. The initiation of thirty-five green, frightened freshies was a sight to behold. We looked very queer to the rest of the students for we were dressed in everything from black stockings to overalls inside out. We had to do every- thing from washing the office windows with a toothbrush to kissing Mr. Siron's hand. Our first party was held in the school house on Oct. 29, 1949. Everyone came dressed like hoboes because Halloween was just around the corner. Our second party was held in the annex of the Congo Church on Feb. 23, l9LO. The decorations were red, white, and blue in honor of George Washington's birthday. There was plenty of ice cream and cake for all. Mr. Watkins has organized a girls' baseball team and there are several freshmen on it. They are Frances Ann Wilfong, Evelyn Hoobler, Mary Louise Klein and Evelyn Gerig. The football field has been transformed into a baseball diamond and the girls practice there twice a week. Two of our boys, Jay Klopfenstein and Pete Kearney were honored by receiving football letters. We are all very proud of them. The l939 football schedule opened in an impressive style with a 58 to O victoryxover Cullom. The Cullom team was at a great disadvantage in size and lack of experience. Our next foe was the Lexington Minute Men, who resumed playing football as a major sport, adopting the abbreviated eight man team. We came home the vic- tors by a score of 33 to O. However the score doesn't tell the closeness of the game. Much credit is due to Coach Murray and his players in their first year of football. We ran our victory string to three as we defeated El Paso by the score of lb to 0 under the flood lights, at El Paso. El Paso was much stronger than expected and pushed us to the utmost. We were, however, exceedingly jubilant over the victory. This brought the first victory over El Paso in football for some twenty years. After such a fine start our team showed a reversal of form and lost the next four games on our schedule. We were defeated by Chillicothe 13 to O, by Saunemin 7 to O, by Washington 25 to O, and by the powerful Chenoa team 33 to O. Both Washington and Chenoa were considered two of the better teams of the state this year. Letterman are: C. Rowley, R. Travis, J. Klopfenstein, R. Meiss, E. Meiss, G. Henrichs, H. Roth, P. They then have to make twenty points a month. The club seeks to promote ath- letics and encourage companionship among the girls. The club was originated in 1936-37 under the very capable leadership of Miss Jessie Frisby. A rural field day is annually sponsored by the G.A.A. Each summer the girls rent a cabin and spend a week at Lake Bloomington. All girls earning five hundred points receive a letter. Seventeen girls received letters this year. Seven hundred fifty points entitles a girl to a medal, one thousand points entitles her to an emblem. Each Senior boy who has received three athletic letters is awarded a medal by the G.A.A. The band was organized during the school year of 1937-38 under the direc- tion of Mr. John O'Toole. The first public appearance was made before the Parent Teacher's Association in March, 1938. Concerts were given weekly during the next two summers under the sponsorship of the Lions' Club and the business men. After the death of Mr. O'Toole, the band was taken over by Clarence Mas- sey who was succeeded by Mr. Earl Meeker in November,l939. Mr. Meeker and his work have been well-known in this community for a num- ber of years and we feel that we are very fortunate in having him as our direc- tor. Under his leadership the band has made definite progress. Public interest has been aroused, new uniforms have been promised by the American Legion and more instruments by the school board. We expect in another year to compare favorably with the bands of neighboring schools. Thirteen of our members are grade school people. Since there is no grade school band, we are grateful for this nucleus for our future high school bands. The present officers are: President, Leonard Rich, Vice-President, Vio- letta Wilfongg and Secretary-Treasurer, Evelyn Cornwell. Those absent when this picture was made are: L. Phillis, Louis Phillis, Helbling, M. K. Pfister, E. Rinkenberger, and J. Diggle. -3Q.. HUMOR WHAT? NO ENGLISH I think that I could never saw An old Maid with a whopper jaw: A jaw whose teeth is all fall out, Who intimately lives with gout. Josephine Tanton: Because it is nearer the sun. SOMETHING'S WRONG Miss Garrity: Earl, use dissolution in a sentence. Earl Dodson: Dissolution is too strong. Each pin prick seems a bit more keen, Until the blood is seen, Until the blood is seen. Each scratch a cut, Each cut a wound, And then when we have almost swooned, Ah! cease the mutilating sword, And quickly is our poise restored. Oh, vaccination, how you burn: Each tender touch doth cause alarm. Each lover's joy I now must spurn And strive to sooth my aching arm.
