HESS AS COMMANDING OFFICER OF USS GRIDLEY, THE WORLD'S GREATEST CRUISER. THE CEREMONY WAS HELD ON THE FLIGHT DECK OF USS GRIDLEY AND WAS OFFICIATED BY RADM FOGHARTY, COMMANDER, JOINT TASK FORCE MIDEAST. CAPTAIN HESS SERVED AS COMMANDING OFFICER OF THE USS GRIDLEY FOR 28 MONTHS, A PERIOD WHICH INCLUD- ED TWO DEPLOYMENTS TO THE WESTERN PACIFIC OCEAN, THE NORTH ARABIAN SEA, AND THE PERSIAN GULF. FOLLOWING THE CEREMONY CAPTAIN HESS WAS PRESENTED WITH THE SHIP'S COMMIS- SIONING PENNANT BY MMCMCSWQ BRODIE, THE MASTER CHIEF OF THE COMMAND. A RECEPTION WAS HELD ON THE MESS DECKS FOLLOWING THE CEREMONY.
