He attended lowa State University, graduating in 4965 with a Bachelor of Science Degree. Commissioned in 4965 through the Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps program, his first assignment was in USS COCHRANE CDDG 243 homeported in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. There he served as Assistant First Lieu- tenant, Navigator and Combat information Center Officer. ln July 4968, Captain Hess attended Destroyer School in Newport, Rhode island where he graduated Uwith distinction . Upon graduation, he reported to USS CONYNGHAM QDDG 473, homeported in Norfolk. Virginia. He served there as Weapons Officer until Sep- tember 4974. The Bureau of Naval Personnel in Washington, D.C., was Captain Hess' next assignment. He was initially toured as a Surface Junior Officer Assignment detailer, and later as Aide Placement Officer and Administra- tive Assistant to the Director of the Restricted Line, Staff Corps and Major Staffs Placement Division. In 4975, upon successful completion of the course of instruction at the Armed Forces Staff College in Nor- folk, Virginia, Captain Hess was assigned as Executive Officer of the USS BERKELEY CDDG 453, homeported in San Diego, California. From May 4977 to December 4978, Captain Hess served in the Navy Office of Legislative Affairs in Wash- ington, D.C., as a congressional Liaison Officer with the U.S. House of Representatives. His next assignment was as Special Assistant for Naval Personnel to the Assis- tant Secretary of the Navy CManpower, Reserve Af- fairs and Logistics3 from 4978 to 4979. Captain Hess' next tour of duty was as Command- ing Officer of the USS O'BRlEN CDD 9753 homeported in San Diego, California, from 4980 to 4982. The staff of Commander, Attack Carrier Strike Force, Seventh Fleet, homeported in Cubi Point, Republic of the Philip- pines, was Captain Hess' next assignment, where he imaged as Surface Operations Officer from 4982 to A. IC DIVISION IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE OPERATION AND MAINTENANCE OF GRIDLEY'S INTER- NAL COMMUNICATIONS, TELEPHONE SYSTEM, ALARM SYSTEMS, POWER SUPPLIES, AND HELO GLIDE SLOPE INDICATORS. DURING THE DEPLOYMENT THE DEPARTMENT SAW NEW FACES IN THE CHAIN OF COMMAND. LT CHUCK BANE RELIEVED LCDR CLIFF PERKINS AS COMBAT SYSTEMS OFFICER IN MARCH. ALONG WITH A NEW DEPARTMENT HEAD, THE DEPARTMENT ALSO RECEIVED A NEW MISSILES OFFICER, LT THOMAS DOP AND A NEW FIRE CONTROL OFFICER, LT MARK BRIGHT IN FEBRUARY. LTJG VIRGIL WRIGHT BECAME THE UIC OFFICER AND LTJG JOHN DENNETT ASSUMED THE BILLET OF BATTERY CONTROL OFFICER NEAR THE END OF THE DEPLOYMENT. DESPITE NUMEROUS PERSONNEL CHANGES THE DEPARTMENT PERFORMED BRILLIANTLY5 EVERY OPERATIONAL COMMITMENT WAS MET, SEVERAL ON VERY SHORT NOTICE, AND THE ENTIRE COMBAT SYSTEMS SUITE WAS READY FOR IMMEDIATE USE IF THE NEED AROSE. The name GRIDLEY is noted both for Captain GRlDLEY's honor, bravery and devotion to duty and for the distinguished records of two previous ships which bore the name. The present GRIDLEY CCG 211, was commissioned 25 May 1963 at the Puget Sound Shipyard, Bremerton, Washington, and assigned to the U.S. Pacific Fleet. In March 1964, GRIDLEY deployed to the Western Pacific as a unit cnf the U.S. Seventh Fleet and was awarded the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal and the Navy Unit Commendation for services in support of successful air strikes and counter attack operations against North Vietnamese torpedo boats and supporting facilities. As a unit of the U.S. Pacific Fleet, GRIDLEY again deployed to the Western Pacific in 1965, 1966 and 1968 where she served in the South China Sea and the Tonkin Gulf. On 22 July 1969, GRIDLEY was decommissioned prior to undergoing an extensive anti-air warfare unodernization conversion. During her shipyard period, GRIDLEY was fitted with the Naval Tactical Data System fNTDSl which provides rapid communications and information displays, enabling ship and force commanders to make decisions in countering hostile threats in today's high speed warfare. After commissioning on 17 January 1970, GRIDLEY returned to her homeport of Long Beach, California. 'From November 1970 to May 1971, and again during 1972, GRIDLEY served in Japanese and Vietnamese waters. ln February of 1973, GRIDLEY entered Hunter's Point Naval Shipyard, San Francisco, California for overhaul. During this period she received an Anti- Missile Defense System and was outfitted with highly sophisticated electronic equipment to help her meet continuing operational commitments. GRIDLEY sailed to her new homeport, San Diego, California, in December of 1973. ln 1975, GRIDLEY again deployed to the Western Pacific. During the seven and one half month deployment, GRIDLEY provided air traffic control and on station support during HOperation Frequent Windu, the evacuation of people from South Vietnmn. GRIDLEY also was on station as air traffic controller during the MAYAGUEZ incident off the coast of Cambodia. After a short 10 nmnths back in her homeport, GRIDLEY returned to the Western Pacific in July of 1976- In March of l978, GRIDLEY entered Long Beach Naval Shipyard for update and repairs to her Missile Fire Control System and installation of the Harpoon Cruise Missile. Her electronic and communications suites were also updated and repaired. Upon completion of the yard period, GRIDLEY returned to San Diego and underwent refresher training in preparation for the next WESTPAC deployment. In l979, GRIDLEY was deployed to the Far East and as a result of the Iranian crisis participated in Indian Ocean contingency operations until mid 1980. GRIDLEY returned to San Diego in July l98O and participated in various Southern California training operations until almost l98l when she returned again U3 WESTPAC. During the next seven months GRIDLEY performed AAW Picket and AAW Commander duties while assigned to the Coral Sea Battle Group. Upon returning to San Diego in March 1982, GRIDLEY was once again operating in Southern California waters, until October when she returned to Long Beach Naval Shipyard for an extensive update of all Fire Control and Search Radars, installation of new anti-missile Close In Weapons Systems, Electronic Warfare and Communication Suites, and overhaul of all Engineering Machinery. GRIDLEY returned to the operational fleet in October 1983. GRUHEY spent a year, October 1983 to October l984, undergoing intensive training and workup for her next deployment. GRIDLEY deployed to the Western Pacific from October 1984 to May l985. From May of l985 until June of 1987, GRIDLEY participated in a series of workups that culminated in a rnajor month long exercise with Pacific Navies, including highly successful missile shoots that xnarked the beginning of a North Arabian Sea Deployment. GRIDLEY performed Anti-Air ldarfare picket and Anti-Air Warfare Commander duties with the USS RANGER Battle Group during Persian Gulf operations involving the retaliatory destruction of Iranian oil platforms. GRIDLEY returned to home port in December of 1987 and Spent the majority of l988 undergoing several major inspections that resulted in a full readiness certification of her engineering plant, combat systems, operations capabilities, and supply support. The ship left San Diego in December of l988 for her thirteenth deployment in 22 years. GRIDLEY independently deployed to the Persian Gulf assigned to the Joint Middle East Task Force as the Anti-Air Warfare Commander. The ship played a major role iD protecting merchant shipping as she conducted 25 escoff missions involving U.S. Flagged Tankers, weighing a total of 2,451,320 deadweight tons, through the volatile st ' rait of Hormuz. She returned to home port in June of 1989 and commenced preparation for' a major weapons system u rad P8 9 that will require one year in shipboard overhaul. CRI . . .
