Our Namesake CAPTAIN C. V. GRIDLEY Charles Vernon Gridley was born 24 November, 1844, in Logansport. Indiana: a direct descendant of Thomas Gridley, an early member of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. In I860 he was appointed to the Naval Academy from the state of Michigan. Shortly after graduation he reported aboard the sloop of war, ONEIDA of the West Blockading Squadron off Mobile, Alabama. Gridley distinguished himself beyond all praise during the battle of Mobile Bay when he had charge of the master ' s division and assisted in conning the ship from the top gallant foremast. He was promoted to lieutenant in 1867, and to commander in 1882. He spent three decades following the Civil War on the South Pacific Station, the Great Lakes. Gridley took his station in the conning tower and gave the order to the battery. Having decided and taken the responsibility tor beginning the action for the Battle of Manila Bay. Gridley personally conducted the gunfire from the conning tower of the protected cruiser throughout the battle which ended in the destruction of the Spanish Philippine fleet.
