DEDICATION A book is usually dedicated to an individual who has attained a degree of notoriety: in memory of someone, or to one who has made some significant contribution to society, or the publication of the book itself. This book is not dedicated to the memory of anyone, nor to any prominent personage. lt is dedicated, however, for a significant contribution. lt is dedicated to all the wives, children, families, and loved ones of the crew of GRIDLEY who have, to one degree or another, contributed to the success of WESTPAC '76. All the responsibilities of maintaining family relationships, and being supportive of each other and of the crew member you had on board helped the GRIDLEY, in part, do its job. with 'W' '75 ga ' q , 'S '75 . TY 1:11 fra-rr ,, . 7 f- - Statistics On a day to day basis, it is dUficult to realize just what it takes to operate a Guided Missile Cruiser. It is interesting to note how much effort has gone into the support of our mission and of the 380 men attached for a period of six months. Below is a small indication of what has occurred during the cruise. Administrative Division processed 75 personnel reporting for duty while 60 personnel were transferred. They reenlisted 5 personnel and promoted 45 personnel in rank or rate. The ship's office crew used 270,000 pieces of paper in the Xerox and Ditto machines to reproduce the ship's bills, instructions, notices, Plan of the Day, etc. The postal clerks received more than 13,442 pounds of mail and sent off approximately 6,494 pounds of mail. Over S165,000 worth of postal money orders were purchased and more than 84,500 was spent for postage stamps. ln our Supply Department the ship's bakers pulled out of the ovens 8,000 loaves of bread and cooked over 13 tons of beef, 8,870 gallons of milk was consumed as were 6,268 dozen eggs, 1,751 gallons of ice cream, 3,391 pounds of butter, 2,242 pounds of frankfurters and 5,018 pounds of hamburger. Total value of provisions consumed during the cruise was over S137,687.00. Our barbers provided 1,640 haircuts while our Disbursing Officer paid out S641,591.12 in wages. Our Ship's Servicemen washed over 29 tons of clothing using 1,650 pounds of detergent, 1,100 pounds of bleach and 100 pounds of starch. The ship's store sold over 67.811 sodas and over 3102208.25 in merchandise. The Engineers refined from sea water over 1,278,473 gallons of fresh water and expended over 3.916.367 gallons of fuel to steam over 36,556 nautical miles during the cruise giving us 121 days at sea and 62 days in port. The ship's boilers used over 1,675,800 gallons of feed water while steaming 3,582.2 hours during the cruise with the main engines turning 21,034,842 revolutions from San Diego thru WESTPAC and return to San Diego. Our Hospital Corpsmen saw over 1,000 patients and provided over 1,700 inoculations for everythin from Swine Flu to yellow fever. Communications Department personnel processed over 14,300 f'1C0mff19 m9SS09es and over 2,500 outgoing messages. Our Weapons Department personnel expended over 4,228 rounds of small arms ammunition for indoctrination in the use of hand held weapons and fired 463 rounds of 3 50 caliber munitions during general quarters exercises. Ship's force used 300 gallons of primer, and 1,128 gallons of paint, 275 gallons ofpaint thinner to keep the ship in the highest material condition possible while our Operations Department personnel detected and tracked on radar over 8,400 surface contacts. The U.S. Customs Department collected customs declarations indicating the crew had spent over S174,326.00 for personal items ranging from stereo equipment and athletic gear to motorcycles and chop sticks.
